About Hilary Nicholson

This house was originally built in the 1950's by my father for my grandmother. My grandmother chose this site because of the lovely woods, nearby streams and a 150 year old white oak tree that now stands guard in the garden. I later expanded the house and added an upstairs for my children and myself when I used the house for weekends in the 1990's.

Why Hilary Nicholson chose Litchfield County

Proceeds from your rental will assist the owners to support the Livingston Ripley Waterfowl Conservancy (LRWC) and allow for the continued conservation of wetland habitat and rare endangered waterfowl. LRWC is one of the pre-eminent facilities for breeding rare and endangered waterfowl in the world. Private tours are available for visiting guests who become members of LRWC. Public tours are always available. Checkout the Livingston Ripley Waterfowl Conservancy

What makes this house unique

The property is very peaceful. No cars or sirens can be heard. Birds abound in the woods and across the dirt road that passes by the house are duckponds filled with a variety of rare species. When the wind blows just so. you can sometimes hear a Trumpeter Swan call.........

Beautiful sanctuary!

  • 5 of 5

This is a wonderful house for family get togethers! Secluded and surrounded by beautiful yard, fields and woods yet close to markets, restaurants and Litchfield town center. Also, close to parks and lakes.

The rooms are spacious, clean and well furnished. Bathrooms are large, clean and updated. The large eat-in kitchen has a delightful sunroom for more casual eating and socializing.

Hilary was very responsive to any of our questions and requests. Could not be more delighted with our stay and will look forward to returning!

Great country house!

  • 4 of 5

Great house nestled back in the woods with a charming country setting. House was equipped with all the essentials, a lot of rooms to congregate in. Totally agree with a previous review that the photos do not justify the real thing. We would definitely stay here again next year!

Clean, beautiful house and a welcoming

  • 5 of 5

The house was very clean and accommodated for all of our needs. House was close to market, restaurants, etc but also in a nice, secluded area surrounded by nature. Property owner is very welcoming, helpful, and easy to work with. Would definitely do business with again.

Best VRBO Ever!

  • 5 of 5

For the last five years, we have taken our children, grandkids and family dogs away for a "family week." This property is large enough so that we were able to be close, and yet not on top of each other. The bedrooms and bedding reminded us of a b&b. The house is spacious, the kitchen and dining areas were very convenient and equipped. The house is secluded enough that you know you are away, but in 5 minutes you can be at the local supermarket (a real one, not the local overpriced delis), CVS and liquor store, and you are not far from Costco, Staples, etc., either, if you need them. Hilary was very accommodating and promptly responsive to any questions. The pool area is private and very relaxing. There are local attractions that were good for those who wanted to go exploring. The biggest problem is that you know you have to return to reality sooner or later.....

Delightful family vacation

  • 4 of 5

We spend 10 days with my Family from France in this lovely home and had a great time.

This house is nicely secluded, spacious and fun to spend time at.

The garden is neat and nicely shaped.

And the fact that the swimming pool is a little away from the house yet accessible within a minute's distance is just perfect.

Relaxing, scenic, private

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed a marvelous week at this property in August 2015. Our family of four was joined by 3 friends and there was plenty of room for everyone. The photographs don't really do the rooms justice - specifically, the upstairs master bedroom and bath were a dream. The children (ages 6 & 8) and adults alike were in love with the pool, which is in such a lovely and private setting. To be honest, we could barely tear ourselves away from the home to go into town and explore for lunch one day. Location is extremely convenient to groceries, drug store, restaurants, etc and the kitchen is very well equipped. We were particularly delighted with the selection of gourmet spices! Evenings were spent enjoying cocktails and dinner on the back porch, with the kids running in the spacious green yard. The kids really loved the all Netflix tv! We cannot wait to return next summer.
