Mansfield House, a lovely and spacious mountain home, sits on 100+ acres of classic Vermont property. Located at the base of Mt. Mansfield and nearby Smugglers Notch, a vacation here is filled with a wide range of seasonal activities for the active and the relaxed.
There are two sleeping areas at opposite ends of the house. Two bedrooms (queen and king beds) are at the northern end of the house, with a shared bathroom featuring a field stone wall, tile, and walk-in shower. The southern end of the house features a bunkroom and 2 queen bedrooms, one with a twin trundle bed. There is a shared bathroom for these rooms, featuring a Vermont slate floor, vessel sink, and tub/shower. Also at this end of the house is the Master bedroom with king Tempur-pedic bed and a large en suite bathroom with walk-in shower and sweeping view of Mount Mansfield. All the bedrooms have been recently renovated and each has lovely linens and quilts.
The interior features cathedral ceilings, a large living room with field stone fireplace, and a field stone wall in the dining area, as well as wide oak and brick floors. Lovely views delight visitors from every window.
An open kitchen/dining area is at the center of the house. The 12-person birdseye maple dining room table has a sweeping view of Mt. Mansfield. This open area is wonderful for group cooking and socializing while enjoying the colors of a magnificent sunset.
There is a den off the kitchen with a second fireplace, sofa bed, and a second TV - nice for movies, cozy chats, or quiet reading. This space is also wonderful for children's movies, board games, or a quick escape from the bustle of the household.
We also take great pride in a very clean house - all the rooms are cleaned professionally using only all natural products.
The outdoor hot tub is available for soaking, while gazing up at Mt. Mansfield, or the stars.
A beautiful field above the pond is suitable for a large tent for hosting family reunions, small weddings, and other events.
The two acre swimming pond, sandy beach, beautifully landscaped lawns and gardens, and walking/XC skiing (or snowshoe) trails offer both activity and quiet, suitable for the energetic and the serene.
Looking for the country life and time with family or friends? You will love this setting.
Two very popular Vermont destinations are close:Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream Factory is 30 minutes away, and the Shelburne Museum, a large and fascinating 'living' museum is 45 minutes away. Lake Champlain, UVM, and St. Michaels College are all within easy reach. Hunting is possible in the area but not on the property please. Space for badminton, croquet, and soccer behind house, visible from kitchen and living room. Large swimming pond in front field.

About Patricia Evans
Built in 1965, Mansfield House is owned by a large Vermont family that enjoys seasonal visits here for hiking, skiing, snowshoeing, and swimming. Our parents/grandparents designed and built the property, and as a result Mansfield House has the feel of a visit to a family home. Photos of the family decorate one long hallway, and the Airplane room hints of the adventurous aviation history of Granddad's days as a pilot. The gardens and clear view to the mountain still reflect the family's love of beautiful outdoor spaces.

Mountain view bliss!
I went up to stay here for a relaxing weekend with my girlfriends. The house had a perfect layout so we all had our own space and a beautiful kitchen to gather in. The view is breathtaking. From the kitchen window you see a beautiful open field, pond and mountains. You turn around and there is the spacious backyard with another beautiful mountain. Sleeping in the master bedroom had the view of the backyard and mountain. Absolutely incredible! It was easy to get to, relaxed and it even had a walking trail behind the house. We loved the hot tub at night under the stars and sitting by the beautiful fire. It was extremely clean, cozy and open. I highly suggest for a family/friend getaway!
Our family and friends still gather at Mansfield House, in all seasons, so we agree that it is all the adjectives that you have used here: beautiful, breath-taking, spacious, clean, cozy, and open. And I'm so glad to hear about renters heading out on an adventure on our walking trails! The hot tub is the best after any kind of outing, and what a way to see stars - the best. Come again!
We had such a wonderful stay in the house. The house is very tastefully appointed and charming and very clean. It really didn't seem like a rental as it had all sort of nicknacks and books and cookbooks - as if someone really lives there. The kitchen had every sort of cooking utensil you could ever need and in fact it seemed like we were staying at a friend's house rather than a rental. It is located in a quiet lovely spot with mountain and meadow views. Everyone fell in love with the huge black lovable Newfoundland that welcomed us when we arrived. The house is great for two families. We had 4 adults, 2 small children and 6 older teenagers and had more than enough room. The house seems to have 3 sections: two bedrooms on the left side - one with a queen and one with a king - for the adults with a shared bath, which can be closed off from the living room for privacy (or to keep out the noise), a large kitchen and living room section with huge real fireplace, and then another bedroom section on the otherside of the house that sleeps 12 (4 bedrooms and a den with queen pullout couch) - perfect for all the kids to take over that part of the house. The kitchen setup was great for group cooking and chatting. We got all the kids making homemade pizzas around the large center island and they all had a ball. Even our teenagers absolutely loved the house and want to go back - especially for the hot tub and snow rolling at night! Patricia was also so helpful answering questions and even mailing back some shoes we had left there. We all hope to go back next year for a longer stay. Thank you for such a nice memory!
This is in fact our very well-loved family home that our mom and dad designed and built. We want it to feel homey and comfortable, but uncluttered so renters have plenty of space. The kitchen is really good fun for group cooking, and the two separate sleeping areas are very well-suited to the needs of differing age groups. We are so grateful to have renters who treat our property with care and respect, and enjoy our property as their own home-away-from home.
Perfect New Year!
We had an excellent time at this house during the New Year with my friends. The house was gorgeous with plenty of space for our group of 10. There was a magnificent view from all of the windows on the mountains covered in snow. We spent most of our time by the huge stone fireplace playing games and talking. The whole atmosphere in the house was very relaxing and cozy. At night we would sit in the hot tub outside even though it was snowing. Would definitely rent it again especially during the winter!
Mansfield House is always great for special occasions, as well as any other time sitting by the fire, soaking in the tub, and enjoying gorgeous views is what you are looking for. Come and see for yourself!
Great House, tons of space
This was a great house. Had all the space you could need, and all the amenities you could ask for. Thank you for a great stay.
Perfect place for a girls retreat!
This house and property was beautiful and exactly what I was hoping to find. The kitchen was fully stocked with any pots and pans we could possibly need. All the rooms were nicely decorated and clean, and the space itself was just the right size for our large group. The house itself has lots of character, and is decorated just like it is lived in. Very cozy, even though the house is so large! The hot tub was a favorite with everyone, and was incredible to soak in during a snow storm! Loved our stay here and would highly recommend it.
There are so many different reasons that guests find Mansfield House to be just the right place to visit. But the word 'retreat' is probably something they all have in common. Our parents chose this spot, on the side of this mountain, to enjoy natural beauty and active adventures. The next generation of our family, and our many appreciative renters, have continued to do the same. Our family has become stewards of our parents' vision and we are so grateful to the all of the renters who have supported Mansfield House with their respect and enthusiasm for this special place. Thank you to those who have visited and we look forward to hosting many of you in the future!
Fall Wedding Fun
We really enjoyed our time at Mountain House. We rented the house as our base for our son's wedding. Members of our family stayed with us at the house. The house is beautiful, and very personal, with family photos, paintings and memorabilia throughout. The house was also fully equipped, so we had everything we needed. The setting is great. Out the kitchen window we could see as far as Lake Champlain (a sliver of blue) and the Adirondack Mountains, and out the dining room window we looked at Mt. Mansfield. The evening light on the pond in front of the house was gorgeous. The wedding was in Richmond, so the house was very convenient for getting supplies in Burlington and making preparations at the wedding site. It also provided the perfect environment for our small rehearsal dinner. The biking and hiking from the house was wonderful. The house is very long, so the bedrooms are located on two wings, spaced far enough apart so everyone enjoyed privacy when they wanted it. The kitchen is very open and proved an natural gathering place in the morning for coffee, scones and talking. Betsy was great if we needed anything. It really was a great setting for our family gathering. Would love to go back to Mountain House again.
When it's time to create a once-in-a-lifetime occasion, it's important for it to be convenient, intimate, and dramatically beautiful. We are so glad that Mansfield House could provide all of that! As this reviewer has described, the light at the house can be very magical - the sunsets turn Mt. Mansfield pink and the rosy light over the Adirondacks can linger for a delightfully long time. The huge windows allow extensive views in both directions. If you love magical light and mountain adventure, in a warm, comfortable setting, come and enjoy Mansfield House!
The town of Underhill is a relaxing setting for a quiet country vacation or a convenient location for access to skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, biking, swimming, as well as shopping, restaurants, and sightseeing. It can all be done from this spectacular location.
