About Rob Dutton
Hi, my name is 'Flagstaff' Rob Dutton. I am a photographer and musician formerly masquerading as a computer system's analyst. I enjoy meeting people from around the world and have always been an internationalist by nature and upbringing. I am enthusiastic about life and wholeheartedly believe that nature and natural beauty nurture the soul and aid creative and spiritual growth. My enthusiasm for life is directly fueled by my vision and creation of “The Mountain Star”. I designed her and completed construction in 2009. I enlisted a true craftsman to help me build. 'Inspired living' was my guiding principle for the location and design. She was built with lots of love and perseverance, and it excites me to share with others what “The Mountain Star” has to offer.
Why Rob Dutton chose Flagstaff
The Mountain Star sits in a rare and amazing location. It has the beauty and openness of a remote mountain location yet is only 20 miles from the key regional center and resort town of Flagstaff. It is easily accessed via a well-maintained and beautiful, undivided 2-lane highway (AZ 180) that exists almost exclusively to provide thoroughfare to the Grand Canyon. The Mountain Star’s five acres are part of an area known as Kendrick Park, a 180-acre private land “island” in the middle of the Coconino National Forest (the largest stand of Ponderosa Pine in North America). The home itself is directly backed by the national forest.
What makes this House unique
I believe this home offers the most beautiful and panoramic views available in Northern Arizona. The home’s extensive windowing was designed specifically for the views. The home directly faces the beautiful San Francisco Peaks to the south, Kendrick Mountain to the west, Saddle Mountain to the east and forested hills to the north. Though easily accessed, it is completely ”off-the-grid” and is powered by the sun and the wind. At 2,438 meters (8,000 feet) of elevation, the night sky is glorious.

This was an amazing place to stay. Our host was extremely welcoming and had guides for activities all over the area. He makes himself available if you have any questions about your stay. It’s secluded and peaceful. You wake up and have coffee with beautiful mountain sceneries and go to bed under millions of stars. The house comes very well equipped! If there is something you may need on your trip there is an excellent chance it’s there. This is also a great spot to stay if you’re visiting the Grand Canyon!
A perfect base for hiking
Exceptional location and host. There was everything we might need, including tons of documentation on activities. It is very easy to get there from Flagstaff. I wouild gladly stay there again.
Fabulous house with stunning views
This house is wonderful... with an amazing deck with stunning (almost surreal) views of the SanFrancisco peaks. We so appreciated all of his thoughtful touches... binders full of detailed info on activities in the area, flashlights, headlights, backpacks, games, movies, horseshoes, music which pipes into every room including the deck! Perfect get-away! Thanks Rob!
Peaceful and well appointed mountain vacation retreat
You won’t find a better mountain vacation rental home that is convenient to both the Grand Canyon area as well as Sedona. Thoughtful owner has everything you'll Need covered and will provide unique and valuable insider travel tips for all the nearby sites. House has all the amenities of home and is filled with original art and photography. Wrap around deck with fire pit is an amazing place to relax and see the stars (including the Milky Way) you are missing at home. We traveled with 6 and 2 dogs. Plenty of room. Would highly recommend the Mountain Star to couples and families. Excellent!!
Beautiful location to relax
We spent the weekend relaxing with friends, hiking and exploring the area. This house has a great mountain vibe and is in the middle of some wonderful country. Endless view and endless stars at night. I’d go back.
The Dark Side of the Mountain
This place is awesome! If you’re looking to get away from it all and avoid any distractions when it comes to relaxing this is the place... Let Humphreys Peak separate you from it all!
The house is stocked with everything that you’ll need and Rob is personable and really makes the experience better.
Beautiful ponderosa pine and aspen forest easily accessible (unless closed for snow) by well-maintained forest service roads. Beauty all around!
