Flagstaff House Rental Photos and Description

3 Bedroom, 2.5 bathroom Mountain Getaway with spectacular views

The Mountain Star is located in the heart of the Coconino National Forest along the San Francisco Peaks scenic corridor between the mountain town of Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon. This spectacular and convenient location sets The Mountain Star apart from Williams and other rural locations. It can be rented for as little as 2 days, but is ideal for longer stays. See my personal site for lots of handy information at:

The Mountain Star is less than one hour’s drive from the Grand Canyon’s main entrance, and if you don’t want to drive yourself, a local tour company van will pick you up directly from this property. So enjoy the Grand Canyon and then leave the heat and crowds behind to enjoy your very own mountain retreat!

The Mountain Star, located at an elevation of 8,000 feet (2,438 meters) on 5 beautiful acres and backed by National Forest land, offers breath-taking natural beauty, expansive views, direct and easy access to nature, boundless outdoor activities (nature walks and hikes, biking, climbing, etc.) and a spectacular night sky. It is a sanctuary for inspiration, relaxation, reflection and rejuvenation, as well as being perfectly situated for outdoor fun and adventure. Its spacious, 2nd-story wrap-around deck with picnic table, chairs and chiminea (outdoor fireplace) provides for unparalleled enjoyment of the mountain air and scenery.

Experience seeing the sun breach the horizon every morning and evening, moon rises and moon-sets too. When is the last time you let a mountain breeze, the expansive play of earth light and shadow, nature’s panorama and the rich senses of the moment guide your day of thoughts and activity? The Mountain Star offers this to you and your loved ones on a daily basis.

The Mountain Star is completely wind and sun powered (with an automatic propane generator backup system). During the warmer months, the home is 'air conditioned' with refreshing mountain air using the operable windows that are in every room of the house, ceiling fans throughout and the operable window blinds throughout...and nights are always refreshingly cool in the warmest of summertime. During the colder months, the Mountain Star stays warm with 3 radiant heaters, a gas 'fire place' and a very efficient, living room pellet stove.

All outdoor photographs on this site were taken directly from the living room or leisure deck of The Mountain Star.

In addition to all the usual, full home amenities, this resort home offers:

• Spacious, 2nd-story wrap-around deck with picnic table, chairs and chiminea (outdoor fireplace) as well as a fire pan (an alternate form of an outdoor fireplace). Cut and split wood provided.

About Rob Dutton

Hi, my name is 'Flagstaff' Rob Dutton. I am a photographer and musician formerly masquerading as a computer system's analyst. I enjoy meeting people from around the world and have always been an internationalist by nature and upbringing. I am enthusiastic about life and wholeheartedly believe that nature and natural beauty nurture the soul and aid creative and spiritual growth. My enthusiasm for life is directly fueled by my vision and creation of “The Mountain Star”. I designed her and completed construction in 2009. I enlisted a true craftsman to help me build. 'Inspired living' was my guiding principle for the location and design. She was built with lots of love and perseverance, and it excites me to share with others what “The Mountain Star” has to offer.

Why Rob Dutton chose Arizona

The Mountain Star sits in a rare and amazing location. It has the beauty and openness of a remote mountain location yet is only 20 miles from the key regional center and resort town of Flagstaff. It is easily accessed via a well-maintained and beautiful, undivided 2-lane highway (AZ 180) that exists almost exclusively to provide thoroughfare to the Grand Canyon. The Mountain Star’s five acres are part of an area known as Kendrick Park, a 180-acre private land “island” in the middle of the Coconino National Forest (the largest stand of Ponderosa Pine in North America). The home itself is directly backed by the national forest.

What makes this house unique

I believe this home offers the most beautiful and panoramic views available in Northern Arizona. The home’s extensive windowing was designed specifically for the views. The home directly faces the beautiful San Francisco Peaks to the south, Kendrick Mountain to the west, Saddle Mountain to the east and forested hills to the north. Though easily accessed, it is completely ”off-the-grid” and is powered by the sun and the wind. At 2,438 meters (8,000 feet) of elevation, the night sky is glorious.

Spectacular stay and amazing owner

  • 5 of 5

This has been probably the most pleasant experience I've had so far in a shared property. I've stayed here for 3 days with my gf and parents.

Since the very first moment after booking this property what really surprised me is the care and precision Rob had for us. As soon as you book the property you'll receive a long and detailed email that contains all the many feature of this amazing house, directions about how to arrive, suggestions on how to dress, links for the forecast, and more info. I've never seen anything like that and I have to say I wish all the owners had this kind of care. We checked in quite late so Rob couldn't welcome us, nevertheless he left the house lit for us, with music playing and a personalized welcome card. When you enter the house you immediately feel at home. Apart from the beauty of the furniture and appliances, the location is absolutely jaw dropping. The first thing I did was going outside the large patio and enjoyed the brightness of the star. The house is in the middle of a grass field surrounded pretty much by nothing ... so there is no light pollution at all and the starts are very shiny. On the kitchen counter you'll find a booklet written by Rob, that contains all the most interesting hikes in the area, ordered by difficulty and with Rob's personal comments and suggestions. The house is filled with every possible kitchen appliance. It feels like the owner had been living in it till 5 minutes ago. Cause of a problem with my car, we lost the first day of stay. Rob was so kind to reimburse us half day , without us asking any of that. When I'm back to Grand Canyon I'll stay here again for sure and I highly recommend this property. It has been a pleasure to know you Rob ! :)

A beautiful home surrounded by the most beautiful scenery and amazing owner - what could be better?

  • 5 of 5

Everything from the booking process with Rob and information beforehand to arriving in spectacular Mountain Star are 5*. The house is gorgeous and you immediately feel at home with so many outstanding features you rarely get in a rental property. In fact it feels more like you are staying in Rob's home. The views are spectacular at all parts of the day and night and we loved star gazing. Rob is such a warm, interesting host with lots of information to impart relevant to our interests. We loved the shoshone walk and Maverick helicopter trip over the Grand Canyon. As we stayed in hotels for the rest of our holiday, it was fantastic to have all toiletries and sundry items there for us so we didn't have to buy any. We all loved it, even though the ladder to the loft scared me but my son loved it! Mountain Star is a rare gem and one we will definitely be revisiting. Thank you Rob.

Serene, extraordinary home between Flagstaff and Grand Canyon

  • 5 of 5

This home was the perfect base for us to visit Grand Canyon, Sedona, and Flagstaff for four days in early August. The home is about 25-30 minutes north of Flagstaff on a scenic, lightly travelled road through Coconino National Forest. Careful - we almost hit an elk driving the way back from Flagstaff one evening!

Rob loves his home and it shows. It has everything you could need from kitchen gadgets to games to extra blankets to books. We stayed here with our three boys - 12, 11, 8 and they loved staying up in the loft and playing the drum set. There are not TV channels (perfect for a peaceful getaway) but he does have a nice collection of DVDs. We watched one each night - there is something for all ages. The house is off the grid so you are encouraged to conserve energy which is a great habit for everyone. We were there during a particularly rainy week but there is still lots of natural light and we kept the windows open all day to help with the temperature. I heard the generator kick on when we ran the dishwasher.

The bed in the main floor master bedroom is SO COMFY. Seriously, my husband and I meant to figure out what kind of pillow top he used. There is a large bed with full bath in the first floor/garage level, plus two beds in the loft upstairs. Only drawback of loft is no toilet up there and only access is a sturdy ladder, so if someone has to go during the night they have to be awake enough to do the ladder.

GC is about 45 minutes north of the Mountain Star and we did a private tour with All Star Canyon tours with pick up and drop off from Rob's house. Tour was decent but in retrospect we might have just visited GC on our own. The tour guide was able to avoid the rain, though, so in that aspect it was probably helpful to have someone knowledgeable.

The Broken Arrow Pink Jeep tour in Sedona was a highlight for us and the kids and we also all loved the the Lava Cave hike. This hike is literally in a big, pitch-black, chilly, rocky cave. Bring good flashlight (head lamp is ideal), good shoes, a sweatshirt, and move slowly.

There were cows grazing nearby for 3 of the 4 days and we were awoken by mooing one morning, which was charming. The house does get bright early, so if you want to sleep in bring an eye patch. There are no restaurants closer than 25 minutes so stop at the grocery on the way in. We took a short hike in the woods nearby which was fun and scenic - saw a fox, deer, and some cool birds. Plus some old bones

Peace and Tranquility

  • 5 of 5

This was the final leg of my family's vacation. We chose this property hoping to relax before we had to head back to reality. Now I wish we would have spent more time here and less time other places. I am so glad that Rob talked me into 3 nights. Rob was amazing to work with. He will meet with you initially to personally explain how everything works and to answer any questions you may have. I thought this was a nice touch. It made it personal. He provides you with a list of activities all with maps and the hike difficulty levels. This was extremely helpful for us as we had to prioritize our activities. The house was immaculate. It contained everything you need to cook a meal for your family. The bedrooms were comfortable and inviting. My kids enjoyed sitting around the table, playing board games while listening to music which is audible in every room of the house. The best thing was the peace and quiet and the most incredible views of the night sky. Sitting out on the deck at night and staring up at the milky way and all the twinkling stars was truly heavenly. We will definitely be back. Hopefully sooner rather than later. Thanks Rob we had a great time.
