We visited Stef Surf with our 3 children ages 15,10 and 2. The house had absolutely everything we needed to fully enjoy our stay at the beach. Our kids loved the refreshing pool, and walking to the beach. The property is beautiful and lovingly cared for. We rented bikes to cruise town, and visit nearby beaches. Greg and Gladys are wonderful hosts. We truly felt like a part of the local community thanks to their enthusiasm and warmth and all the insider tips. Highlights included the swim up bar at Bahia del Sol, playa Penca, Las Brisas, karaoke at Max's, a trip to Rincon de la Vieja with Jaime and the pizza party at Stef Surf. Truly a wonderful place!

Relaxing, tropical retreat!

  • 5 of 5

We arrived in Costa Rica and took a shuttle to Stef Surf from Liberia Airport. We were greeted at the property by Francisco and his wife, Marling. They were very helpful, friendly and informative. The unit at Stef Surf that we had was quiet, well equipped, clean end very relaxing. We had the pool area to ourselves - it was rainy season (but not rainy)!

We rented a golf cart for a day to tour the area. We would highly recommend 'Rent a golf cart Costa Rica'. The owners, Chip and Jennifer, are great to work with. We were referred to Lis and she arranged massages and also our car rental for the duration of our vacation in Costa Rica. She provided us with an SUV at a much more reasonable fee than we would have found in our own.

The property at Stef Surf is well maintained, feels like you are in a private bird and butterfly sanctuary - although we didn't see any monkeys or parrots.

We were two couples travelling together and would recommend. Stef Surf when visiting Playa Potrero.

Beautiful property in a great location!

  • 5 of 5

Loved the house and property - perfect for our family of 4. The size and layout of 4 townhouses facing the pool gave it a quiet, private feeling without being isolated. The verandas off each of the bedrooms, the pool (as beautiful as it looks in the photos) and short walk to Playa Potrero (and yes you can hear the waves from the master bedroom!) made it easy for everyone to relax and enjoy the surroundings but the real value added were the wonderful caretakers Francisco and Marling as well as Lis Garcia (the concierge) who gave us great tips on nearby activities and was a huge help with the car rental (note: renting a car can be very expensive in Costa Rica because of the roads - we had originally made a reservation prior to our trip and were shocked when we arrived at the airport at what the actual cost of a week's rental would be. With Lis' help, we instead rented a car locally on our 3d day there at a much lower cost (which was perfect as we spent the first days exploring the many nearby beaches on foot)) . Communication with Greg and Gladys was excellent from the start and they provided us with a wealth of information that really helped us make the most of our time there.

Slice of Heaven

  • 5 of 5

Stef Surf and the surrounding area will provide you with the most wonderful vacation. The location is close to so many wonderful beaches and activities, we consider it paradise. This is our family's 2nd trip to Costa Rica and specifically Stef Surf. The house and it's amenities are first rate. The property, pool and houses are clean and very welcoming. If you are looking for a low key but wonderful vacation Stef Surf and Costa Rica are it. We would spend the day at one of the many beaches and then always stop at the local fruit stand on the way home. The restaurants around the area are great too. We love Stef Surf and Costa Rica

Excellent accommodations in Playa Protrero!

  • 5 of 5

We spent four of our nine nights in Costa Rica at Stef Surf. They were among the most enjoyable. We stayed in the La Gaviota unit. The layout of the four units was great for our extended family. Having a pool was nice to have a break from all of the wonderful beaches in the vicinity. The kitchen had everything you would need, including spices (which our rental in Arenal did not have). This place was very well landscaped and felt as if you were in your own oasis. The balconies are very nice to sit on and enjoy an evening. Compared to our stay in Arenal, Playa Protrero has many restaurants to choose from and more beaches than you can count in a 5 to 20 minute drive. You spend more time enjoying your vacation rather than time in the car. Be sure to check out Hibiscus, El Castillo and the Surf Box restaurants. If you are planning to go to this area, it is much more peaceful than the other adjacent towns, such as Las Brisas or Tamarindo The other benefit is you really get a chance to know the local people and culture, which was actually one of the best memories on our trip. Be sure to listen to Liz, the concierge. She arranged a chef to come cook for us one night with a true Costa Rican spread. We also did a half day catamaran sail that she told us about. I want to mention how helpful Francisco was. From the moment we arrived he took care of us helping us with our bags, taking care of the grounds, etc. and continued to the day of departure. An example of this is on the day we left. I wanted to get the sand our of our rental car and asked for a wisk broom. He ended up vacuuming our car completely. Knowing some Spanish helps with communication, but he does know some English. I'd highly recommend this place. It was a great value for the money.

Tropical Paradise that You Won't Want to Leave

  • 4 of 5

My family along with 2 other families, rented 3 condos at Stef Surf for 4 days in July (11 people total). Overall, we enjoyed our stay, but did feel the property could use some updating and small changes to make it more comfortable. The washer broke while we were there and couldn't be fixed until after we left, which was disappointing because we had lots of wet beach clothing, dirty towels etc... It was leaking water on the ground when we arrived. The master shower head (in the Delfin unit) is old and needs replaced. It sprayed water everywhere, even outside the shower, and was clogged so it didn't have enough power to rinse out the shampoo in my hair. I ended up using the kids shower instead. Also, the units all have narrow spiral staircases that were uncomfortable to climb every time you wanted to go upstairs to the restroom or get something from your suitcase. The stairs wouldn't be good for anyone with knee issues and the property isn't designed to house anyone in a wheelchair. Another issue that we didn't care for was the master bathroom in all the units don't have a door for privacy. At night I woke up my husband whenever I went to the bathroom. Also, the glass windows and sliding doors are all enclosed in metal frames that are very noisy. If the wind is strong or the ceiling fans are running, it makes the metal frames bang together. It was difficult for my husband and I to sleep until we turned off all ceiling fans at night. The (Delfin) furniture was awkward and uncomfortable because it slipped around on the concrete floor. Lastly, the WiFi didn't work upstairs in the kids bedroom, which made the kids somewhat unhappy, and the reception went out intermittently, and made it difficult to conduct business on your laptop. As others have stated, the lush, tropical grounds are beautiful and relaxing. Francisco does a wonderful job maintaining the property. He also lives on the property to provide security, which allowed us to feel very safe. He mainly speaks Spanish, so communication can be a little broken down at times, but he's very friendly and helpful. Definitely contact Lis, who offers free concierge service to any excursions. She booked a catamaran curise/snorkel for us, and a private home cooked dinner for all 3 families by a woman named Alina. Lis really made our trip feel special. She even let us borrow her personal thermometer when my husband came down with a fever. Truly hospitable people in Costa Rica that make you feel like family.
