About Steve and Monika

We're a couple of accountants with two little girls that enjoy getting away from our busy urban life. We've searched for the perfect place for quite a while and finally found it!

Steve and Monika purchased this cottage in 2013

Why Steve and Monika chose Mount Hood

This area is beautiful and as interesting in the summer as it is in the winter months. We wanted a place that's a short drive from where we live. Being an hour away from Portland this drive is a breeze whether you're getting here Friday evening or heading straight to work on Monday morning. After a pretty long search we knew right away that this cabin/cottage was different from anything else that we had looked at.

What makes this cottage unique

The location is amazing, right on the river, with plenty of space around the house for kids to play. Easy to access from the road, but private enough. The house feels fresh and bright, not like some of the dark and moist cabins we looked at during our search.

Remote but close to all Mt. Hood has to offer!

  • 4 of 5

The property was clean and comfy. Our family of four enjoyed hanging out at the cabin, exploring the river right out back, and many of the local trails around Mt. Hood. The yard with the swings was a huge hit with the kids and we enjoyed sitting by the river reading while the kids played. The Zigzag Ranger Station is five minutes from the cabin and the rangers were awesome in suggesting hikes for our kids ages. The only cons are that the house doesn't really have a shower which was ok for the kids, but not ideal for the grownups. Also the fridge is a mini fridge so it was hard to fit our groceries. We made both work and the location and cabin itself were both fantastic. Thank you for sharing your home with us!

Great property, clean and well maintained

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for 3 nights and had a great time in the area. We did not arrive until after dark but the cabin was easy to find with the directions that were provided to us. The cabin is in a great location with plenty to do within easy driving distance. We spent most of our days hiking and exploring the surrounding area and returned to the cabin each day around 5 or 6. We hiked to Ramona Falls our first day. Loved the hike but the bridge was out that requires you to cross the Sandy river. It is a challenge to find a safe place to cross but well worth the hike. We were able to cross by walking across a fallen tree but if you have smaller children this may not be the hike for you. Ramona Falls is beautifu! Our 2nd day we drove up to the Government Camp area and Timberline Lodge and ski area; nice views near the top of Mt. Hood. We also hiked to Mirror Lake which was a nice hike. Other people looked like they were enjoying their swim in mirror lake but we opted to stay dry. We then continued on the trail up to the Tom, Dick and Harry overlook which provided a spectacular 360 degree panoramic view of the area. We could see Mt. St. Helens, Mt Rainier, Mt. Adams and Mt. Jefferson all in the distance. We were lucky to have such a clear day for this hike. It was nice to have a great cabin to return to after our daytime excursions. The kitchen had everything we needed to prepare meals in addition to the popcorn that was provided. Plenty of space to relax both inside and outside overlooking the river. I would definitely recommend this place to any one.

Stunning views, everlasting memories.

  • 5 of 5

This was such a beautiful location - a getaway from the city and was just what we were looking for to celebrate the second part of our honeymoon in OR. :) Very clean, cozy, decor was perfect, views were amazing. There is no shower, but the claw tub was very nice and a reminder to slow down and relax. We had the TV on, yet I spent more time just staring out the large windows at the rushing river. Great birdwatching and if we had fishing equipment it would have been fun. :) Groceries, restaurants and gas stations within 5 miles. Will definitely plan another stay here and let all my friends and family in on this secret little gem in the mountains.

Great Cabin on the Sandy River!

  • 5 of 5

We had such a great time relaxing at the Sandy River Cabin! Steve and Monika were easy to work with and they have put a lot of thought into the cabin. I feel the best rentals are the ones where you can tell the owners spend time there too (not just an investment house). The kids toys and high chair were great to have around for our 2 year old. We appreciated they had full cable with channels like Disney Jr. to keep him entertained in between our daily outings to Portland and the surrounding areas. Unfortunately it rained most of the time we were there, but the covered picnic table provided an excellent place for our group of 5 to hang out while we watched the river slowly increase its flow from all the precipitation. We even managed to have camp fires on 2 of our nights when the rain lightened up to a cool mist. They have an excellent spot on the river with an access ramp to take you down to the sandy beach. The master bed was very comfortable and the kitchen was spacious to cook meals in. You will love hanging out in this place because the views are awesome.

A few things to note for future renters: The fridge is small, but luckily we had a cooler with us. We kept food in the fridge and our drinks in the cooler out on the front deck. This made it easy to go fetch a new beer and not have to kick off wet shoes each time to go inside. Something you may want to do if you have a full group like we did. I also suggest bringing your own firewood if you want camp fires. They had a little there, but I prefer to bring my own so I know what I'm working with. Pick up a couple bundles at the Safeway in Sandy on the way out to the cabin and you'll be set for a weekend. The bathing experience was a little interesting, but things like that just add to the uniqueness of the visit in my opinion. I'm not much of a bath person, so I just sat in the tub while I showered with the handheld sprayer attachment. There is no shower curtain, so it takes a little skill to not spray water out of the tub while washing shampoo out of your hair. I do not believe one would be able to stand and shower without getting water everywhere. It was no worries to us, but something to be aware of.

All things considered, the place was great and we will surely rent there again when we come back to explore Mt. Hood. It was hiding in the clouds the whole time and all the lifts were closed due to winds. The Magic Mile will have to wait until next time!! :-)

A spectacular experience...perfect cabin in a perfect spot

  • 5 of 5

The cabin was a phenomenal experience...I just wish I could share it with more of my friends and family. The cabin is modern but rustic but in the prime location , right on the river. The views and sounds are only something that you can experience by staying here.

Everything was impeccable about this property and I can't wait to make my next reservation here!

Beautiful view and very well kept cabin.

  • 4 of 5

A very nice cabin right on the river. Property is very well kept and is just like the pictures on the HomeAway website. Would go back here again. Same minor complaints as others, small refrigerator and no shower curtain around the bath tub. Everything else is great and we did not feel uneasy in the neighborhood. Found that it was easier to get to the main highway 26 by turning left from the cabin on East Mountain Air Drive and them left on Lataurelle Ave and you will come right out at the highway.
