About Marion Thompson

We have lived in this community since the early 1970s. Over those many decades we have built two homes and raised two children. In the early years John was a helper on a lobster fishing boat and I worked at the Bell Museum. In the 1980s we opened Leather Works and this allowed John to better develop and market his leather working skills and meant I could work closer to home while we raised our two daughters. John loves gardening, telemark skiing, biking to the local cafe and volunteering as a Medical First Responder/Fire Fighter. I love walking, snowshoeing, reading, dvd watching and cooking. We both like meeting new people, visiting old friends and living in this great community.

Marion Thompson purchased this cottage in 1973

Why Marion Thompson chose Nova Scotia

We had been travelling for a number of years and living out of knapsacks. We wanted a place where we could recharge our batteries and this community seemed the perfect place. It's been 40 years and we're still recharging.

What makes this cottage unique

In our backyard we have access to The French River Watershed Protected Area, one of the largest wilderness areas in Nova Scotia. In our front yard we have the world famous, scenic Cabot Trail. The Atlantic Ocean is an 8 minute walk away from our front door.

Outstanding!

  • 5 of 5

Our accommodations in the guest house at Field Stone Garden were wonderful. Really just perfectly suited for our needs during our stay on Cape Breton Island. Our hosts, Marion and John, were very accommodating and always helpful. Our stay could not have been better.

Perfect lodging for our Honeymoon

  • 5 of 5

We had a beautiful stay at Field Stone, the property was beautiful and Ms. Marion was awesome. It felt like we were at home. Great accommodations with more than enough space to feel comfortable. We really enjoyed our stay and would recommend to anyone who wants to visit Cape Brenton for a get away.

If I could give them six stars, I would. Wouldn't change anything. Perfect!

A complete delight from the ribboned slippers to the fabulous hosts. We felt like pampered guests. Great recommendations for food, hikes and of course, Cape Breton musicians. Love the place; the garden; the setting. Only regret is it's so far from Seattle so we can't just come anytime we want to.

Wonderful Hosts

  • 5 of 5

'The accomdations are clean and confortable with lots of windows overlooking lovely gardens. The upstairs bedroom is enormous with lots of storage space and a very comfortable bed. There is a lovely little screened in porch with two rocking chairs. Marion and John are wonderful. Marion picked up wine and mussels for us and she even taught me how to cook them and shared herbs out of her garden. They are a living guidebook to the best local hikes, restaurants, stores, drives etc. They provided us with lots of wonderful information that you won't find in store bought guides. They are absolutely delightful just to visit with as well. I only wish we had found out they like to play Quiddler before our last day.

Owner's Response: Okay you have to come back and we'll choose our dictionary and play Quiddler. We loved having you with us and I hope we'll see you again. All the best to both of you.

Nature and beauty and peace and quiet

  • 5 of 5

Marion and John were the perfect hosts with the perfect guest house! So much to do with so little time!! So much beauty, hiking, history and hopes of a moose sighting (saw one large female on a hike!). The guest house was roomy with lots of windows to look at the lovely gardens and hillside.

Fresh cut flowers welcomed us to our ground level sitting area, kitchen and bath. The roomy upstairs had comfy bed, plenty of pillows and darkening shades and drapes. The talents of local artists hung from the walls and decorated the antique furnishings. Marion cut fresh herbs from their garden for us, as well as fresh fiddle heads! The location is great for day trips around the Cabot Trail, or time could be spent looking at and/or reading the many wonderful books while sitting on a rocking chair on the screened in porch listening to the frogs! Many of the books were about the Cabot Trail and local history, as well as a book put together on all the local attractions including maps and directions! I hope someday we will be able to stay at the guest house again, enjoying the friendship of Marion, John and energetic, sweet Culan (their rescue black lab mix). Thank you, for sharing your home!

We have wilderness in the backyard & the ocean is a 10 minute walk away. When we are not in the garden we are beach combing, climbing the trails behind our home, bird watching, cycling to the Clucking Hen Cafe, and taking in as much of the active social life as we can. Cooking at home is fun, but in the summer we have lots of options for eating out. The nearby beach being the favourite. We have twice weekly acoustic music evenings, the Cabot Trail Writers' Festival, Celtic Colours Music Festival and numerous smaller events happening throughout the year, but particularly between June and October.
