*** All Nationalities Welcome! ***
The Mountain Star is located in the heart of the Coconino National Forest along the San Francisco Peaks scenic corridor between the mountain town of Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon. This spectacular and convenient location sets The Mountain Star apart from Williams and other rural locations. It can be rented for as little as 2 days, but is ideal for longer stays. See my personal site for lots of handy information at: TheMountainStar.com
The Mountain Star is less than one hour’s drive from the Grand Canyon’s main entrance, and if you don’t want to drive yourself, a local tour company van will pick you up directly from this property. So enjoy the Grand Canyon and then leave the heat and crowds behind to enjoy your very own mountain retreat!
The Mountain Star, located at an elevation of 8,000 feet (2,438 meters) on 5 beautiful acres and backed by National Forest land, offers breath-taking natural beauty, expansive views, direct and easy access to nature, boundless outdoor activities (nature walks and hikes, biking, climbing, etc.) and a spectacular night sky. It is a sanctuary for inspiration, relaxation, reflection and rejuvenation, as well as being perfectly situated for outdoor fun and adventure. Its spacious, 2nd-story wrap-around deck with picnic table, chairs and outdoor fireplace provides for unparalleled enjoyment of the mountain air and scenery.
Experience seeing the sun breach the horizon every morning and evening, moon rises and moon-sets too. When is the last time you let a mountain breeze, the expansive play of earth light and shadow, nature’s panorama and the rich senses of the moment guide your day of thoughts and activity? The Mountain Star offers this to you and your loved ones on a daily basis.
The Mountain Star is completely wind and sun powered (with an automatic propane generator backup system). During the warmer months, the home is 'air conditioned' with refreshing mountain air using the operable windows that are in every room of the house, ceiling fans throughout and the operable window blinds throughout...and nights are always refreshingly cool in the warmest of summertime. A powerful and effective evaporative cooler is also provided for the few occasions when a little extra cooling comes in handy! During the colder months, the Mountain Star stays warm with 3 radiant heaters, a gas 'fire place' and a very efficient, living room pellet stove.
All outdoor photographs on this site were taken directly from the living room or leisure deck of The Mountain Star.

About Rob Dutton
Hi, my name is 'Flagstaff' Rob Dutton. I am a photographer and musician formerly masquerading as a computer system's analyst. I enjoy meeting people from around the world and have always been an internationalist by nature and upbringing. I am enthusiastic about life and wholeheartedly believe that nature and natural beauty nurture the soul and aid creative and spiritual growth. My enthusiasm for life is directly fueled by my vision and creation of “The Mountain Star”. I designed her and completed construction in 2009. I enlisted a true craftsman to help me build. 'Inspired living' was my guiding principle for the location and design. She was built with lots of love and perseverance, and it excites me to share with others what “The Mountain Star” has to offer.
Why Rob Dutton chose Flagstaff
The Mountain Star sits in a rare and amazing location. It has the beauty and openness of a remote mountain location yet is only 20 miles from the key regional center and resort town of Flagstaff. It is easily accessed via a well-maintained and beautiful, undivided 2-lane highway (AZ 180) that exists almost exclusively to provide thoroughfare to the Grand Canyon. The Mountain Star’s five acres are part of an area known as Kendrick Park, a 180-acre private land “island” in the middle of the Coconino National Forest (the largest stand of Ponderosa Pine in North America). The home itself is directly backed by the national forest.
What makes this House unique
I believe this home offers the most beautiful and panoramic views available in Northern Arizona. The home’s extensive windowing was designed specifically for the views. The home directly faces the beautiful San Francisco Peaks to the south, Kendrick Mountain to the west, Saddle Mountain to the east and forested hills to the north. Though easily accessed, it is completely ”off-the-grid” and is powered by the sun and the wind. At 2,438 meters (8,000 feet) of elevation, the night sky is glorious.

Mountain Star is an amazing property with great location near the Grand Canyon
The Mountain Star was an amazing vacation home and exceeded all of our expectations. The home has great amenities and is located in a very convenient location close to Flagstaff and just an hour away from the Grand Canyon. It is clean, convenient and very comfortable. The setting around the property is serene and beautiful, with mountain views and starry skies at night.
Rob was an extremely welcoming host, and he provided a lot of great information on things to do in the area, including very helpful insights and tips for hiking the Grand Canyon, which did not disappoint! Overall, we truly enjoyed our stay at the Mountain Star resort and would recommend it enthusiastically.
Thank you for taking the time and making the effort to leave me this wonderful review. You are an outstanding young man and expect you will go far in this world!
Beautiful Home to Spend Time With Family
My wife and our two sons age 20 and 18 thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Mountain Star. Just like the Grand Canyon the pictures don’t do it justice until you see it for yourself. The house is clean, very well taken care of and has beautiful pictures, plants and other art work throughout. Everything in the listing is accurate. The kitchen is great. We cooked breakfast every morning and grilled out on the deck in the evenings. The view of Humphreys Peak never gets old. The stars at night are amazing! Rob personally checked us in, showed us around the house and gave great advice for things to do. We saw the Grand Canyon the first day (shoshone point hike and views are awesome!). The next day we hiked The Red Mountain Trail (The Red Mountain is amazing and is only 10 minutes away!), saw the Lava Cave (15 minutes away) and ate dinner in Flagstaff. We took a trip to Sedona the next day. The last day my two sons hiked to the top of Humphreys peak while my wife and I rode the scenic forest service roads in the area. Many places to stop and hike and take pictures. We did all of this yet we never felt rushed since everything is close by.
The entire area around the Mountain Star is truly a unique part of Gods’ creation. If you love the outdoors and appreciate nature this is the place to stay!
Great location, views and many amenities. Property owner extremely helpful. Night sky awesome.
If you enjoy hiking the wilderness this property offers you a perfect midpoint to a great many very scenic trails. We did not mind the commute to town for groceries and eats. Owners insights were on the mark. Our family, with our young adult kids had a great stay at mountain star. Would return again.
Mountain Star Memories
What a special place! We stayed at the Mountain Star in December 2017. I corresponded many times with Rob, the owner, asking questions, and getting his input. He was always quick to reply, friendly, and helpful. He proved to be an exceptional host from the start, by meeting us at the house. He gave us an informative tour, and provided instructions on how to use the pellet stove, etc.
There are so many pros re this house ( I call it a home, because it felt like home right from the start). But, here are the major pros:
-books and DVDs
-drum set for the musically inclined
-kitchen extremely well stocked ( spices, butter, s'more makings, etc)
-views are awesome. One really feels secluded.
-misc items provided: backpacks, flashlights, first aid kits, hats, coats, cooler, binoculars, craft room, and more
-owners photography throughout
We have stayed at many vrbo/homeaway cabins and houses throughout the years, and I have to say that this visit proved to be one of the best experiences we have ever had!!!
The Mountain Star was a most delightful home. we just loved it from top to bottom.
We enjoyed all the preparation and details for making this home a perfect vacation place. Rob had all aspects of the visiting, hiking, touristing, nature watching and enjoying wrapped up in a delightfully environmentally sound package. We liked all the personal touches and conveniences that he offered. We will recommend the Mountain Star to others. Being "Off the Grid" really appealed to us. We loved our stay!!
Mountain Star: Wonderful holiday home
The mountain Star is a pleasant , spacious home. It is well appointed with all that is necessary for comfortable living and more.
The owner is a photographer and his work is displayed throughout the house to effect.
The Mountain Star is conveniently located about an hour's drive south of the grand canyon and 30 minutes north of Sedona. The closest town at which to shop, Flagstaff, is about 20 minutes drive away.
There are lots of walking trails in the area and the owner of the Mountain Star provides helpful guides to the trails.
Beautiful ponderosa pine and aspen forest easily accessible (unless closed for snow) by well-maintained forest service roads. Beauty all around!
