About Suzanne Balter

Growing up in Michigan, Charlevoix has been our summer vacation destination since childhood, and the full-time home of many family members. After moving to Oregon, we purchased this summer home to stay connected with family and to be able to enjoy our ideal vacation every summer. Swimming, sailing, bicycling, canoeing - we do it all.

Suzanne Balter purchased this house in 2000

Why Suzanne Balter chose Northern Michigan

We rented this house ourselves in 2000, fell in love with it, and purchased it before the summer was over. While the location was perfect, the house needed a lot of work. We renovated from top to bottom, expanding the porch, putting in a new kitchen and master bedroom/bathroom, along with more mundane things like a new roof, windows and siding. And then we spent a year decorating and furnishing the house in summer cottage style. The completed home was featured on the Charlevoix home tour in 2002.

We had an a amazing time in Charlevoix this year and really enjoyed this beautiful home. There was plenty of space for us and our guests and Pam was more than helpful to us! We especially loved the charm of each room and the 'homey' feel throughout. While we had such a great time I will say the layout of the house is very interesting! You can only get to a few of the bedrooms by going either up the back stairs or through another bedroom, which normally would not be an issue if we didn't have little ones. Overall though it was a great experience and we could not have had a better vacation.

Wonderful family home with lots of amenities!

  • 5 of 5

Thoroughly enjoyed our first visit to Charlevoix. The house was wonderful and we enjoyed having access to Lake MI and Lake Charlevoix. Being new to the area, we visited various beaches (our favorite was Mt. McSauba), spent a day at Mackinac Island, toured Castle Farms and the Mushroom houses. The kids had a lot of fun looking for petoskey stones too. We cooked dinner in the home numerous nights, and the kitchen was nicely stocked and had good cookware (a lot of rentals disappoint in this area). So glad we rented this house - we have wonderful memories from our week here.

This house is so charming! The kitchen had everything. Everything was very clean and up to date.

The neighborhood is wonderful to walk or bike around. I loved going for a bike ride in the morning when the kids and grandkids were still sleeping. We walked into town for dinner and ice cream. The bedrooms each had their own personality. I loved reading on the front wrap around porch with a swing. We grilled out and used the outside deck and table with chairs.

I would strongly recommend this house; we made very lovely memories here.

Lovely Home

  • 5 of 5

Our family truly enjoyed this lovely home for our vacation. The home was spacious and accommodated our children and grandchildren perfectly. The back deck was perfect for lunch and dinner, and the front porch was perfect for evening relaxation. The house is located in a great location for walking to town for shopping, visiting the park, and the evening walk for ice cream. A special surprise was the bikes that were waiting in the drive when we arrived, which were used by everyone.

The house is in a terrific location-you can walk to the Lake Charlevoix beach, into town, and bike almost anywhere! You can really park your car and take a break from it. The house feels like a lovely home-welcoming, exceptionally clean, beautifully decorated, all amenities inc washer and dryer so you can go home with everything done! There is also really a LOT of space so you can take extra kids with you etc if you have teens. Sitting on the porch is so fun-everyone says hi and are friendly. One thing not mentioned in other reviews is that Dixon Av is absolutely georgous-many houses had gardens to to die for and I had fun just walking around looking at them. Cooking is easy-plenty of kitchen stuff and good local groceries and eating out great too. We bough our little dog who met tons of other dogs on his walks-every seems to have a dog here! Great ice cream/few clothes shops for the teens and downtown is so fun just to walk around in. We went to LAke MI beach too-lovely and not crowded even July 4 week. It is life guarded. Pier was fun as was the bridge in town that opens for the boats to come in. GREAT magazine store in town ( in book store by Cherry Republic). We alos loved the bike /walking trails out towards Petosky. Just a great, clean, harmonius home that lends well to a ton of family time while giving you plenty of space to everyone to have time on their own too.
