Arizona House Rental Photos and Description

3 Bedroom, 2.5 bathroom Mountain Getaway with spectacular views

The Mountain Star is located in the heart of the Coconino National Forest along the San Francisco Peaks scenic corridor between the mountain town of Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon. This spectacular and convenient location sets The Mountain Star apart from Williams and other rural locations. It can be rented for as little as 2 days, but is ideal for longer stays. See my personal site for lots of handy information at: TheMountainStar.com

The Mountain Star is less than one hour’s drive from the Grand Canyon’s main entrance, and if you don’t want to drive yourself, a local tour company van will pick you up directly from this property. So enjoy the Grand Canyon and then leave the heat and crowds behind to enjoy your very own mountain retreat!

The Mountain Star, located at an elevation of 8,000 feet (2,438 meters) on 5 beautiful acres and backed by National Forest land, offers breath-taking natural beauty, expansive views, direct and easy access to nature, boundless outdoor activities (nature walks and hikes, biking, climbing, etc.) and a spectacular night sky. It is a sanctuary for inspiration, relaxation, reflection and rejuvenation, as well as being perfectly situated for outdoor fun and adventure. Its spacious, 2nd-story wrap-around deck with picnic table, chairs and chiminea (outdoor fireplace) provides for unparalleled enjoyment of the mountain air and scenery.

Experience seeing the sun breach the horizon every morning and evening, moon rises and moon-sets too. When is the last time you let a mountain breeze, the expansive play of earth light and shadow, nature’s panorama and the rich senses of the moment guide your day of thoughts and activity? The Mountain Star offers this to you and your loved ones on a daily basis.

The Mountain Star is completely wind and sun powered (with an automatic propane generator backup system). During the warmer months, the home is 'air conditioned' with refreshing mountain air using the operable windows that are in every room of the house, ceiling fans throughout and the operable window blinds throughout...and nights are always refreshingly cool in the warmest of summertime. During the colder months, the Mountain Star stays warm with 3 radiant heaters, a gas 'fire place' and a very efficient, living room pellet stove.

All outdoor photographs on this site were taken directly from the living room or leisure deck of The Mountain Star.

In addition to all the usual, full home amenities, this resort home offers:

• Spacious, 2nd-story wrap-around deck with picnic table, chairs and chiminea (outdoor fireplace) as well as a fire pan (an alternate form of an outdoor fireplace). Cut and split wood provided.

About Rob Dutton

Hi, my name is 'Flagstaff' Rob Dutton. I am a photographer and musician formerly masquerading as a computer system's analyst. I enjoy meeting people from around the world and have always been an internationalist by nature and upbringing. I am enthusiastic about life and wholeheartedly believe that nature and natural beauty nurture the soul and aid creative and spiritual growth. My enthusiasm for life is directly fueled by my vision and creation of “The Mountain Star”. I designed her and completed construction in 2009. I enlisted a true craftsman to help me build. 'Inspired living' was my guiding principle for the location and design. She was built with lots of love and perseverance, and it excites me to share with others what “The Mountain Star” has to offer.

Why Rob Dutton chose Arizona

The Mountain Star sits in a rare and amazing location. It has the beauty and openness of a remote mountain location yet is only 20 miles from the key regional center and resort town of Flagstaff. It is easily accessed via a well-maintained and beautiful, undivided 2-lane highway (AZ 180) that exists almost exclusively to provide thoroughfare to the Grand Canyon. The Mountain Star’s five acres are part of an area known as Kendrick Park, a 180-acre private land “island” in the middle of the Coconino National Forest (the largest stand of Ponderosa Pine in North America). The home itself is directly backed by the national forest.

What makes this house unique

I believe this home offers the most beautiful and panoramic views available in Northern Arizona. The home’s extensive windowing was designed specifically for the views. The home directly faces the beautiful San Francisco Peaks to the south, Kendrick Mountain to the west, Saddle Mountain to the east and forested hills to the north. Though easily accessed, it is completely ”off-the-grid” and is powered by the sun and the wind. At 2,438 meters (8,000 feet) of elevation, the night sky is glorious.

Great home, great space, very positive experience.

We thoroughly enjoyed our time at Mountain Star and would recommend the property and area to others without any hesitation. Be sure to take advantage of Rob's tips and advice, specifically regarding the Grand Canyon, but also with regard to local restaurants and shopping. The home provided a wonderful getaway and memories that my family will cherish forever. Two thumbs up for Mountain Star!

Fantastic peaceful location

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 5, plus dog, had a great time at Mountain Star. The house is beautiful with all of the amenities, including extra flashlights for lava tube exploring and backpacks for almost every trip we took. And, we took a lot. We went north, south and west. The location was central for canyon rafting, Grand Canyon viewing, Meteor Crater, Flagstaff, the crazy lava landscape near Sunset Crater and more. The home may be off the grid, but it sure was on our grid for a well-earned vacation.

Incredible Stay at Incredible Place! Highly Recommend!

  • 5 of 5

The Mountain Star is one of the most beautiful places our family has ever visited. The scenery is breath-taking, the craftsmanship of the home is incredible, and its location is ideal for a quick trip to the Grand Canyon, Flagstaff, and nearby attractions and hiking trails. Rob was a great host, taking the time to teach us how to use the washer, dryer, skylight, fireplaces, and more. He also had fantastic guides for local food, fun, and even tours of the Grand Canyon. This place has every comfort of home, while still being "off the grid." My only complaint was some of our older family members had trouble with the ladder to the loft, but they ended up staying in the basement bedroom, so crisis averted :) Honestly, from the soaker tub to the wrap-around porch to the whole house music system to the fire pit to the comfortable beds to the loaner backpacks for day hikes, this place has it all. Can't recommend it enough. There were more stars in the sky than us city folk thought was even possible. And our hike to the nearby Red Mountain was a great little adventure. Waking up to the stunning views could never get old. We will definitely be back!

Beautiful home, very well kept, with out of this world scenic views.

  • 5 of 5

Rob's detailed instructions made the stay a snap. Unusual cold weather for early May but we were snug as a bug. And we really enjoyed looking over the local history books and picture books of the Grand Canyon.

Got some excellent hikes in nearby in addition to Canyon trips - Rob's maps made the selection easy.

But - next time - go for Friexenet sparkling wine - only $2 more and way way better although we were so tired at the time we drank it can't say it mattered that much. First time to use a French Press coffee maker - and will now use it exclusively. Thanks Rob. Kitchen could have used a few more widgets - e.g. corn holders -that sort of thing.

Never could find the wind chime - it had to be inside otherwise it would have driven us nuts because it was pretty windy at times.

A beautiful home in a beautiful place. Good choice for us because we wanted to explore both the Grand Canyon and Sedona - half way sort of between both. On the way back home we spent the afternoon in Flagstaff - what a tres cool little town. Good eats. Stopped in at Babbit's store - some excellent history there.

All in all, even though we are lovers of Houston's weather (believe it or not there are strange people like us) we can easily understand why people live in that part of the state. If we hear of anyone who is going to visit this part of the world we would highly recommend they stay at Rob's house.

A Relaxing & Inspiring Mountain Vacation Site

  • 5 of 5

The Mountain Star and owner Rob go above and beyond to make your Arizona vacation one you won't forget.

The clean and well-appointed house has everything you need -- and more! -- and the location are unbeatable for exploring, from the Grand Canyon to Sedona, Flagstaff, Jerome and beyond. The Mountain Star offers numerous places to cozy up to a fire (try the chiminea on the porch), a soaking tub in the master bath to relax, ample pantry supplies for cooking, a great selection of books, music and DVDs (though you don't need to watch TV with the main room's stellar view of Mt. Humphrey), and a wide array of guidebooks, maps and brochures to help navigate the area.

Check-in was the most comprehensive I've ever had, with Rob sharing tips on everything from local hikes to how to use the amazing stereo system. And check-out was a breeze. Rob's communication was excellent and I would highly recommend staying here if you get the chance!
