Guestbook comments from the owner

We visited Stef Surf with our 3 children ages 15,10 and 2. The house had absolutely everything we needed to fully enjoy our stay at the beach. Our kids loved the refreshing pool, and walking to the beach. The property is beautiful and lovingly cared for. We rented bikes to cruise town, and visit nearby beaches. Greg and Gladys are wonderful hosts. We truly felt like a part of the local community thanks to their enthusiasm and warmth and all the insider tips. Highlights included the swim up bar at Bahia del Sol, playa Penca, Las Brisas, karaoke at Max's, a trip to Rincon de la Vieja with Jaime and the pizza party at Stef Surf. Truly a wonderful place!

Excellent vacation!

  • 5 of 5

What an incredible trip to Costa Rica! It was a wonderful experience from start to finish. With Greg's quick response to all our questions and providing thorough details on Costa Rica and things to do there. To Francisco and Marling's easygoing and extremely welcoming personalities to help make our stay enjoyable - "no problem".

This was our first visit to CR and it won't be our last. We loved the people, the culture, the lush forests and lovely beaches. Potrero is laid back and relaxing and Stef Surf is a great place to rejuvenate one's spirit. The property lived up to every expectation. Thank you Greg! We look forward to returning someday soon!

Excellent amenities! Great location!

  • 5 of 5

My fiancee and I stayed at Steph Surf for 4 nights. Had an incredible time here. The property is perfectly comforting and relaxing; abundance of lush, tropical vegetation makes for a very enchanting feel. The caretakers had everything ready upon our arrival and were willing to do anything we need throughout our stay. Even had a concierge come by to give us recommendations and directions. She even booked tours for us. So easy. At the end of the street (100 yards) is a little restaurant Hibiscus. Our favorite dining experience in all of Costa Rica! We ate there twice in four days. A 'must-do' while staying here.

Wonderful Vacation!

  • 5 of 5

My family went to Costa Rica in Feb and stayed at Stef Surf and had an absolutely wonderful time. I have a 3 year old son and it was so nice to have the pool right outside our door. We felt very safe staying at Stef Surf and totally comfortable walking around the town and to the beach. Francisco, Marling and Lis were all wonderful. We really liked the location of Stef Surf and Playa Potrero. It was close to several other beaches and we ventured to a different beach everyday. Our favorite was Playa Danta. We rented a car and I highly recommend this. Overall we have a fabulous vacation and I highly recommend Steff Surf. We would go back in a heartbeat!

Awesome location and property

  • 5 of 5

The property is beautiful. We grew to really love the privacy offered by the setup and communal area. The pool and all the sitting areas provided great sanctuary and some great shady evenings and mornings. Edwin was an attentive caretaker, always cleaning the property. He also helped us have fresh fish delivered by a local fisherman. We spent a lot of time cooking and preparing food ourselves, despite the hundreds of local restaurants you could choose. Local farm stands abound and we shopped for fruits and veggies while helping support the locals with our business. Playa Portrero is the closest beach and we found our way to it about a block away upon arrival. Totally peaceful and like many of the beaches, very unpopulated. We had lunch at the beach club a few hundred yards away one afternoon and one evening walked all the way to the beach shack at the end. We familiarized ourselves with the local area immediately and it was pretty easy to learn our way around. We beach hopped a lot and visited Sugar Beach, Playa Flamingo, Negra, Tamarindo and the aforementioned Portrero. Sugar was fantastic and very private. Flamingo had the absolutely most amazing sunsets and I highly recommend anyone staying in this area check that out. It was mind-blowing and I promise will stay with you forever. Tamarindo was as advertised; overcrowded, touristy and should be skipped, imo. We also took a ride to Playa Negra, since we wanted to see a beach with surfing level waves. The water was as advertised, and more turquoise than some other beaches. That being said, it was a long ride over some difficult roads to get there. We found a small resort where we could grab a drink but it wasn't to our liking so we didn't stay too long here either. We never got the chance to visit Conchal but have that on our list for next time :) We also did a day trip to Torino National Park. It was a 3 hour drive so we wound up staying overnight, but it was well worth it. We hiked the entire park and it was challenging but fulfilling. We saw the Blue Lagoon and waterfall, which must be seen to be believed. Overall, our experience in Costa Rica and at Stef Surf were amazing. Highly recommend both!

Wonderful Accommodation for a Peaceful Vacation

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at El Toucan, the 4th of 4 units in Stef Surf. It was just as pictured, lush and lovely gardens, private, clean and spacious home. Excellent communication and pre-arrival information. Good A/C, important for the hottest month of the year!! Working wifi. The pool is great - super long for laps if you are so inclined. What makes this place great, however, is the attentive work of the caretakers, Edwin, Francisco, and Marling, who are so friendly and helpful. The pool is cleaned twice a day, for goodness sake! Your patio and walkways swept at least daily!

The icing on the cake was Lis - good heavens, she made our stay perfect. She stopped by our 2nd morning (Monday) and told us about all kinds of things we could do and stayed in contact by text. She booked a sunset sail/ snorkel trip and tours/ lunch at El Viejo Wetlands. Both were great. She also arranged for a rental car to be brought to us. We hadn't initially wanted to rent, but found the driving to be quite easy. Roads aren't marked by number, rather all intersections have arrows pointing to where you want to go - how simple is that? Waze works too, which we used to make our way to the wetlands - beware the gravel roads ...

One thing I didn't anticipate was how dirty/dusty it is here in the dry season. Your feet will get dirty if you wear sandals, otherwise your shoes will get dirty. There are no sidewalks and many roads are unpaved, especially if walking to restaraunts or the beach - which is simple to do from here. Also, it gets dark pretty early, so don't forget a flashlight when heading out to dinner on foot ( there was one by the door, but I had my mini headlamp.) One great thing about this area is that it is a mix of traditional and newer development. It is easy to get a feel for the real Costa Rica here.

Groceries are very expensive nearby, but much more reasonable at the MegaSuper nearer Tamarindo. The groceries sell beer, wine, and spirits -- sweet!

The beaches are lovely, quite undeveloped, and mostly lacking shade. If you like to hang out on the beach, a portable shade would be really nice. Playa Potrero has enough slope to it that walking with a bad knee is a little uncomfortable. Each beach is a little different. We really liked Playa Grande, Playa Dante, and Playa Prieta.

We found some great places to eat, including the Shack, Casa Celeste, and the Surf Box. Beware of the naughty howler monkeys dropping half- eaten mangos on the metal roof at the Shack!
