Watch the waves crash on the rocks just outside your door from the tower of a fantasy house that melds elements of a castle with quaint Victorian charm.
This historic home built in 1883, sits just steps from Monterey Bay and a walking/bicycling trail that meanders for 15 miles along the coastline. You're less than a 10 minute walk along this trail to Cannery Row and the aquarium.
The exterior of this whimsical 2356 square feet, 4-bedroom, 2-bath home, called “Captain's Castle,” comes complete with gargoyles, gables and stained glass windows. The predominant feature is a square tower that offers a bird's-eye view of all the comings and goings on the bay.
As you open the front door to the entry, with its coved ceiling and built-in cabinetry with insets of royal blue, topaz and wine that match the stained-glass panels framing virtually every window in the house, you will feel you are in your own seaside inn. The entry leads to a cozy Victorian-style living room with a high paneled ceiling, brass-faced gas fireplace and an antique chandelier. The elegant furnishings include an ivory brocade sofa, 2 azure velvet chairs and patterned area rug. Both rooms look out to the bay. The 1st story and most of the 2nd have hardwood floors.
Upon your arrival you will be greeted with complementary wine and cheese, tickets for a wine tasting at Scheid Vineyards’ tasting room in downtown Carmel-by-the-Sea and a basket of local information. An assigned concierge vacation house manager is available to assist you during your stay. We have also provided spa amenities in the bathrooms, spa robes and beach gear.
Enjoy movies in a spacious family room with hardwood wainscoting, sectional sofa, ottoman and a 50” flat-screen TV. An open counter with stools connects the family room to the updated kitchen with its beautiful wood cabinets and slate gray Corian counter-tops. Everything you could desire for preparing and serving fabulous gourmet meals is available, including a Viking stainless steel gas range, Sub Zero side-by-side refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave and beautiful dishes and table linens.
Enjoy coffee or casual meals at a round table for 4 in a sunroom facing the fenced-in back patio or take your food outdoors to the wrought-iron pergola equipped with 2 comfortable chairs, a metal table and chairs and umbrella. Well-behaved dogs are welcome.
More formal meals can be served in a paneled dining room with a vaulted ceiling and a bay window. A wooden Queen Anne table and upholstered chairs can seat up to 8.
A full bathroom on this floor has a claw-foot bathtub/shower with a surround curtain. An adjoining laundry room has a stacking washer/dryer.
The 2nd floor has 4 bedrooms. The first – with a king bed - has windows that look to a park and the bay. A 2nd bedroom, overlooking the backyard, has a king bed, an antique bedside table and a rocking chair. A 3rd smaller bedroom, with ocean vistas, has a queen bed. Bask in ocean views from the king bed in the master bedroom.
A large white-tiled bathroom features a deep claw-foot tub and a separate step-in basin shower with water pipes exposed as in days of yore.
The most fun is the 3rd-floor tower with its panoramic views of the bay during the day and the twinkling lights of adjacent cities at night. Two couches, chairs and a round coffee table provide the perfect setting for morning coffee or happy hour.
Children under 13 must be supervised at all times in this room due to the 3rd story windows that open out. The tower is not a sleeping area.
Garage and driveway can park up to 3 cars.

Great Location, Great Charm, Slightly Challenging
Overall we really enjoyed this house. The location is amazing, just across the walking path between Lover's Point and the Aquarium. Both are easy walking distance, even for the grandparents with a little less mobility.
The décor of the house is fantastic. So many elements have been maintained in antique fashion. All the electrically switches are decades old. The kitchen has been nicely updated to modern standards with a Viking stove and Subzero fridge.
The had two minor challenges. The first was the stairs. They are true to the period, by which I mean they are steeper and narrower than what would be built today. We have stayed in a couple houses of this time period and they are all the same. The stairs were not an issue for the parents and kids in our party. The grandparents on the other hand found them just a bit challenging. Two of the grandparents have bad knees and just had to take their time, but could get up in to the tower to experience the amazing sunsets. The other issue is the showers. The upstairs shower has a pull down chain to run the water, so you have to hold it down the entire time you want the water to run. Stop to put on shampoo and the water does too. The downstairs shower does not have this issue, but with seven in our party we needed to use both showers.
I would stay here again on future visits, but I would also consider the other options in the area and look around before booking.
The location is perfect: a short walk to the aquarium, an invigorating hike to Asilomar Beach. The house is comfortable and clean. The views are fantastic. We enjoyed our stay immensely and look forward to returning when we can stay longer.
Unique Pacific Grove Rental
This house is perfect for a group. It's within walking distance to Cannery Row and has great ocean views.
First the pros:
Great location with awesome water views from the "tower"
Clean and can easily accomodate up to four couples.
Well stocked kitchen with lots of utensils, pots & pans, coffee makers etc.
Has a garage and driveway that has space for 3 vehicles.
Lots of steep stairs so not a good choice for those with mobility issues.
The upstairs shower is vintage but is basically useless for most folks. You have to pull a chain to get the shower to flow. It seems time for an update.
The cleaning fee seems a bit steep $400 for a 2 night stay.
Loved Everything About It!
My only reluctance in writing this review is that it will give you cause to raise your rates! My family and I loved staying at the Captain's Castle. Staying at the house is like walking back in time without losing any creature comforts. The view from the tower is quite lovely. We spotted whales, dolphins, seals and otters out in the bay. The location is fantastic, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium and Lovers Point Park are in walking distance. Tide pools across the street and a nature park next door help you appreciate the bounty of California's natural landscape. An added and unexpected bonus was the ability to park in the garage. The bed linens and towels are high quality, and I appreciated the free bottle of wine and cheese platter.
Loved This House
We rented this house to celebrate our 55th anniversary. It was perfect for our family. There was plenty of room for 8 of us. Every room was perfectly clean. The kitchen is well stocked. The furniture is in great shape and comfortable. Speaking of comfortable, the same goes for the beds. There were no complaints from anyone. The ocean views from the upstairs are beautiful. Speaking of stairs, I would caution anyone with mobility problems, as the stairs are quite steep. The back yard has both patio and lawn areas. Our son brought his dog and she had plenty of room to enjoy. There is also a small park, just across the street. This house is located in a great part of PG. It's within walking distance to the aquarium and Cannery Row, in one direction, and Lover's Point in the other direction. You can access The Coastal Recreation Trail, just across the street. Even though its located close to a busy street, we were not bothered by street noise, and the neighborhood was quiet. Our whole family loved the 3 days we stayed here.
Beautiful home in a fantastic location.
Our kids loved living in a "real castle" and we enjoyed easy walks to restaurants, the aquarium and the beach. Whale watching from the crow's nest was a highlight as well. This home is a gem....very unique, comfortable, clean and well equipped. Highly recommend.
Thank you for your wonderful review. We are delighted to hear that you and your children enjoyed our "castle" for your family vacation. Until next time....
The Monterey Peninsula is unique in its combination of breathtaking natural resources and a multiplicity of cultural and entertainment possibilities. You can find something for every possible taste. For nature lovers, there is the diversity of mountain and sea, for picnicking, surfing, fishing, horseback riding, hiking, beach combing, bird-watching, kayaking, scuba diving, tide pooling, biking and more. If you want a man-made excitement, we have art galleries galore, excellent fine-art museums, local theater, outstanding restaurants, boutiques, a natural history and a children's museum, a world-class aquarium, and that's just for starters. History buffs will have a field day exploring the adobes of Monterey. There's so much to do that you cannot possibly do it all in one visit, which means you will have to come back.
