Watch the waves crash on the rocks just outside your door from the tower of a fantasy house that melds elements of a castle with quaint Victorian charm.
This historic home built in 1883, sits just steps from Monterey Bay and a walking/bicycling trail that meanders for 15 miles along the coastline. You're less than a 10 minute walk along this trail to Cannery Row and the aquarium.
The exterior of this whimsical 2356 square feet, 4-bedroom, 2-bath home, called “Captain's Castle,” comes complete with gargoyles, gables and stained glass windows. The predominant feature is a square tower that offers a bird's-eye view of all the comings and goings on the bay.
As you open the front door to the entry, with its coved ceiling and built-in cabinetry with insets of royal blue, topaz and wine that match the stained-glass panels framing virtually every window in the house, you will feel you are in your own seaside inn. The entry leads to a cozy Victorian-style living room with a high paneled ceiling, brass-faced gas fireplace and an antique chandelier. The elegant furnishings include an ivory brocade sofa, 2 azure velvet chairs and patterned area rug. Both rooms look out to the bay. The 1st story and most of the 2nd have hardwood floors.
Upon your arrival you will be greeted with complementary wine and cheese, passes to the renown Spa on the Plaza in downtown Monterey, tickets for a wine tasting at Scheid Vineyards’ tasting room in downtown Carmel-by-the-Sea and a basket of local information. An assigned concierge vacation house manager is available to assist you during your stay. We have also provided spa amenities in the bathrooms, spa robes and beach gear.
Enjoy movies in a spacious family room with hardwood wainscoting, sectional sofa, ottoman and a 50” flat-screen TV. An open counter with stools connects the family room to the updated kitchen with its beautiful wood cabinets and slate gray Corian counter-tops. Everything you could desire for preparing and serving fabulous gourmet meals is available, including a Viking stainless steel gas range, Sub Zero side-by-side refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave and beautiful dishes and table linens.
Enjoy coffee or casual meals at a round table for 4 in a sunroom facing the fenced-in back patio or take your food outdoors to the wrought-iron pergola equipped with 2 comfortable chairs, a metal table and chairs and umbrella. Well-behaved dogs are welcome.
More formal meals can be served in a paneled dining room with a vaulted ceiling and a bay window. A wooden Queen Anne table and upholstered chairs can seat up to 8.
A full bathroom on this floor has a claw-foot bathtub/shower with a surround curtain. An adjoining laundry room has a stacking washer/dryer.
The 2nd floor has 4 bedrooms. The first – with a king bed - has windows that look to a park and the bay. A 2nd bedroom, overlooking the backyard, has a king bed, an antique bedside table and a rocking chair. A 3rd smaller bedroom, with ocean vistas, has a queen bed. Bask in ocean views from the king bed in the master bedroom. All beds feature luxury linens.
A large white-tiled bathroom with plum accents features a deep claw-foot tub and a separate step-in basin shower with water pipes exposed as in days of yore.
The most fun is the 3rd-floor tower with its panoramic views of the bay during the day and the twinkling lights of adjacent cities at night. Two couches, chairs and a round coffee table provide the perfect setting for morning coffee or happy hour.
Children under 13 must be supervised at all times in this room due to the 3rd story windows that open out. The tower is not a sleeping area.
Garage and driveway can park up to 3 cars.

We have stayed in several houses in Pacific Grove and the Captain's Castle is by far the best yet! We all appreciated the view and location that the Castle provided in the tower. It was truly a special experience and we can not wait to return. Thank you for sharing this exceptional place with us.
Our family loved the Castle! It was in a great location, we loved our walks on the path,. We walked to the aquarium, restaurants and the beach. The house was clean and there was plenty of space for the 8 of us. We enjoyed using the barbecue and eating on the lovely patio. We would definitely recommend!
This house is so charming and unique. The location is perfect. Great views from the castle and close to so many things. The views from the tower is a wonderful place to watch the sun rise and set. We also loved being able to walk right out to ocean and see the sea lions. The castle rooms are all very large and comfortable. I would highly recommend this home.
