Downstairs is the 3 piece bathroom, with hair dryer, shampoo, etc., kitchenette, dining table, and sofa bed. All linens, dishes, tea, coffee, etc are supplied. About Marion Thompson

We have lived in this community since the early 1970s. Over those many decades we have built two homes and raised two children. In the early years John was a helper on a lobster fishing boat and I worked at the Bell Museum. In the 1980s we opened Leather Works and this allowed John to better develop and market his leather working skills and meant I could work closer to home while we raised our two daughters. John loves gardening, telemark skiing, biking to the local cafe and volunteering as a Medical First Responder/Fire Fighter. I love walking, snowshoeing, reading, dvd watching and cooking. We both like meeting new people, visiting old friends and living in this great community.

Marion Thompson purchased this cottage in 1973

Why Marion Thompson chose Cape Breton Island

We had been travelling for a number of years and living out of knapsacks. We wanted a place where we could recharge our batteries and this community seemed the perfect place. It's been 40 years and we're still recharging.

What makes this cottage unique

In our backyard we have access to The French River Watershed Protected Area, one of the largest wilderness areas in Nova Scotia. In our front yard we have the world famous, scenic Cabot Trail. The Atlantic Ocean is an 8 minute walk away from our front door.

Fieldstone Garden is a comfortable, spacious, and well provisioned cottage. We can’t say enough wonderful things about the cottage and our hosts, Marion and John. Marion’s helpful touring suggestions enhanced each day’s agenda. From this location we toured Baddeck, Fortress Louisbourg and parts of the Cabot Trail. We were sad to leave after our stay, but we now have many happy memories.

We enjoyed our two night stay at the Fieldstone Garden. Our hosts were most friendly and accommodating and full of information for our excursion on the Cabot Trail. The cottage was comfortable, clean and had most everything you needed and it was nice to feel like part of the neighbourhood as opposed to staying in a busier area.

A great place to stay

  • 5 of 5

This is a lovely and comfortable cottage to vacation in. It is airy, clean, comfortable and pleasant to be in. I can't say enough about

the hosts. They are warm, kind and very informative about the local community and its rich cultural life.

Staying at Fieldstone Garden was the high point of our trip to Cape Breton.

Great choice for a Cape Breton getaway

  • 5 of 5

I can't recommend this property highly enough. Everything in the listing is accurate. The guest retreat is spacious, very clean, and the hosts are wonderful. Marion has thought of everything and is very attentive and helpful. They know everyone and are great resources as well as hosts. The location is great as you are only 40 minutes from Baddeck (to the South) and Ingonish (to the North). 15-20 minutes from North River Kayak which is a must-do if you are there. Located in great little community, very close to two good eating options (Simply Pizza and The Clucking Hen). We absolutely loved our three days in Cape Breton, the only regret being that we didn't schedule a whole week or, ideally, two. So much to do and see. Our recommendation is plan for at least a week, and stay in FieldStone Garden if you can. We'll be back!

My husband, our 1 1/2 yo daughter, and I had a terrific stay at FieldStone Garden. The listing description is completely accurate; the property was very clean and tidy, well-maintained, and there was clear attention to detail and comfort (e.g. toiletries, extra blankets, kitchen supplies). The cottage is next to the host's home but is completely private, with a separate entrance. It sits on a beautiful lot backing right into the wilderness - a perfect getaway for us, since we were looking to rid ourselves of the city buzz and immerse into nature's tranquility. The location was excellent for us - within easy and quick drive of cross-country ski trails, snowshoe trails, and Smokey (volunteer-run ski hill).

Most importantly - the hosts are absolutely wonderful. Prior to our arrival, they not only promptly answered all of our questions but also provided us with helpful guidance on activities and events taking place during our planned stay (community events, restaurant hours (given it was off-season), snowshoe hikes, etc). During our stay, they were accessible and readily available. They know the area very well, and suggested outings that were a perfect fit for what we were looking to do. We felt very welcome - like we were visiting family.

This spot is a great fit for the winter sport enthusiast, the person looking to quietly unwind and relax, or both :)

We will certainly return.

We would go back in a minute!

What can we add to the previous reviews? The place is spacious. The hummingbirds and property (garden) are beautiful. The lobsters that John picked up were fresh off the boat. The mussels that Marion arranged to be delivered were the best ever. "Your wish is our command" is the motto of Marion and John! While in CBI you need not Google. Just ask Marion and John. Highly recommended!

We have wilderness in the backyard & the ocean is a 10 minute walk away. When we are not in the garden we are beach combing, climbing the trails behind our home, bird watching, cycling to the Clucking Hen Cafe, and taking in as much of the active social life as we can. Cooking at home is fun, but in the summer we have lots of options for eating out. The nearby beach being the favourite. We have twice weekly acoustic music evenings, the Cabot Trail Writers' Festival, Celtic Colours Music Festival and numerous smaller events happening throughout the year, but particularly between June and October.
