About Rod Archer

We live in Colorado and love to spend time in the Mountains fishing, hiking and enjoying nature.

Rod Archer purchased this cabin in 2013

Why Rod Archer chose Rocky Mountain National Park

For years we have been renting places near Grand Lake for our vacations. We decided that the only place we wanted to own a cabin was on Sun Valley Lake. This lake is the perfect size and a great location in one of the most beautiful places in the U.S.

What makes this cabin unique

A beautiful cabin in a tranquil, breathtaking setting with more activities nearby than you can do in a month. Hike, bike, ATV and snowmobile all from your front door. You are walking distance to Arapahoe National Forest and the Colorado River Headwaters for some great fly-fishing. Winding River Resort is nearby and features horseback riding and other resort activities. On the Trail rentals is also a short walk away featuring ATV rentals in summer and snowmobiles in winter. The cabin is very close to the quaint, historic town of Grand Lake with lots of great restaurants and family activities. Shadow Mountain Lake and Lake Granby are minutes away with fantastic fishing and water sports. You will be easy driving distance to skiing, golf, river rafting, ballooning and countless other winter and summer activities.

We join the other 5-star reviewers in "singing the praises" of Moose Tracks Manor, aka "A Little Bit of Heaven!" The property is aptly named in both respects - we saw moose stroll through and hang out at the property numerous times daily, and barely spent any time indoors, as the setting on the lake was so peaceful and relaxing and the scenery breathtaking. We spent hours just watching the squirrels, chipmunks, ducks, geese, osprey, finches, hummingbirds, and, of course, the moose. The beautiful private lake is stocked with trout, and just watching them jump and twist and flop back into the water was entertaining. The Manor is a wildlife photographer's delight, but there are also many other things to do - there is something for everyone of every age to enjoy. Fishing, canoeing, walks through the woods, a short jaunt to On the Trails ATV Rentals, and just a few minutes from Rocky Mountain National Park entrance or in to the town of Grand Lake. The huge covered lakeside porch allows one to sit outside even during a brief passing afternoon shower, and the separate "party deck," picnic table, lakeside swing, and fire pit provide additional wonderful gathering places. The log home was very spacious and included every possible amenity to make one's stay comfortable. The massive vaulted ceiling in the great room is truly impressive, and it is fun to just peer down from the sprawling loft above. Owners Rod and Jill go above and beyond at accommodating their guests, and the reservation process was very professional, efficient, and flawless. Our damage deposit had already been refunded by the time we returned home, barely 24 hours after our departure from the cabin. We suggest you take time to read the excellent Renter's Guide they provide, as it gives a vast amount of information about your stay at Moose Tracks. We are pleased that, in such an elegant home, they are still pet-friendly, so we were allowed to bring our little 5-pound Yorkie. Whether you're a couple seeking a quiet, relaxing stay, or an active family / group seeking fun on the waterfront, this place is perfect. It would be well suited for couples of any age, family gatherings, a girls' getaway, a guys' fishing retreat - as we said, there is definitely something for everyone! Grand Lake is our favorite area when we want to escape city

life for a while - and we've now found the "Perfect Spot" we'd been looking for - Moose Tracks Manor! Thanks to Rod & Jill, we'll definitely be back.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your thoughtful and thorough review. You certainly hit all of the aspects that we love about our mountain home, but we also like it in the winter! Moose Tracks Manor is the name given the property by the previous owner, and we decided to add the tag line: A Little bit of Heaven in Colorado, which sums up our feeling about the property and the setting. We feel very fortunate to have been able to own this property and we are eager to share it with thoughtful people like you. We are proud of Moose Tracks Manor and we work hard to make it a wonderful experience for our wonderful guests. It is gratifying to know that you and others appreciate our efforts. By the way, in addition to the wildlife you mentioned, there are also pine siskens, red naped sap suckers, downy and hairy woodpeckers, white pelicans, bald eagles, weasels, pine martens, fox and our brown bear. We also love taking wildlife pictures and rarely have to leave our own yard! Thanks again for your kind and thoughtful review, we look forward to seeing you becoming our frequent guests. Rod and Jill

Moose Tracks Manor is beautifull !

  • 5 of 5

We loved every minute of our stay in August 2016 and will certainly be going back again. It is one of the most peacefull places you'll ever see ,

on the beautifull lake, in the trees, and surrounded by trees and wildlife. It is everything the ad said and more. House was very clean. Played golf at Grand Lake course 10 minutes away and that too is beautifull. We certainly recommend it for anyone looking for a great getaway. We saw moose every day and of course it is 5 minutes to the National Park. Perfect by us.

Family Visit

  • 5 of 5

We just wanted to thank you and let you know that our family had a wonderful time at your lake home. Your home had everything that made it a comfortable living space and very convenient to cook. We cooked most of our meals in the well equipped cabin. We did have a lovely Friday night dinner in town at The Terrace Inn.

We saw a mother moose and her baby everyday either at the salt lick or down at the lake having a drink of water. We even saw a young male moose!

Everyone caught fish ranging in size from 12" to 18". We also enjoyed the canoe and boat. You also have the best pier on the lake which was nice for the 6 of us. So many different areas to enjoy....the pier, the swing, the porch and deck, the loft...nobody ever felt crowded.

We appreciate how easy you are to work with and thank you so much.

Sincerely, Mr & Mrs C and family from Denver

Perfect for our family get away.

  • 5 of 5

We had 9 in our party (7 adults and 2 children) and the cabin fit us perfectly. GPS took us to the front door. Right when we pulled up to the cabin, we saw a moose and they visited the area frequently while we were there. There were great instructions given prior to the stay and at the cabin itself, which made everything go seamless. The views from the cabin's dock are wonderful and make for great family photos. The lake is only about 4 feet deep and the canoe was great. I do wish the cabin had a Kayak and/or paddle board, that would have added to the fun. Just up the road is the Winding River Resort where we enjoyed horse back riding and I believe they rent out ATV's as well. They have a little gift shop for souvenirs and any convenience items. We also drove about 45 minutes to Kremmling and went white water rafting on the upper Colorado River, which was loads of fun. We brought our boat from Nebraska to use in Lake Grand, but I wouldn't recommend doing that. You don't need to, there is plenty to do. Plus, your boat will have to go through an intense inspection and hope they don't find any type of algae or it won't be allowed in the lake (we were told they will even quarantine your boat, so luckily we passed!). I would highly recommend this cabin and when back in the area I would stay here again.

Loved our cabin getaway.

  • 5 of 5

We have vacationed on Sun Valley Lake for the past seven years, renting a cabin for a week or so during June or July. This was our first experience renting this cabin, and we could not have been more pleased. The property is very homey, clean, and sits on a spectacular lot on the lake. The owner was very accommodating and answered any questions, etc promptly. We spent a majority of our time outside enjoying the cool summer temperatures, whether on the boat dock, on the porch, going on hikes, or fishing on the lake. Other than a few golf excursions, a visit to the Lodge and an afternoon in downtown Grand Lake, we could not pull ourselves away from this beautiful place. My daughter, husband and father caught many, many rainbow trout (most around 3 lbs, but a few closer to the 5 lb variety). We were treated to numerous visits from moose (a momma and her baby frequented the most), a gorgeous bull elk, otters, osprey, a pelican, numerous ducks and their adorable ducklings, and four geese that hung around the entire week. All in all, I cannot say enough about this property. It is stocked with virtually everything you will need. If you love the outdoors, enjoy wildlife and fishing, want a peaceful place to relax...this is your place. We cannot wait to make a reservation for next year!!
