Craig and I would love to have you come and visit us at our brownstone that is nestled on a quiet tree lined street in the village of Harlem. The apartment is a full floor in a privately owned brownstone.
Our newly renovated vacation and short-term rental is a spacious and private apartment-style suite, complete with a separate entry, full kitchen for cooking, living room, dining area and private bath, all conveniently located in the heart of historic Harlem. We employed the services of a professional interior decorator so that we could offer you the very best. Each apartment includes flat screen televisions, cable (with all the premium cable channels) and internet service and are completely air conditioned. This apartment includes a queen size bed with a pull out sofa in the living room that converts to a double bed.
We’re steps from all major mass transit lines (the nearest subway is three blocks away), some of the city’s best restaurants, entertainment and cultural attractions including Sylvia’s restaurant, the Red Rooster the Apollo Theater, the Studio Museum of Harlem and many more.
Whether it’s for a weekend getaway or a longer vacation stay, our suites are designed with your comfort in mind. But don’t take our word for it, take a look around here, or feel free to drop us a line with your questions. Come see what’s Behind the Red Door!
Craig and I are both New Yorkers, he born on Long Island and I in Brooklyn and have been Harlem residents for over 30 years. We live 6 blocks from the apartment you will be staying in and are eager to make your stay an enjoyable one.
Diane Shepherd purchased this apartment in 1985
Every guest who has stayed with us has commented on either the beauty of the renovation, the peacefulness of the apartment, the convenience of the location or the abundance of nearby stores and services. It is really a great place to stay
My husband and I travel to NYC annually - we LOVE the city! Each time, we try to stay in a different area to experience the culture. Our stay in Harlem did not disappoint. Diane was extremely communicative, provided precise directions, and met us immediately upon our arrival. The apartment is on the second floor of a beautiful, aged brownstone. The apartment is beautifully appointed with all the necessary (and some extra!) amenities. The apartment was clean with fresh linens upon our arrival. We were very comfortable during our stay. The tree lined street was not noisy and we were able to relax well into the morning as we desired. The apartment is located 3 blocks from the nearest subway station and is within walking distance of many historical venues in Harlem. We enjoyed several meals in the area - eating at The Corner restaurant, the Lennox Sapphire, and Sylvia's. We both highly recommend Sylvia's - the service was outstanding and there are not words to describe the food! I would highly recommend the apartment - convenient location, great price, fantastic customer service! There was not a time where we did not feel comfortable or safe. Thank you, Diane, for sharing your apartment with us!
My husband and I stayed at one of Diane's apartment for one week.
We took the M60 bus from LaGuardia airport when we arrived, and with 9am rush hour traffic it took about an hour to reach the apartment. We purchased a weekly MTA pass that we used for the subways and buses. We used Uber when departing since our flight was early.
The apartment was very clean. There are 2 window AC units to cool the apartment quickly. Plenty of towels and bed linens are provided. Kitchen utensils, glasses, and plates are also provided. We watched tv a couple of times when we took a break before planned events.
The Wi-Fi signal was a little weak in the bedroom, but that's the only somewhat negative comment about this apartment.
The location is near 2 subway stations about a 5-10 minute walk from the apartment, and you could quickly get to most places in Manhattan within 10-30 minutes depending on if express trains were running and how far south you were headed. At no point during our stay did we feel unsafe at any location in the city, even coming back to the apartment after 10pm a few times.
If you are a very light sleeper like I am, sometimes ear plugs weren't quite enough with all the noise from a large city, but my husband slept through all the noise.
Diane's apartment is in a great location an easy walk between two metro stations. We had no trouble getting quickly to Midtown or anywhere else we wanted. It is a short walk to many excellent restaurants also. We stayed on the second floor and I recommend you ask for the top floor so as not to hear the people stomping around above you. The second floor bedroom is on the street side of the apartment so you get some street noise. It was nice to have heavy enough curtains to block out the morning light. The apartment is big enough to have a couple in the living room on the futon if you don't mind sharing the small bathroom. The apartment was well appointed and very clean. The mattress was a little too firm for my wife and I (we both sleep on our sides).
We had a girls getaway this weekend and loved Diane's place. I would definitely recommend it. It was very comfortable for the 4 of us. Diane met me personally and showed me how to use the futon. Yes, it was different from most, but my girls (19 and 21) indicated it was comfortable. We were there for such a short time we didn't actually use the kitchen, so I can't comment there. The neighborhood was fun and very walkable. Access to multiple subway lines was a big plus.
I found Diane kind, informative and responsive. I truly appreciated how she made me feel welcome. It had been nearly 10 years since my last trip to Harlem. This is certainly where I'd like to stay the next time I come.
I liked everything about the apartment...except for the futon/day bed that was in the living room. The condition of that piece of furniture was substandard in appearance and function. Diane was kind enough to provide instructions (approximately 10 bullet points) on how to set it up but I still couldn't figure it out. It needs to be replaced. Short of that I'd recommend you book your next Harlem stay "Behind the Red Door"
I can't say enough about this property, or the owners. When we arrived we were shown the apartment and also given very descriptive instructions about how to get around and how to get to the nearest subway. There is really nothing we needed, because the owners have thought of everything. This was much better than staying at a hotel. The apartment is on a quiet street in Harlem, everyone in the neighborhood seems very nice. We would be on the subway till late at night and then walk the couple blocks back to the apartment. Never once did we feel uncomfortable or threatened in any way. We did manage to get a parking ticket, but that was my fault for not reading the street signs! I have never slept so well when being away from home as I did in this apartment. Thank you so much for a wonderful stay, and we hope to be back that way again.
We are 3 blocks from the subway and 15 minutes from midtown Manhattan. Restaurants, grocery stores, drug stores, laundromats are all within a 3 block radius. We are one block from Sylvia's, two blocks from the Red Rooster and a host of other restaurants. It is one of the best locations in Harlem or in all of New York City.
