If you're looking for uninterrupted views and relaxation on a mountaintop, this is the spot for you!
Lost River, West Virginia is a special place. It is situated between the George Washington National Forest, the Lost River State Park, and miles upon miles of pastoral country roads and farmsteads. The Lost River area attracts visitors who love the outdoors and enjoy hiking, biking, horseback riding, canoeing, fishing, skiing (Massanutten, Canaan Valley, Bryce Resort, and Snowshoe), and geo-catching. It's also a popular destination for antiquing and taking in Appalachian culture through the local arts and crafts scene (Lost River Artisans Cooperative and Museum). This property is central to it all, and the perfect weekend retreat from Washington, DC (2 hours), Baltimore, MD (3 hours), Richmond, VA (3 1/2 hours) or Philadelphia (5 hours)!
For the foodies: The owner loves to bake and cook, so the kitchen is well-stocked with cookware, spices, and basic ingredients (flour, sugar, baking powder, etc.). You can even pick some herbs from the herb garden. Spend the night in with friends or family enjoying dinner by the fireplace, or outside grilling and dining in the screened porch to nature's chorus of crickets and other creatures that inhabit the area. Or, spend the night out enjoying a gourmet meal at the Guest House at Lost River or Lost River Brewery. The Lost River Grill is also a popular spot for drinks and live entertainment. Lunch at the General Store is highly recommended (the BBQ pork sandwich is a favorite!).
For the adventurous, the Lost River area has a lot to offer! If you're a triathlete, take advantage of the world-class rural roads for running and biking, and Trout Pond for open-water swims. Lost River is also a hiker's paradise--Big Schloss (George Washington National Forest) and Cranny Crow (Lost River State Park) are two popular favorites. Lost River is also a great launching site for nearby canoe and tube float trips. The old timber roads on the mountain (immediately accessible from the property) make for some spectacular mountain biking and snowshoeing (2 pairs of snowshoes are available for complimentary use). Winter in Lost River is spectacular for both nesters and adventurers! Hit the slopes of Bryce, Massanutten, Canaan Valley and Snowshoe (a little more distant, but close enough to return home in time for a crockpot dinner).
For the sightseers and shoppers, no visit to Lost River is complete without a visit to the Lost Rivers Artisans Cooperative and Museum (the owner's hand-screened t-shirts are among the many locally crafted items for sale).
For the Yogis, grab your mat because Lost River is a perfect place for practice, and the Yoga Barn (offering regular morning classes throughout the Spring, Summer & Fall) is right down the mountain!
For the homebodies, this property is also for you. Grab a beer and chill in the hammock with a book. Settle on the sofa with your favorite shows on Netflix or Hulu (there's Apple TV), or choose a DVD from the library. Lounge on the deck, taking in the gorgeous views, birds and other wildlife (deer, black bear, wild turkeys, squirrels, fox...) . Grab the cribbage board or cornhole boards. Or do absolutely nothing! So many options...

About Derek Howard
Life in Lost River for me began as a weekend retreat from my environmental law practice in Washington, DC. I loved life in Lost River so much that I made it my full-time home for over five years as a telecommuter. In Lost River, I enjoy hiking, snow skiing, training for triathlons (running and biking world-class rural roads, open-water swimming at Trout Pond), tossing bags in the Lost River Cornhole League, painting and silk screening (check out my T-shirts for sale at the Lost River Artisans Coop!), and nesting on the homefront (reading, writing and cooking). With some exciting career and life changes, Lost River has become a part-time retreat again. I'm happy to begin this new chapter of sharing my place when I'm away with others looking for the perfect place to relax and recreate!

Perfect Basecamp for our hiking adventures
I believe this is our 4th trip here and we love it more and more each time.
Even on a snowy spring weekend, we loved our visit and still made our annual trek to Cranny Crow in Lost River St Park.
Derek is always the perfect host, very flexible and accommodating and his home away is fabulous.
Love at first sight... = )
let me start with this... pictures don't describe accurately... it's much BETTER than the pictures. The layout of the cabin, decoration furniture, and the view the was breathtaking. Its funny but my most fav area was master bathroom... :D It had a wall-size window, dreamy view landscape and trees and Derek's Paintings hang on the wall. The bed was very comfortable, we had everything we needed in the kitchen "very clean, and we did our best to leave it clean and very neat as well". Beautiful "Cabin style" dishes, one another thing that I loved was ... an oil diffuser which I love to have around. Very cozy ... same time very high tech.. Apple Tv was plus. Internet was really high speed. Derek was very accommodating... our departure date was rainy and we requested to delay our departure to be safer... Not to mention that I left my electronic toothbrush, they are shipping it to me( sorry for the extra trouble, Derek)... Overall we really enjoyed our stay there... and absolutely I am looking forward to going back and have that view seen in springtime. Thank you so much for sharing your lovely and beautiful place with us. = )
The cabin was everything we hoped for in a peaceful and quiet setting. It was well stocked with everything we needed to enjoy our stay. The owner is very responsive and attentive. Looking forward to staying here again in the future.
We love coming here, this is our 3rd trip I believe and it is just so relaxing, peaceful and beautiful. Derek is very accommodating and has been fabulous to work with. The only negative is having to leave!
The view is wonderful and the cabin provided the setting for the relaxing weekend away we desperately needed!
We really enjoyed our stay in Lost River. Not much to do, but we were at a wedding, so it was conveniently close to the guesthouse. The place had no mirrors...except at the bathroom sinks, which seemed very odd as we were dressing for a wedding. not even in a closet door was there a mirror. The front door did not lock well, and we had to leave the key for the caretaker on the kitchen counter, and close door tightly....seemed weird. The road was also very bad leading up to the rental. lots of bumps and the road is dirt...certainly not the owners fault, just giving my review. The house itself was eclectic, and cozy. We had a nice time.
