About J Dean Loring

The Smith River is one of the most pristine and beautiful places anywhere. After visiting over 50 countries I have not seen a place more natural and vibrant.

Why J Dean Loring chose North Coast California

To spend time enjoying the beauty of the Smith River and Six Rivers National Forest. I want to share it with others who appreciate such a peaceful and special place.

What makes this house unique

You can swim and hike is so many beautiful places here and often have them all to yourself. The water in the river is crystal clear and among the cleanest and freshest rivers anywhere. Wild Salmon, Steelhead and Ocean going Cutthroat Trout are plentiful but ellusive.

Beautifully appointed comfortable home for our vacation

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed here with another couple for 5 nights and 6 days. We were right at home in this beautifully appointed tasteful house. Our only complaint was the small kitchen but everything in it worked and we solved the problem by choosing to only have 1 person cooking at a time! We would stay at this home again in a heart beat!

One of the best vacations of our lives!!

  • 5 of 5

My family and I had such an AMAZING time at the River House. The house was well-stocked and super comfortable. It felt more like a home than a vacation rental. The beds were super comfy, and it was so pleasant sleeping to the sound of the river off the bedroom. The bathrooms were modern and clean, I loved the heated fan in the en suite!

There are so many hiking trails, that are minutes away, we found a new place to explore every day! The nature in Gasquet and the surrounding areas is spectacular. My boys had the best time searching for frogs, river snakes and banana slugs! (All of which are totally harmless btw.)

The redwoods at Boy Scout Tree Trail are the largest most impressive trees I have ever seen. Truly breath-taking, maybe the prettiest and most peaceful place I have ever experienced.

Cliff jumping and fishing at Stoney Creek was also super fun, as was tubing down the river off the Medrona trail. Bring river shoes for sure - game-changer! The Smith is a real deal rocky river bed, and they can get slippery!

The River House is a little hidden gem. Thank you Dean and Melissa for a vacation we will remember our whole lives!

The Smith River is one of the crown jewels of the National Wild and Scenic River System, which recognizes and protects rivers across the country. More than three hundred miles of the Smith River System are designated wild and scenic, more than any other river in the country. The emerald-green Smith River flows freely and naturally, without a single dam, for its entire length—the only major system in California to do so.

Hiking in this area is fabulous. If you enjoy communing with nature this area and retreat is the perfect match for your rejuvenation and inspiration.
