About Marion Thompson

We have lived in this community since the early 1970s. Over those many decades we have built two homes and raised two children. In the early years John was a helper on a lobster fishing boat and I worked at the Bell Museum. In the 1980s we opened Leather Works and this allowed John to better develop and market his leather working skills and meant I could work closer to home while we raised our two daughters. John loves gardening, telemark skiing, biking to the local cafe and volunteering as a Medical First Responder/Fire Fighter. I love walking, snowshoeing, reading, dvd watching and cooking. We both like meeting new people, visiting old friends and living in this great community.

Marion Thompson purchased this cottage in 1973

Why Marion Thompson chose Victoria, Subd. A

We had been travelling for a number of years and living out of knapsacks. We wanted a place where we could recharge our batteries and this community seemed the perfect place. It's been 40 years and we're still recharging.

What makes this cottage unique

In our backyard we have access to The French River Watershed Protected Area, one of the largest wilderness areas in Nova Scotia. In our front yard we have the world famous, scenic Cabot Trail. The Atlantic Ocean is an 8 minute walk away from our front door.

Perfect spot to discover Cape Breton's charms

  • 5 of 5

We just spent 4 lovely weeks at Fieldstone Garden. The guest home was a perfect "home away from home" for my husband and myself and our small dog. You won't find more thoughtful people on the planet than the owners, Marion and John, who were always on hand with helpful suggestions, answers to our questions, or offerings from their bountiful garden. We loved the beauty, the culture and the people of Cape Breton, and hope to return someday soon.

This was a wonderful stay for us. In a great spot for sight seeing and other activities. The house was so comfortable, clean, containing everything you would need (and more) for an excellent stay. The garden and surroundings were lovely a perfect quiet spot. Marion & John provided us with lots of information and were such a lovely friendly couple. We would definitely recommend to all our friends.

Wonderful place to relax and explore Cape Breton!

  • 5 of 5

Field Stone Garden is a wonderful place to relax and explore Cape Breton! Marion and John are wonderful hosts making everyone feel at home and providing great tips to explore the area. The cottage is beautiful and very quiet and peaceful. Thanks to its central location it is a good starting point to explore the Cabot Trail, Cape Breton Highlands National Park but also the Southern end of the island. Our week at Field Stone Garden went by way too fast!

Its convenient location on The Cabot Trail, its outstanding owners, and its interior and its porch filled with warm, wonderful touches make this apartment "simply superb". Fieldstone is the essence of a five star rental. We hope to return.

Lovely cottage, lovely hosts

  • 5 of 5

Cape Breton is one of those special places and this cottage is the perfect place to enjoy it. The cottage was lovely, spacious and spotless. Marion and John are wonderful hosts and a wealth of information regarding what is going on locally. We enjoyed the nearby parks, beaches, the seafood and we highly recommend the Puffin boat tour. The tiny humming birds that visit the cottage’s window drinking trough all day are a special treat. We highly recommend this property.

We have wilderness in the backyard & the ocean is a 10 minute walk away. When we are not in the garden we are beach combing, climbing the trails behind our home, bird watching, cycling to the Clucking Hen Cafe, and taking in as much of the active social life as we can. Cooking at home is fun, but in the summer we have lots of options for eating out. The nearby beach being the favourite. We have twice weekly acoustic music evenings, the Cabot Trail Writers' Festival, Celtic Colours Music Festival and numerous smaller events happening throughout the year, but particularly between June and October.
