About the property

3200 Sq Ft, 3 Bedroom, 2 1/2 Bath Home With Pool, Walk To Tanglewood

This spectacularly designed, meticulously renovated and fully equipped 3200 sq. ft. structure consists of a huge 2 story open plan kitchen, dining and entertaining area with 4 seating groups; there is a dramatic spiral staircase at the center. On the first floor, there are two bedrooms, one with a queen bed and one with two twins. They share a full bath. There is also a half bath on the first floor. Upstairs is a larger bedroom with a queen bed; this bedroom uses a fabulous bathroom with an 8 person sauna. This bathroom can be accessed from the upstairs entertaining space, which has a fold out queen sofa. There is a washer/dryer upstairs, and all towels, linens and household equipment are on hand.

The kitchen features a SubZero refrigerator, a Miele dishwasher and a built in microwave in a large cooking island; there are many beautiful glass and wood cabinets and plenty of prep space. A dining table for six is in the 2 story 'silo' at the side of the house. It overlooks a beautiful semi-circular rock garden where there is an outdoor dining table and chairs and lounges, two decks and a gas grill. There are two TVs, DirecTV, a DVD player, WiFi and a land line.

Outdoors, our guests share with our family the use of a 20' by 40' gunnite pool with an integral 8' by 8' hot tub. The pool has a table and chairs, lounges, and shade as well as sun. It's surrounded by a lovely garden, planted to bloom in July and August.

The barn shares 10 acres with the 12,000 sq. ft. main house. Behind the houses is Bald Head Mountain. An intermittent waterfall (spring and after heavy rain) flows down the mountain into a stream alongside the barn. The property is 1/3 of a mile to the main entrance to Tanglewood, and two miles from downtown Lenox. Under Mountain Road joins up with two other roads to form a 5 mile loop overlooking the horse farm and valley. It is a favorite with walkers, bicyclers, etc.

About Ingrid Taylor

My husband Richard and I are New Yorkers, but we moved here after living in London for seven years. We have three grown children and two grandchildren. We have been happily renting the barn for fourteen years using word of mouth and a different web site. Our guests are terrific!

Ingrid Taylor purchased this house in 2000

Why Ingrid Taylor chose Berkshires

We wanted to be centrally located for the cultural attractions of the Berkshires. We wanted to be in a beautiful, sophisticated area that was within striking range of New York City and Boston. We knew what we wanted because we had been tourists here ourselves.

What makes this house unique

The main house, where we live, is an 1839 farmhouse that has been added on to for 150 years. In the nineties, the former owners put a huge addition on, but the architecture was done in keeping with the original house. They also installed a wonderful three tier perennial garden, using local Goshen stone. Guests in the guest house are welcome to visit it. The guest house itself has a wonderful rock garden with seating.

The original barn, as you can see from the photo, was turned into a striking modern home. The two houses are on a lovely quiet road, yet super convenient to Lenox, home to Tanglewood, Shakespeare & Co., Ventfort Hall, a beautifully restored 200 year old library, many shops, restaurants, a locally owned bookstore and 14 art galleries.

Post Christmas Bliss at the Barn at Foothill Farm

  • 5 of 5
Verified Stay

We just enjoyed a wonderful first visit to the Barn at Foothill Farm last week. As amazing as the listing pictures are, they simply don't do the property justice. This home is beyond gorgeous and oh so comfortable. It made for the perfect rendezvous for a post Christmas family gathering, with family members coming from coastal NJ, Manhattan, and Boston. The sprawling, open living area with plenty of comfy sofas and beautiful, well equipped chef's kitchen made it a breeze to host a holiday dinner for the 6 of us, plus 3 local family members who joined us. Along with beautiful artwork, comfortable beds, abundance of good towels, the Barn at Foothill Farm is a wonderful home away from home that feels like yours, rather than a rental.

We arrived in the dark and could hear the waterfall as we unpacked our cars. It was hard to wait until morning to get the visual. But the house itself, with a myriad of spectacular lighting throughout, was a delight to walk into. And, we were not disappointed when daylight revealed the amazing grounds and waterfall. There's just something so beautiful about a quiet winter garden/landscape of rich, textured browns. Nonetheless, my landscape architect husband has requested a spring/summer visit to see the grounds in full leaf. Most of us did some hiking up the hill and walking about in the breathtakingly scenic location. And the sauna was lovely to warm our chilled bones after coming in from the cold.

We've been looking for a new post-Christmas gathering as we all become scattered geographically. Everyone agreed our rendezvous at the Barn at Foothill Farm was PERFECT.

Thank you, Ingrid and Richard, for this lovely property.

Sincerely,

The HoweGang

picturesque urban escape

  • 5 of 5

My family spent 2 fabulous weeks here. We were so delighted with how beautiful the house is and how clean it is as well! The landscaping reminds me of something out of a story book with all the beautiful flowers and rolling hills. The pool was wonderful on those super hot summer days and was especially enjoyed by our 3 year old.

The owners were very welcoming and gracious. If we had any questions it was easy to reach them, and they always responded quickly. We loved our experience so much that we will be sure to return next summer!

Beautiful

  • 5 of 5

I was a six consecutive year renter of the Barn at Foothill Farm in Lenox, Massachusetts in June 2008 to 2014; you can well imagine that I was extremely satisfied renting this home. Perfectly situated a short walk to Tanglewood, on a scenic road that leads to the charming town of Lenox, my stay in June year after year was first rate. The property and house is lovely - a large barn that sleeps six or more, positively roomy with light filled windows, an open floor plan, updated kitchen, comfortable furnishings, very clean and with lovely views of gardens... AND a beautiful pool and manicured gardens that the owners gave me total access to.

The owners went out of their way to make my stay comfortable and easy. They were helpful on so many levels - from recommending restaurants and cultural and hiking destinations to just ensuring that my stay was enjoyable. Any time I had a question or concern, the owners were gracious and responsive.

The Barn at Foothill Farm is a beautiful home in close proximity to Tanglewood, Kripalu, Shakespeare & Company, the Mount, and countless other theaters, historic homes, gardens, and Berkshire attractions. You can hike on the road to nearby trails and walk into town with the quaint shops and first rate restaurants. It is a special place perfect for families or couples to relax, unwind, explore and take in the beauty of the Berkshires. I highly recommend this property!

A great girls get away spot

  • 5 of 5

We were a group of 8 that stayed at this property for 5 days and had a wonderful time. The barn is a lot of fun - great open floor plan so easy to gather, well appointed kitchen, and wonderful views. The grounds are beautiful and fun to explore. A highlight for us was the pool with the built-in hot tub. We all agreed it's the nicest pool we have ever seen. The location makes it easy to see all of the area highlights - we walked to Tanglewood, went to the Audubon sanctuary that is close by (nice for hiking), played golf at Cranwell, and ate out in Lenox Center. We would definitely recommend this spot.

Bright Comfortable House in a Spectacular Setting

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time on our recent stay! We loved the open lawns, gardens, outdoor table with umbrella, pool and hot tub. The house was spacious, light comfortable and immaculately maintained. The beds and bedding were very comfortable. The closets and kitchen cabinets were thoughtfully well supplied with pool towels and all we needed for meal preparations. My family and I found the owners to be helpfully available but never intrusive, they even let our kids play with their adorable dog.

Autumn Splendor in the Berkshires

  • 4 of 5

Richard and Ingrid Taylor have been living in Berkshire County for many years and have both been supporters of the nearby Berkshire Botanical Garden. In October 2014, my partner and I spent a long weekend in Lenox and attended the wonderful 80th annual Berkshire Botanical Garden Harvest Festival. It was terrific. To support the programing at the gardens, the Taylor's donated a weekend gift certificate which we purchased in a silent auction. Because we enjoyed our weekend in the Berkshires so much, be promptly booked the very same weekend in 2015.

We were not disappointed. Not only is the house very well appointed, but it is also on a perfect quiet road within walking distance to the grounds of the Tanglewood festival. While we didn't stay during the peak summer, I would imagine that packing a picnic and walking down the road to hear the music would be close to perfect.

We used the hot tub (too cold in October for the pool) and grilled out in the lovely garden. The fall foliage was near peak. The house is very modern, but cozy too. Overstuffed sofas and chairs make the slightly urbane design style more well suited for country life.

The kitchen is quite nice and the center of all activity in the house. We enjoyed cooking and drinking together with our extended family. We also spent several comfortable hours exploring the beautiful terraced garden. I imagine it's beautiful in every season. As the description says, there are three full bedrooms and two fold out sofas. I wouldn't recommend too many nights on the pull out simply because the windows ensure you'll be up very early. One of the three bedrooms has two twin sized beds.

We loved our stay and hope to come back next year!

Map

Car: necessary

The Berkshires offer endless cultural and recreational activities, and Lenox is centrally located for them. In the cultural arena, Tanglewood, Shakespeare & Co., and Ventfort Hall are right here in town. In Pittsfield, 20 minutes to the north, the Colonial Theatre and Barrington Stage (incorporating the Berkshire Theatre Festival) offer live stage performances of all kinds year round. The Berkshire Museum has ongoing programming, the Feigenbaum Hall of Innovation, great children's activities, and art movies year round. Hancock Shaker Village is an preserved original Shaker community and farm -- the City of Peace. Further north in Williamstown, the home of Williamstown, there is the world class Clark Museum, the Williamstown Theatre Company and the Williams College Museum.

Ten minutes south of Lenox is Stockbridge, home of the B erkshire Botanical Garden, Naumkeag, Chesterwood and the Norman Rockwell Museum. Twenty minutes south of Lenox is Great Barrington, recently named the best small town in America. As in all the towns and villages here, there is great shopping, dining, antique shops and galleries. The Mahaiwe Theater, a totally renovated turn of the century theater, like the Colonial in Pittsfield, has year round live programming, as well as the Metropolitan Opera Live in HD performances. In late May, the Triplex movie theater hosts the Berkshire International Film Festival.

Year round active sports are big in the Berkshires. There are four ski areas: Jiminey Peak, Butternut, Bousquet and Catamount in nearby NY State. Some of these areas have summer activities as well; check their websites for the most current info. Hiking, biking, cross country skiing and snow shoeing are available everywhere. Lenox has its own beach at Laurel Lake, visited by families with loads of kids. There are town tennis courts and many local day camps with farm and garden, art and nature activities. There is a horseback riding facility and farm down the road. You can kayak or fish at nearby at the Stockbridge Bowl, or ice fish there in the winter.

For shoppers, the big draw is the boutique shopping in each town, but there is a large outlet mall in Lee. Antique shopping is a particular pleasure, and as mentioned there are numerous galleries for all tastes.

Lastly, there are three more attractions in Lenox: the Cranwell resort, with golf, tennis and spa, the famous Canyon Ranch Spa and Kripalu Yoga Center, the largest yoga destination in the United States.
