Awesome location on the Eastern shore - relaxing week on the beach and bay!
We loved our week at this house on the Eastern Shore. The location is remarkable...a short walk to the community beach which we had mostly to ourselves, 10-15 min from Cape Charles, and the natural beauty off of the dock was amazing. We brought kayaks to explore the creek (caught lots of fish), went crabbing, and spent many hours on the beach. We enjoyed our daily morning coffee on the dock (built-in chairs there were awesome!) and relaxed instantly watching the wildlife and listening to the gentle water sounds. The neighborhood is very quiet but we met many neighbors and felt at home. The house is comfortable and had many baby-friendly amenities (high chair, toys, pack and play) and were very comfortable there with six adults and one baby. The house is nothing fancy and was consistent with the description. Wifi was terrible, as other reviewers have stated, but after chatting with neighbors that may not be a simple issue to fix. I recommend bringing a wifi hotspot or using your phone for a hotspot and bringing old school dvds to avoid streaming video. Also, wifi is in Cape Charles 10-15 away. We are really happy with our week's stay on the Eastern Shore and the wonderful vacation we had here.
The home was decent but needs some Improvements
Our overall stay wasn't bad but I expected more for the price of the rental. I'm a picky person anyways so maybe some of the issues I have won't bother others at all. The good things about the house are the size, location, comfortable beds and plenty off cookware, dishes and linens. All of the appliances worked like they should and the ac was able to keep up during 100+ degree days. There is also a nice grill available to use. The neighbors were very friendly and helpful also. I feel like the house needs some updating/TLC. The master bedroom shower is very small and leaks water pretty bad if you aren't careful where the spray head is pointing. The vinyl flooring is peeling up where the shower door is because of this. The wifi is either extremely slow or non existent. We called the owner or the realtor and they had us reset it but it didn't help. The screened in porch has a large tear in it so bugs can get in and you can't hardly see the water due to trees and brush. It's only a narrow opening to walk on to the dock. The listing also showed to have kayaks but there weren't any. We thought they may be in the garage but there is no access to the garage. The owner said that the kayaks shouldn't be listed and that the garage is used for storage. The last issue is the grass was pretty tall when we arrived and was obviously cut when it was pretty tall the last time due to the piles of grass clippings all over. Like I said, that may not bother some folks but it does me. When you play in the yard with the kids you end up tracking grass every where. Overall I think it has a lot more potential. A few repairs, some TLC and a little more attention to the smaller details would really help this place out. If the price of the rental was cheaper then I don't think some of the things I listed would've been an issue. It's still a great place and my family had a good time which is really all that matters in the end. I just wanted to give my honest opinion on the property so the owner could make improvements if they wanted and future renters would know what to expect. By the way, don't forget bug spray!
Huge property in quiet rural location
The other reviewers are right, the pictures do not do this property justice - the Cottage is huge, great bedrooms and a lovely open plan lounge dining, kitchen area. Very pleasant small residential neighbourhood (on the site of the Arlington Plantation). The Creek that the jetty sticks out onto is simply beautiful. Wifi connectivity easy and consistent, the kitchen has all you could wish for, a real home from home.
Some of the lounge furnishings could benefit from a make over it is a little tired, but the linens and cleanliness was first rate. Lots of info on local attractions. Only thought to bear in mind - this is in a real quiet location, so this is a true getaway property. Cape Charles is the nearest town, which is a quiet Lake Wobegon kind of place. Perfectly charming.
Exploring Cape Charles
The house is clean, private and spacious. Very comfortable bed, which I often don't find in a vacation rental. The property manager was friendly and helpful, as were the neighbors with suggestions for local attractions to explore. From the living room, we enjoyed watching the hawks and eagles flying over the bay. Our visits to the Shanty for dinner and Kelly's Gingernut Pub for lunch were memorable.
First Rental of Season
We stayed at the Sandy Harbor Cottage for a week at the end of April/first part of May. The cottage layout is as depicted although some of the furnishings have been replaced with equally suitable ones. We think this was the first rental of the 2014 season and the rental company didn't give it a careful review before we arrived; i.e., missing light bulbs, no internet, and no garage access. We contacted the leasing agent and they took care of all of the issues ASAP. The location is terrific, quiet, rural - away from the busy hub bub of the city. A wonderful place to spent a relaxing vacation. Since there were just the two of us, we had ample room and the king bed was comfortable. The yard and dock is an added plus. Beautiful sunsets from the dock. We would stay here again.
Absolutely loved this location. Great Family Vaca
The pictures do not do this justice. The house is bigger than it looks from the pictures and from the outside. Loved fishing off of the back pier. Loved having our own little beach to visit. Very close to Virginia Beach, nice day trip, but we spent a majority of our time at this lovely cottage. Neighbors are very friendly. House is very clean and well maintained. I am keeping this property in my favorites.
