Overview

About the property

Luxury inside, Rugged Adirondacks Outside. Great for Couples and Families

1800's renovated Farmhouse with Stunning Views overlooking Lake Algonquin and the Adirondack Mountains.

This is a great area to find some peace and quiet, and the perfect home for those who are particular. Great for adventurers and couch potatoes alike! Year round rugged Adirondack enjoyment can be found outside, while luxury, beautiful lake and mountain views with modern comforts can be found inside.

SPRING, SUMMER and FALL

During the warmer seasons our favorite activities include the 3 mile walk around the lake, hikes to nearby waterfalls, swimming, paddle boarding and kayaking out front. The large front lawn is a great spot to relax in the adirondack chairs while drinking in the view, barbecuing up dinner or lounging around the campfire. Public fishing dock out front. Swimming is easy access, but It is a bit rocky, bring water shoes, or public sand beach is one mile away. 2 kayaks, one stand up paddle board and lake floats provided.

Open floor plan has an amazing "chefs" kitchen, sitting area with fireplace, dining and a second living area with 40" flat screen for watching Netflix movies. We have no cable here, we come here to get away from the news.

Upstairs has a Master bedroom with cathedral ceilings, queen bed, private bath and great lake views. Two guest bedrooms have one double bed each and use of 1/2 bath upstairs, another full bath downstairs.

The house is kept in as close to perfect condition as we can manage. We remove shoes prior to going inside - and prefer our guests do as well. However, we know this is asking a lot, so please be mindful of bringing dirt, snow and mud onto our antique wood floors.

Kitchen - our favorite room! Beautiful lake views, fireplace and dining table, so the cook can converse with everyone. Double farmhouse sink, 5 burner gas stove, dishwasher, expansive wood counter space. Very nice pots, pans, dishes, glassware, spices and other amenities provided.

We do go out of our way to supply amenities that will make our guests stay a little easier and nicer, such as binoculars, table cloths, iron and board, kayaks, paddle board, snowshoes, bikes, paper towels, tin foil, plastic wrap, napkins, sugar, spices, condiments - lots of little things you would find at home but may not think of bringing while traveling. We also share detailed directions on how to get to some amazing local spots, waterfalls and places that you might not find otherwise - some took us years to find!

Linens supplied, but we do ask you to bring your own bath and beach towels. If travelling by plane, let us know and we can get you some towels.

In order to keep this 200 year old Farmhouse in it's current immaculate condition, and it's plumbing in working condition, we cannot have more than 4 persons here in summer, 6 persons other times of year. We do not rent for parties or family reunions, sorry! This is a great house for couples or small family getaways, but not appropriate if you are planning to entertain.

The yard out front is where we spend our time, overlooking the lake and mountains beyond. There is a local road between us and the lake, but we are above it and it is somewhat obscured. We have four Adirondack chairs for lounging and enjoying the view. Large picnic table, fire pit and large Weber grill.

This is lake country so drives to the different lakes can be fun. Great antiquing and white water rafting up this way.

FALL FOLIAGE is AMAZING from the farmhouse! We have unobstructed views of color filled mountains, doubled by the reflection of these mountains on the lake, really is a sight to see!

WINTER

Winter is magical here! Cozy and warm inside, great sporting opportunities right out your front door. Snowshoe or cross country ski across the lake or on one of the many trails through the snow covered woods. Lapland Lake is a world class cross country resort with reindeer and authentic Finnish food. Downhill ski at family friendly Oak Mt. just a 15 minute drive, or much larger Gore which is 35 minutes away. Ice fishing, snowmobiling, and of course winter hiking to our local waterfalls are other favorite activities.

Speculator (next town over) rents snowmobiles, you can sled from here to Canada on wide expanse of groomed trails - this is amazing snowmobile country. Guided tours available for those trying it for the first time. Give it a shot - experiencing the Adirondack woods in winter, gliding over lakes, stopping in at different Pubs for a pint and a stew can be great fun. Highly recommended.

MORE ABOUT THE FARMHOUSE

This is one of the oldest homes in town - was a working farm for 100+ years. Fully renovated 2010. Sits on elevated 3/4 acre overlooking Lake Algonquin. Truly gorgeous view.

Porch - there is a large porch on the backside of house. Can read out there or store your skiis and toys. There is a sitting area to remove and store shoes so if you would like to be shoe free in house, as we are, it is convenient.

What might you NOT love? RECYCLES - are a real hassle here. Guests must agree to take them home if you brought a lot. Leaving a few is fine, but you must agree to follow the towns strict recycle rules - they must be kept clean and separate from garbage. We (i.e. the housekeeper) then have to take them to the dump and separate them into bins by hand. We simply cannot handle this task if large amounts are left. So - our general rule here is, if you bring it in, you must agree to take it out! Leaving a small amount (less than one bag full) is fine, and will be hauled to dump by our fabulous housekeeper.

No smoking, no pets (no exceptions, sorry!) and no candles please, this is an allergy sensitive home.

Watercraft is available for use May-Oct.

About Maura

Maura is a lifelong Adirondacker, her family has been vacationing in Wells for 4 generations. David and Maura spend lots of time here in all seasons, and have fallen in love with renovating houses. We now have 4 lakeside renovated homes, plus the original family camp, all available for vacation rental.

Maura purchased this farmhouse in 2009

Why Maura chose New York

Stunning Views, Luxury Inside, Rugged Adirondacks Outside

What makes this farmhouse unique

We love the fact that this house used to be the scariest one in town....but we always thought it must have the best view...and we were right! Since we gut renovated in 2010, it now has all the comforts of a modern luxury year round home combined with reclaimed wood floors with antique furnishings and features...and was redesigned to best capture those views! Amenities include kayaks, bikes, stand up paddle board, snowshoes, Weber Grill, Firepit, picnic table. Fishing pier across the street. Wireless Internet, 40' flat screen, an Alexa sound system, Chefs Kitchen with killer views while cooking! Great master queen bedroom with views as well.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Thanks so much for sharing your lovely Farmhouse. We cooked up a storm in the great kitchen next to the fire. Some much desired snowfall came along so we snowshoed up Mt. Sawyer to some awesome views. Thanks for providing them!

We would love to come back to see the area in different seasons.

The Farmhouse Retreat!

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at the Farmhouse was absolutely perfect. It is rustic with a touch of class. The large kitchen incredibly well equipped...and unlike many VRBO rentals this home doesn't feel at all as if it was "garage sale furnished". It is incredibly well maintained, and offers a view that is literally beyond words. The photos give you a sense, but are not nearly as beautiful as every sunset we witnessed.

Addressing the review about being near the hydroelectric dam, we were quite pleasantly surprised when we arrived well after dark and thought we heard the sounds of a fast rushing stream or small waterfall, which only served to enhance the overall experience of being immersed in nature. The property offers a very private back yard, despite the little traveled road that sits beneath it...we heard perhaps ten cars throughout our four day stay and it wasn't an issue at all.

Maura is a wonderfully responsive owner!! On our first morning we went to shower and discovered the master bath faucet was inoperable. One call to Maura and it was repaired as quickly as possible without fuss. This is an attentive owner whose responsive and speedy communication was greatly appreciated.

The Farmhouse is spotless, restful, and a place that, without hesitation, I would recommend to others and hope to visit again next year!!

Wonderful Stay at the Farmhouse!

  • 5 of 5

We recently stayed at the Farmhouse from June 30-July 3. Everything was as described and the communication from Maura was outstanding. The packet with all the information was extremely helpful and clear especially since there are some specific directions for garbage, recycling and the cleaning procedures. The house was comfy, the outdoor space was awesome and the access to the lake across the street was great for fishing or just relaxing. We loved the big kitchen for family meals and it was stocked with everything we needed. All of the windows allowed for a nice breeze for sleeping in the evenings. Thank you again to Maura for a wonderful stay!

Don't be fooled! Cons outweigh Pros

  • 3 of 5

PROS -

Location - Lake Algonquin is beautiful, quiet picturesque and somewhat centrally located.

Lovely home - The house is well-maintained the beds are comfortable and the bathrooms are clean and functional.

CONS -

-You are greeted by a pedantic manifesto of house rules and chores to be performed, a big turn off!

-Beyond commonsense rules you get the impression that renting the property creates anxiety for the owner who then transmits it to you. It just goes on and on ad nauseam. Being aware of this in advance would've made the difference between renting or not.

-Owner will not hesitate to charge you if the rules are not strictly followed. With over 20 years experience renting properties around the world this is the first time I got charged for not sorting recycle correctly! (ridiculous as that may sound)

-Property is directly next door to a hydroelectric power plant that is quite an eyesore.

The bottom line is this place is more work than it's worth... There are plenty of lovely rentals all around Lake Algonquin and nearby that you can enjoy without any of the hassle of this property.

Owner's Response: Our town has recycle rules and garbage pick-up dates that need to be followed by us and our guests – all in an effort to preserve the pristine environment of the Adirondacks and to ensure a clean arrival for future guests. Following house instructions is a relatively easy and necessary part of staying here. We have done our best to be clear about expectations by stating them in our ad and the online lease, therefore there should be no surprises. Neglecting to put garbage out for pick-up, leaving large amounts of recycling, or mixing recycles with garbage is problematic, extremely unpleasant to have to remedy, and may incur added fees. We love sharing our home and have done all that we can to provide an exceptionally comfortable base for your Adirondack adventures. Guests have been great, most are more than considerate and many return time and again to this home or to one of our many others in the area. If you are not clear on something or need assistance while there, please let us know – our local house manager is available to ensure that your stay (and our house!) are both running smoothly.

Something for everyone

  • 5 of 5

Our family ranges from the get-up-and-go'ers to the sit-and-dreamers. So it's hard to find a place that all of us enjoy, but the Farmhouse more than filled the bill. Hiking, biking, kayaking, or just staring for long stretches at the exceptional view--we each found our happy place there. A wonderfully comfortable (and comforting) place!
