Norman, a self employed contractor and Lisa, a high school guidance counselor have two children who are in college and two dogs who were adopted by shelters in the Conway area. Since we have owned 'The Betty', we have worked part time at Black Mountain, become involved in Jackson XC Ski touring and have met many good friends and acquaintances. It is easy to feel a part of the close knit village of Jackson and you may feel the same by the time your stay ends. We enjoy taking advantage of all the amenities that are so accessible in the white mountains and especially enjoy hiking and both downhill and cross country skiing. When we are not in Jackson, we spend time on Cape Cod and are avid swimmers and sailors. Our dogs, Lewis, a beagle/bassett and Clark, an australian cattle hound/bassett join us as often as possible on our adventures. Our two children are in college, our son finishing at University of Tampa and our daughter a sophomore at University of Vermont. We try to follow in the footsteps of Bill and Betty Whitney who were so influential in the community and hope to leave our footprint as well. We have reveled in our time in Jackson and the White Mountains and hope that all who stay at 'The Betty' will accumulate great experiences and memories as we have.
Norman MacLean purchased this house in 2005
We have vacationed in Jackson for many years and Norman was a S-kimo. When we had the opportunity to purchase our own home, Jackson was the only option we considered. We have never regretted the investment. We are located at the top of the J-bar on Black Mountain. It is the oldest overhead lift in the country and the slope is also pasture for the horses that are a summer feature of Black Mountain. The Jackson Falls is close by and not only is a beautiful sight but is a popular summer swimming hole. 'The Betty' is a stone's throw from many hiking trails including Doublehead, Diana's Baths, Wildcat Trail and Mt. Washington. For skiers, Jackson is close to Attitash, Wildcat, Cranmore and of course, Black Mountain. For parents, it is close to Storyland as well as a large indoor water park at Red Jacket Resort, miniature golf, ice cream and much more. Shoppers will love the close proximity to North Conway and the many outlets and shops. For those who want a nature experience, Jackson is quaint and quiet, with nature at your doorstep. For those who are looking for retail and entertainment, there are many fine restaurants and pubs that offer an active night life. 'The Betty' can provide something for everyone.
The house is situated in a perfect location and has almost 360 degree views of the mountains. The wrap around porch allows you to spend many hours relaxing in the sun and the screened porch offers shade and protection from the elements. We love that once we settle in, we do not have to move the car. A walk down the hill gets you to the Shovel Handle pub where good food and evening entertainment await. Black Mountain is also at the bottom of the hill and the Fichera family offers horseback rides as well as overnight treks up the mountain. Our daily walks around Whitney Hill Loop provide exercise and fresh air, and maybe even a moose siting! Trek to the bottom of the hill and two golf courses are available as well as a number of restaurants. When you return to 'The Betty' rest on the deck and watch the sun set as the horses graze practically at the front door. There will never be a lack of things to do during your stay in Jackson NH.
My friends and I stayed at the Betty for the second year in a row, this time for 4 nights. The house is fantastic - a large, open kitchen and open concept living and dining room and good sized-bedrooms. This place is perfect for young kids, however, because of 2 key features: a washer and dryer on site, and a large, screened porch. Our boys (two 3-year olds and two 2-year olds) spent HOURS on that porch, playing super heroes and cars. To them, they were outside; to us, they were in an enclosed, shaded, bug-free space with great visibility and one primary entrance and exit that we needed to watch. It's only 5 minutes from Storyland, but separated from the touristy parts of the area, such that it is peaceful and relaxing (once the kids go to bed, that is). The house is spotless, and all linens are provided - and for anyone who's rented houses before, you know that's a HUGE bonus. Cable TV, wifi, and on-demand are all available. I couldn't recommend this property enough. We love the Betty!
My husband and I got marreid at Jackson Falls and rented this house right up the street for the week. It was the perfect size for our family to stay for a few days, and we stayed the rest of the week for our honeymoon. The views are beautiful...our favorite part was sitting on the deck drinking coffee early in the morning, or at sunset. The house was clean, comfortable and everything was well stocked. Everybody loved the house and had a great time!
I want to start out by saying that this house is as equally beautiful as it is disappointing. I've never written a review before but I feel people should know exactly what they're paying for and also maybe this will help solve the problem for the next renter.
The main area of the house is absolutely beautiful with a huge common area as well as big porches for people to visit and mingle in comfort and cleanliness. The two bedrooms (a queen room and an absolutely beautiful king room with a jacuzzi and private porch ) are clean and comfortable.
However, the downstairs was a whole different story. It was so musty that the smell was overwhelming. There was so much moisture in the air that the carpets were literally like walking on a wet spong and even the bedding and furniture were damp. All this was very unfortunate because it would be such a great space to hang out in. It has two bedrooms, a living room, a porch, and a bathroom. Unfortunately my family of four only went down there to sleep and only because we had to. Like I said, it would be such a great space to hang out but not until they replace the carpet and get a dehumidifier.
I mentioned my concern to the owners and there response was " sorry, maybe we'll put in a small AC unit". That will definitely NOT solve the problem! I feel like we paid for a "whole" house but only got to use half of it.
I would recommend this house only if you can all fit upstairs. It really is a beautiful main level with everything you would need to have a great time, it's just unfortunate that you really can't be downstairs in the summer months due to the extreme mustiness.
We stayed here over Labor Day weekend and the house was perfect! Everything was clean, the kitchen and bathrooms were well stocked with everything we needed. Wrap around porch was a great place to enjoy the weather and the ceiling to floor windows made the great room bright and relaxing. There was plenty of room for the 2 families that stayed--4 adults and 3 children. Rooms in the basement were a great area for the kids to hang out and have their own space. The location is convienient to lots of tourist areas, but secluded enough to feel away from it all. The view from the house is beautiful! We fit in a hike to Diana's Bath and a day on the Saco river without having to drive too far. The pictures actually don't do the house justice! Maybe add some updated photos! Thanks so much for letting us use your home! Thomas W. and Family
We stayed at The Betty for the weekend of our neice's wedding held at Whitney's Inn. The Betty overlooks the Inn and was the perfect place to be close to the wedding festivities yet enjoy a little quiet time as well. The home was clean, beds were comfortable and there was plenty of room for our extended family (kids and grandkids) to spread out. We loved the large screen porch! While we were here we had trip to Storyland and some splishing and splashing at Jackson Falls, both just a few minutes away. We only wish we could have stayed longer.
we were more than impressed with not just the size of this home but the unique character and impeccable cleanliness.
The great room is amazing! our familiy was very comfortable for the 3 nights we stayed. We were able to have separate spaces for everyone to be able to have some down time and for the kids to have plenty of space to stretch out and relax. It was also large enough for us to host a family dinner to kick off my sister's wedding weekend. Would definitely stay here again if I ever have another opportunity to vacation in the white mountains
The house has a full deck along the front a sceened porch along the side, with a direct access from the master bedroom
