Thanksgiving renunion fun

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed a small family reunion/Thanksgiving get together at the Wild Smith River Home because it's halfway between where we live near Portland, OR, and where the rest of the family is in Ukiah, CA. Though there is always a risk in booking a place sight-unseen, we couldn't have found a better place to stay.

The home is in beautiful condition and is very cozy. It took no time at all to settle in and get very warm and comfortable. AND I can't say enough for the surroundings! It was a very wet weekend but there was so much to see that we all spent a considerable amount of time outdoors anyway. The Smith River was extremely full and beautiful and everywhere we went there was flowing water, evergreen trees and fresh air. I would highly recommend this place as a peaceful getaway with lots to offer. I personally spent several hours sitting on the back deck just watching the river flow.

We also have two dogs and they loved the place! The yard was large enough for them to run without getting onto the road and the neighborhood was filled with dogs for Jimmy to play with. One by one they all seemed to come and visit him!

The house was fully stocked with everything necessary to just show up and have a great time (towels, blankets, soap, cooking utensils, etc.). There are lots of beautiful new windows and doors that provide plenty of light while allowing a feeling of forested living. The kitchen alone is interesting enough to justify the price of the rental - it has to be seen to be believed.

Finally, the support and guidance we received from the owner made for a very safe and reassuring stay. Everything was clearly explained throughout the reservation and arrival process and there were no unwelcome surprises of any kind. We even had a credit card mixup and J Dean spent an enormous amount of time and effort helping me straighten everything out. We only corresponded over email and I never had to wait more than a few hours for a reply.

I would highly recommend to anyone: there is no reason for hesitation - book now and enjoy the Wild Smith River Home.

Great communication, clean and comfortable home with a nice back view. River is great but hard to access so we didn't get down there. Great place! Would definitely recommend.

Wonderful time on beautiful Smith River

  • 5 of 5

This house and trip exceeded all of our expectations. We have been coming up to the Smith River and camping for many years and decided to have a more comfortable trip this year. I looked at a lot of rentals and this one stood out based on the location (wanted to be on the river) and house (it seemed well maintained and just generally nice).

And everything about the house was indeed super nice. Three bedrooms with comfortable beds (king, queen and two twins), two full bathrooms, very comfortable living room with a couch some sitting chairs and a TV, dining room with table for 6, fully appointed kitchen with pretty much everything you need. Nice deck with beautiful views of the river. Fireplace outside and BBQ. Laundry, cable, good Internet.

An important note. A lot of vacation houses we've rented have been filled with low quality stuff - things that it seemed people didn't want in their main house. Not this place. Everything here seemed like it was bought to be used by people in this house. I can't think of a single thing that was low quality or didn't work. You get the idea - it's a really nice place.

About the only thing that is not ideal is that you can not access the river from the house. You are perched above the river and there's a pretty long steep drop down from the porch to the river. This makes for great views, but means you have to trek out to get to the river. Fortunately there are a ton of places nearby. On the advice of the owner our first day we went to Stoney Creek on the North Fork. It's a 5 minute drive and then a half mile hike, and you end up crossing a creek and then clambering down some rocks to get to the river. It was spectacular. The swimming was great and there was absolutely nobody else around. Definitely go here if you can do the hike and don't mind climbing down some rocks to get to the river (my 7 and 11 year olds did it with no trouble). Other days we swam at a place about a half mile south of Gasquet right over the Mary Peocock bridge. There's a parking area there and a short trail down to river. This place is popular (maybe 10-20 people there most days) but great for kids - lots of wide open swimming, rocks of various sizes to jump off, some swift current that the kids "surfed" down and a lot of river life including tons of cutthroat, snakes and frogs.

Shop in Crescent City or Grants Pass before you come (people at Gasquet market super nice but not a ton of stuff) - and enjoy!

Divine relaxation!

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved this house! So beautiful, clean and relaxing. The sound of the river lulled us to sleep and everyone we met was so friendly. Great home base to explore the river, redwoods and coast, or just the deck to read and rejuvenate. Can't say enough fab things about our visit. Thank you!

The Smith River is one of the crown jewels of the National Wild and Scenic River System, which recognizes and protects rivers across the country. More than three hundred miles of the Smith River System are designated wild and scenic, more than any other river in the country. The emerald-green Smith River flows freely and naturally, without a single dam, for its entire length—the only major system in California to do so.

Hiking in this area is fabulous. If you enjoy communing with nature this area and retreat is the perfect match for your rejuvenation and inspiration.
