|Minimum Stay||2 - 3 nights|
The Mountain Star is located in the heart of the Coconino National Forest along the San Francisco Peaks scenic corridor between the mountain town of Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon. This spectacular and convenient location sets The Mountain Star apart from Williams and other rural locations. It can be rented for as little as 2 days, but is ideal for longer stays. See my personal site for lots of handy information at: TheMountainStar.com
The Mountain Star is less than one hour’s drive from the Grand Canyon’s main entrance, and if you don’t want to drive yourself, a local tour company van will pick you up directly from this property. So enjoy the Grand Canyon and then leave the heat and crowds behind to enjoy your very own mountain retreat!
The Mountain Star, located at an elevation of 8,000 feet (2,438 meters) on 5 beautiful acres and backed by National Forest land, offers breath-taking natural beauty, expansive views, direct and easy access to nature, boundless outdoor activities (nature walks and hikes, biking, climbing, etc.) and a spectacular night sky. It is a sanctuary for inspiration, relaxation, reflection and rejuvenation, as well as being perfectly situated for outdoor fun and adventure. Its spacious, 2nd-story wrap-around deck with picnic table, chairs and chiminea (outdoor fireplace) provides for unparalleled enjoyment of the mountain air and scenery.
Experience seeing the sun breach the horizon every morning and evening, moon rises and moon-sets too. When is the last time you let a mountain breeze, the expansive play of earth light and shadow, nature’s panorama and the rich senses of the moment guide your day of thoughts and activity? The Mountain Star offers this to you and your loved ones on a daily basis.
The Mountain Star is completely wind and sun powered (with an automatic propane generator backup system). During the warmer months, the home is 'air conditioned' with refreshing mountain air using the operable windows that are in every room of the house, ceiling fans throughout and the operable window blinds throughout...and nights are always refreshingly cool in the warmest of summertime. During the colder months, the Mountain Star stays warm with 3 radiant heaters, a gas 'fire place' and a very efficient, living room pellet stove.
All outdoor photographs on this site were taken directly from the living room or leisure deck of The Mountain Star.

Hi, my name is 'Flagstaff' Rob Dutton. I am a photographer and musician formerly masquerading as a computer system's analyst. I enjoy meeting people from around the world and have always been an internationalist by nature and upbringing. I am enthusiastic about life and wholeheartedly believe that nature and natural beauty nurture the soul and aid creative and spiritual growth. My enthusiasm for life is directly fueled by my vision and creation of “The Mountain Star”. I designed her and completed construction in 2009. I enlisted a true craftsman to help me build. 'Inspired living' was my guiding principle for the location and design. She was built with lots of love and perseverance, and it excites me to share with others what “The Mountain Star” has to offer.
The Mountain Star sits in a rare and amazing location. It has the beauty and openness of a remote mountain location yet is only 20 miles from the key regional center and resort town of Flagstaff. It is easily accessed via a well-maintained and beautiful, undivided 2-lane highway (AZ 180) that exists almost exclusively to provide thoroughfare to the Grand Canyon. The Mountain Star’s five acres are part of an area known as Kendrick Park, a 180-acre private land “island” in the middle of the Coconino National Forest (the largest stand of Ponderosa Pine in North America). The home itself is directly backed by the national forest.
I believe this home offers the most beautiful and panoramic views available in Northern Arizona. The home’s extensive windowing was designed specifically for the views. The home directly faces the beautiful San Francisco Peaks to the south, Kendrick Mountain to the west, Saddle Mountain to the east and forested hills to the north. Though easily accessed, it is completely ”off-the-grid” and is powered by the sun and the wind. At 2,438 meters (8,000 feet) of elevation, the night sky is glorious.
What a great experience! We were looking to stay somewhere with good amenities, remote but not too remote, and with a beautiful view. The Mountain Star exceeded our expectations. Rob is a super host - he takes the time to introduce you to the home as well as give you the inside scoop on where the locals go; remote hikes, good places to eat, scenic routes, etc. Rob is very prompt and helpful. The Mountain Star is probably the 10th VRBO home we have rented and by far the best experience. We will come back when we get a chance.
The Mountain Star is Beautiful - Inside and Out. I may even have taken more pictures inside of the house than outside at the beautiful, breathtaking view. The artwork, the plants, the music in every room made this a fantastic vacation. Clean, comfortable, well-appointed - words can't even express and there isn't anything I would change. My husband and I finished off the 3rd leg of our 25th Anniversary Tour at Rob's masterpiece of a home - and it was a terrific end to our journey. Only regret - wish we'd had another night or two! While there we did see the Grand Canyon, however, I would have been perfectly fine just enjoying the view and his home. Everything you could possibly need is there and Rob is a fantastic host. We really, really hope to be able to return for a longer stay!
We loved the house with beautiful views and the stars at night were amazing. Rob, the owner, gives you plenty of information for things to do in the area. He is readily available to you for any questions. The Grand Canyon Day Tour from Flagstaff was an awesome tour and they pick you up from the house. This tour was recommended from the owner. There are also plenty of hiking trails in the area. If we ever get back to Flagstaff, we would definitely stay at the Mountain Star.
I have rented several houses in various parts of the country through VRBO and this was absolutely, by far, the best experience from start to finish. The experience started with Rob's quick response and abundance of information he provided about the house and the area. On arrival day Rob took the time to not only meet us in person, but also spent extra time with us answering our questions and providing suggestions and things to do, see, and places to eat. He has binders with a multitude of detailed information on everything in the area from day trips, to hikes and drive able trails. We realized immediately Rob is a one of a kind genuine guy that truly takes pride and joy in his guests having the best possible experience at the house and in the area. The house itself is incredible and pictures truly don't do it justice. Situated perfectly with a mountain back drop, and plenty of windows to provide ample views and sun light, the house left us truly amazed. As tired as I was from sightseeing every day, I woke up at 6:30am every morning to watch the sunrise next to the mountain while drinking coffee on the deck. The house is the perfect balance of easy to get to off a main road, but yet completely isolated and private with only a few nicely spaced out houses in the area. It is located centrally to everything you could want to do in the area, close to the Grand Canyon, down town Flagstaff, Sedona, Walnut Canyon, and Sunset crater, all of which we were able to see during our short three night stay. Thanks to Rob's great suggestions and info he provided we had the best experience at each of the places we visited. Our only regret is that we didn't spend the entire week. Each evening we got back to the house in time to make a fire, and sit out and take in the incredible night sky. You can't even imagine seeing so many stars and shooting stars since there is no light pollution whatsoever. This is also by far the best stocked house we have ever rented. Rob has everything from spices, coffee, sweetener, tea, paper towels, dish detergent, soap, extra blankets and towels. When we went to the grocery store all we needed to get was some food, and extra water to bring along on our day trips. It truly felt like home. We also appreciated all of the great artwork, decorations and reading material in the house. We really didn't want to leave and we hope we can go back to the Mountain Star soon. Thanks again Rob for an amazing vacation. God bless!
This has been probably the most pleasant experience I've had so far in a shared property. I've stayed here for 3 days with my gf and parents.
Since the very first moment after booking this property what really surprised me is the care and precision Rob had for us. As soon as you book the property you'll receive a long and detailed email that contains all the many feature of this amazing house, directions about how to arrive, suggestions on how to dress, links for the forecast, and more info. I've never seen anything like that and I have to say I wish all the owners had this kind of care. We checked in quite late so Rob couldn't welcome us, nevertheless he left the house lit for us, with music playing and a personalized welcome card. When you enter the house you immediately feel at home. Apart from the beauty of the furniture and appliances, the location is absolutely jaw dropping. The first thing I did was going outside the large patio and enjoyed the brightness of the star. The house is in the middle of a grass field surrounded pretty much by nothing ... so there is no light pollution at all and the starts are very shiny. On the kitchen counter you'll find a booklet written by Rob, that contains all the most interesting hikes in the area, ordered by difficulty and with Rob's personal comments and suggestions. The house is filled with every possible kitchen appliance. It feels like the owner had been living in it till 5 minutes ago. Cause of a problem with my car, we lost the first day of stay. Rob was so kind to reimburse us half day , without us asking any of that. When I'm back to Grand Canyon I'll stay here again for sure and I highly recommend this property. It has been a pleasure to know you Rob ! :)
Beautiful ponderosa pine and aspen forest easily accessible (unless closed for snow) by well-maintained forest service roads. Beauty all around!
