Family-Friendly Oceanfront Estate with Privacy, Great Swimming, Calm Water

Bedrooms 5
Property type house
Minimum Stay 7 nights

About the property

5 Bedrooms, 4 Baths, Sleeps 14

Welcome to Balara Manor, a grand Bahamian estate home featuring 5 bedrooms, 4 baths, great room, parlor, and a library with a futon. Originally built half a century ago from traditional quarried stone, Balara Manor has been remodeled with updated kitchen and baths.

Balara Manor is generously proportioned with 4000 square feet of living space. Enter the house through a large sunlit parlor with spectacular views of the Caribbean. This room includes a breakfast area, also with ocean views. Past the parlor is the great room with a formal dining area and a media area with a large flat screen TV. This room also looks out on the Caribbean through a wall of windows. The modern, fully equipped kitchen is connected to the great room. . The two master bedroom suites, one king and one queen, are on opposite ends of the house for privacy. Each has an en-suite bathroom.

Two more bedrooms (one queen and one double) are located in the middle of the house and share a bath. The fifth bedroom is furnished with two twin beds and has a private bath. Pass through this room to the library which has a futon that can sleep two more guests.

There are also two inflatable beds that can be placed in any bedroom.

Enter the estate via a 350-foot-long driveway. Balara Manor's two private acres are landscaped with many varieties of palm trees and flowering shrubs and plants. Depending on time of the year, the large garden can provide you with an excellent selection of fresh vegetables and herbs.

The oceanfront gazebo offers many hours of shade from the tropical Bahamian sun. Walk down the 20' wide Roman-style steps into the warm, sandy-bottomed turquoise waters ideal for swimming, snorkeling, or bone fishing. You can watch the bonefish, along with many other species of fish, swim past the gazebo. We have seen everything from stingrays to dolphins swimming in the bay. For those who like to watch from a closer vantage point, we have three kayaks for your enjoyment.

A 10 minute walk will bring you across the island to the Atlantic side of the island. This will give you miles of pink sand to walk and explore.

Best Trip to Eleuthera Yet

  • 5 of 5

The Balara Manor was perfect for our family getaway. When my wife and I, our three children (6,8,9), and a friend pulled into the property's driveway, and saw the gorgeous views, we were spellbound by the beauty! My son even asked me if I could put on the song, "I think I'm gonna like it here," from the Annie soundtrack because he loved what he saw so much.

In the mornings, I jogged to the nearby people-less beaches (Twin Coves Beach, French Leave Beach, and other). When I returned to the property, I took a dip in the shallow (3-4 feet deep) turquoise waters to cool off, and then read under the veranda. The unspeakable tranquility that the Balara Manor provides was perfect for us.

The property is in the middle of the island, so we rented a car to explore. We drove north and ferried to Spanish Wells (too crowded for me), and drove south to Rock Sound. We visited some of the most awesome beaches I've ever seen.

For those who are afraid of reptiles, I should mention that the property grounds have several harmless, though chunky, curly-tailed lizards. Three of them were inside the property upon our arrival, and I had to catch and remove all of them before my wife and children, and our family-friend could relax.

Having said that, we would all return to the Balara Manor again. There are just so many great things about it.

Also, I must say that Julianna was simply amazing and incredibly helpful in helping us rent the property. She and her assistant, Tara, coordinated everything with the owners and the property manager for us, making our arrival and check-in smooth.

Thank you all SO much for making our trip to Eleuthera so unforgettable! We hope to return soon.

Not as updated as we were expecting.

  • 4 of 5

Balara Manor had everything we needed but it was described and the pictures lead us to believe it was in pristine condition. The floor tiles were cracked throughout the house, paint was chipped off walls in several rooms and it needed a deep cleaning. But I have to say that comparing it to other houses in the area it was still better than most. The wifi works but it isn't centrally located in the house so you can't use it from all areas.

Lovely - With Plenty of Everything!

  • 5 of 5

Balara Manor is absolutely charming, with lot's of Bahamian colors, character and plenty of everything your family will need for a wonderful vacation. The beds, linens, towels are abundant and top-notch. Everyone will have privacy and space to unwind. You may not need to use the same bathroom twice (there are many full bathrooms).

Outside, the grounds are lovingly maintained and very private, with expansive views of Balara Bay. Coffee at sunrise and pina coladas at sunset from the covered patio became an easy routine. Located in the center of the island, right near Governor's Harbor, you'll have easy access gas stations, restaurants, and a little shopping. Excellent "home base" for your daily excursions. We loved it!

Matt Simon at Eleuthera Vacation Rentals, and his assistant, were helpful and attentive from the planning phase and throughout our visit. I highly recommend! The homeowners were also very attentive and helpful. There is a "blue book" -- a three ring binder -- on site at the property with excellent beach and day-trip ideas.

Tips for family travelers: avoid our mistakes & what we would do next time

* There is no sense of urgency on Eleuthera; sometimes things work, sometimes they don't. PRINT & BRING your research notes to make the most of your time. Reserve fishing/snorkeling in advance, and book back-up dates to avoid disappointment and unavailability.

* Be sure your cell phones are set up with a global plan BEFORE you get to the Bahamas.

* Bring a cooler of frozen food to help defray dining expenses (and you'll have a cooler to use for the beach).

* If your short on vacation time, bring a GPS for your rental car and look for cell phone App to help you find the best hidden beaches. We could have been much more efficient in finding and getting to the beaches. It's fun to explore, but our time was so limited we wished we were better prepared.

* You'll need more cash than you think... not many places take credit cards.

*Don't forget insect repellent, anti-itch cream (no-see-ums) and lots of sunblock -- very expensive and limited selection at the convenience stores. (There is an Aloe Vera plant in the Balara's garden which helps with the bug bites.)

Beautiful Historical Bahamian Home on the Ocean

  • 5 of 5

Balara Manor is a beautiful, sprawling home located right on the ocean. You can enjoy your meals in the airy living room/dining room area while enjoying the view of the turquoise water. This large house has five large bedrooms with new ensuite washrooms. The interior of the house is beautifully decorated and it has everything that you will need for a luxury vacation. The patio area is equipped with several loungers and lawn chairs and you can also sit under the gazebo right next to the water. Balara Bay is shallow and calm, which makes for wonderful swimming, kayaking, and shelling. The grounds are beautifully manicured, with a variety of tropical trees and flowers. It is the perfect location, since it is a very short drive into Governor's Harbour. We have been lucky enough to stay in this property several times and each time we enjoy it even more. Balara Manor is a piece of Bahamian history that you should experience.

Balara Manor, Eleuthra

  • 4 of 5

We had a wonderful vacation at Balara Manor over this past christmas. The listing photos gave us a clear idea of what to expect and Matt was extremely helpful, especially when we were trying to figure out the travel logistics. We had a great time swimming at the little beach out front with our young kids and hanging out on the patio facing the water. The house is a short drive to Governor's Harbor though you wouldn't want to walk it as the cars drive very fast on the narrow road. Francois, the gardener, was really friendly and shared a wealth of local and botanical information. We ended up renting a mini-van through Big T, Balara's property manager, and he was a very easy-going friendly guy.

We loved getting bread fresh from the local bakery, bonefishing off Windemere Island, kitesurfing off the old Club Med beach, snorkelling on the far side of Levi Island, and eating at Tippy's. I would definitely recommend this property to anyone coming with a large family. The kayaks and inflatable orca were great additions. A few more paddles would have enabled us to launch the whole flotilla at once, but this was a minor detail. As for the house, the only drawback we found was the small kitchen which was lacking a dishwasher. That said we hope to come back to stay at Balara Manor again, and if there is a dishwasher when we return the place should be renamed Balara Paradise.

The town of Governors Harbour, less than 2 miles away, has a charming collection of 19th century homes and churches overlooking its historic harbor. Buy fresh fish and lobster every afternoon from fisherman at the town dock, or visit the recently restored Haynes Library, which dates from 1897, for the weekly coffee hour for foreign residents and tourists. Governors Harbour has grocery stores, restaurants, liquor stores, two banks with ATMs, a bakery, gift shops, a dive shop, and a medical clinic. Friday Night Fish Fry in Governors Harbour, a street/beach party that brings together all the tourists and locals with food, drink, and dancing in the street, is not to be missed.

Eleuthera is famous for its 100 miles of spectacular, deserted beaches. The island, home to just 8000 residents, is completely safe any time of the day or night. Enjoy the rare experience of picking up hitch-hikers and leaving your keys in the car wherever you go. The snorkeling, diving, and fishing on the island are world class. Boating, surfing, and other water sports are also popular. You can rent power boats, sailboats, sea kayaks, bikes. You can have a charter captain take you out for excursions of various types. There is excellent sightseeing as well. Eleuthera has vast caves, cliffs, a bottomless ocean hole, many unique beaches, historic churches and 19th century homes, and small villages to explore. We hope you will enjoy our Balara Manor, and experience all our island has to offer.
