Why MICHELLE SIMONETTE LEBLANC chose Black Pearl
There is no more vibrant, personable, and walkable section of New Orleans then Riverbend where the myriad of 19th-century houses and its people have such character. Since I write and lecture on the historical gardens I have found a great resource from my strolls through the glorious neighbourhoods that surround my Oulala House/ Pool & Gardens.
What makes this House unique
Experience the charm of an authentic 19th century New Orleans home with its upscale comforts yet historical references. The 12 ft-14 ft. ceilings, exquisite furnishings, and large rooms are one of the first things some guest note on their arrival. Others enjoy exploring the rooms to view the fine art and antiques that they discover on their stay. However, one of the most wonderful experience is the warm and gracious setting one feels in the kitchen for breakfast or dinner where fond memories are made through good food and conversation. You will want to cook in this kitchen and then slip outside to the outside dining area to enjoy the twinkling lights strung along the 7- foot stucco walled garden wall all year long. The favorite spot most of my guests enjoy gathering is the verdant expanse of the pool area with its numerous seating areas The sound of the fountains flowing makes for a romantic candle lite night. In the warmer months most of my guest have chosen to sip cocktails by the pool while they take a refreshing dip after a day of sightseeing. There are many places to have private conversations on the grounds that has several gardens enclosed behind stucco walls and antique gates. My favourite is stargazing on the upstairs terrace on a clear night.

Mardi Gras Oasis
This house surrounded our small group with New Orleans charm, character and atmosphere. The house is well decorated with antiques and has high ceilings. The weather was too cool for us to enjoy sitting in the garden around the small pool. It is close to the St. Charles street car so it is very easy to get to the French Quarter and Garden District. The neighborhood was very quiet, even during the second weekend of Mardi Gras.
The owner is very responsive and full of good information for first-time visitors as well as seasoned travelers.
This is a very special house and our group highly recommends it for anyone looking for the full immersive New Orleans experience.
La cite d Orleans is old. It has roots that go beyond almost every other American city. It is a melancholy city, but it keeps up a brave face and let's Les bon temps rouler. You can stay in the madness of le vieux carre, on the outskirts of it in the CBD/warehouse district or you could immerse yourself and stay in the authentical home of an Acadienne.
Oulala house lies on the edge of the beautiful garden district. With easy access to hotspots such as brigtsens, Jacques imos, Phillips Vincent's Camellia house and Cooter browns. It is an old and rambling property, but it is decorated with charm and intelligence. Where else do you find the complete works of Milton in the bathroom and Keats waiting for you in the entrance? And the kitchen stocked with wine, margaritas, bread, eggs and snacks on arrival? The house is beautifully furnished in French turn of the century style. It has several comfortable beds, an extensive library and two screened porches delightfully furnished. The back garden and pool is wonderfully romantical and there's ample opportunity for Al fresco meals. It is not a property for minimalist techies but for people that have kept a soul and with the ability to see Harmony and beauty in an aging domicile. The house is old and it shows it's age but do you criticize Mona Lisa because of the age of the painting? The owner, Michelle is unfailingly helpful. St Charles streetcar is literally only steps away. Earplugs do come in handy for light sleepers but the garden district is a HAVEN compared to the mayhem of downtown. It is also a very SAFE place.
We will gladly come back.
Thank you for your kind words and your charming company. I enjoyed so much meeting you. You were much too generous to give me a marvelous bottle of Calvados from your village in Sweden and the rare book of 16th c illustrations of flowers. I felt on first sight, that we were old friends.
Your whimsical emails to me over the past year and your wisdom on the culinary scene in New Orleans amazed me, and my sister, Lisa LeBlanc-Berry, who as I shared with you, is an accomplished food-critic and writer of the New Orleans restaurant scene.
Only a well-seasoned world traveler as yourself and the post owner of a bed and breakfast in Sweden, would understand the arduous demands of making an historic 4800 square ft. home up to par for the traveler seeking a modern experiecne My home filled with fine art and antiques is a gem for those seeking an authentic New Orleans experience, and as you pointedly referenced, not for those who want everything in the minimalist tradition.
As you noted and as I must point out, ever wall of my home is adorned with important pieces of art well beyond the boundaries of most VRBO settings.
Very rare collectables adore the display cabinets and hundreds of books can be found in bookshelves throughout the house. And yes, poetry is my muse, so why not a book of verse or two in every bathroom bin.
My staff comprised of my foreman, housekeeper, concierge and 24 hour repair man, all appreciate the Oulala House we present to our guests. I always try to give my "white glove treatment" and to assure the house is "party perfect," before each guests' arrival. In your case, you arrived a night early, one day before your reservation . As you may remember , this took me by great surprise. However, if there are any extra stars you could give me in which you have already given me the maximum of 5 stars, for the seamless transition my staff did to accommodate you on an early moments notice, and with no extra charge asked, just our actions to rush to complete the home in transition for your surprise arrival, that would have been wonderful, if you had pointed this out to our guests. As, despite the fact we were not able to greet you in our normal fan fare fashion with Lisa giving you a grand tour and talking the au current restaurant scene with you, our foreman, Eddie Robinson, quickly greeted your unexpected arrival at 7:30 at night and made certain that all was well. You were a marvelous guest! Next Year!
This property was absolutely perfect for our family. Everything we could ask for was waiting for us both inside and out. Great location, super comfortable and “home-like”. We’ve never had a rental so stocked with everything like home. Both Michelle and Lisa were just wonderful to work with and made the whole experience even more magical for us! We highly recommend this property to anyone looking for a real NOLA dream stay 💕
Exceeded our expectations
Thank you for opening up your house to us. We were extremely surprised by all that it had to offer. The details that were so considerately planned out, like the bottles of wine, baskets of snacks, breakfast items, etc... were more than we could have expected. Everyone in our party was completely amazed and delighted. We will definitely recommend this home to our friends and family. Thank you again!
