We have visited Las Terrenas for vacation and rented Villa Chinola. We fell in love for both Las Terrenas, its beaches, food and lovely people and the Villa itself, so secluded while close to everything. We go back on regular basis but wanted also to share these experiences with others. Enjoy!
Sonia & Philippe purchased this villa in 2013
Villa Chinola was built by the former owners with their experience of living in the Carribean, in a very strategic place, on the back of the nicest white sand beach of Las Terrenas, Playa Las Ballenas, and a 10 min walk to the lively village and its services. The location is very residential, safe and quiet. The construction is of quality with a house remaining cool and opened on the luxuriant garden with its private pool.
Villa Chinola is a villa of 200 sqm carefully decorated in a calm environment at a few meters of the most beautiful white sand beach of Las Terrenas. Everything was thought for your comfort and well being: beautiful closed and totally private property of 900 sqm with its lovely swimming pool, large terrace, TV, DVD, washing machine. Housekeeping is included. All rooms are air conditioned.
Villa Chinola was perfect! Isobelle was warm and kind and so helpful as we do not speak Spanish.the housekeeper and guard were also very kind.
Villa Chinola was better than we expected and Paul the taxi driver was also very kind and funny.
Our experience has been wonderful at Villa Chinola. The house is simply amazing. The manager Valerie and the housekeeper Madelyn (who cooked for us delicious meals) were just wonderful and my 3 kids really enjoyed the pool and also the beach which is really close to the house. We recommend without any hesitation this house and we thank Philippe the owner for his good advices and recommendations in terms of restaurants and activities.
The house was nice, just as described. The maid came daily, she was very nice. The yard and outside area's where so inviting and peaceful, except the construction of some new houses behind the property. That was a bit noisy at times. All the bedrooms are open to the bathrooms so that does not help keep the space cool, the master has huge ceilings so cooling that was expensive and it still wasn't worth (or cool enough) the fee's charged. I was not at all cool enough for the money paid. Keep in mind you get hit with an electric bill upon leaving. We used the AC units very very minimally, I was still surprised with cost! We had overnight security that came with the rental, He was a very nice man and very helpful from 7:PM- to 6:AM, YET... we were robbed for everything on the patio sometime between 6am and 7am one morning. They stole my Bluetooth speaker, liquor and even all the bug spray. Luckily that was all that was out there, but the thought is scary, makes me think people in back watch the house and the movement of the people staying so beware. I've stayed in a few other rentals in the area, being robbed was not an issue. The other issue, that was pretty gross, not sure where or how but some how a rat was swimming in our pool, one of the guys grabbed it by the tail and flung it over the wall, thankfully the younger ones didn't witness it or pool swimming after that might have been A PROBLEM! This property is a bit hidden at the back of an area, walking at night is a bit creepy, you wont do it alone for sure. But the security guard does have dogs that kind of walk with you, helpful! The mosquito's are fierce, and everywhere. Bring lots of bug spray. But overall the house is beautiful and you can walk to the beach, the owner was very helpful and responded quickly.
The villa was well-equipped, very clean and had everything we needed. The grounds are beautiful, the pool is perfect and there is a guard at the house as well as a regular pool cleaner and daily maid service. The villa owner was incredibly responsive and helpful in setting up our trip, arranging our transportation to/fro Santo Domingo and having dinner and food on board for our arrival. Isabelle, the house manager, was very helpful and also speaks English, which was great for us. We could have probably relied on her for more if we wanted but we also wanted to explore the area ourselves. The villa is close to the beach, easy walking distance, but for going back and forth into town, I definitely recommend renting a scooter, quad or car. We rented a quad and it was a blast and not very expensive. Overall, our group had a fantastic time. A few things I'd recommend:
- If you can't speak Spanish, or know even a little, Las Terrenas can be a little difficult as we rarely found anyone to speak English but for at the taco stand at the end of the street. Luckily, two of the people in my party knew a little and we could get buy with some broken Spanish and lots of body language!
-Use Isabelle for arranging excursions. We didn't have the experience we wanted with Rey's excursion but possibly because some things got lost in translation. Our "captains" also knew no English which can be scary when out to sea. So stick to what Isabelle recommends and let her help you!
-Rent a quad.
-Use the maid and cook for shopping - she's great! We did want to check out the local grocery stores ourselves though and they're huge, have everything you need and are pretty much the same as in the States.
-The beach is great - take time to just sit and enjoy the sun and warm water. It's pretty much empty but it's easy to grab a chair at one of the resorts on the beach and get bar and food service. They don't mind!
-Don't count on a long hot shower. The water didn't stay hot or warm and the pressure is low.
-Most places took USD but helpful to have small bills of local cash.
Hope this helps when booking your stay!
My family and I have used VRBO in the past to rent properties in the U.S. and were always amazed. This trip we were a bit hesitant because it would be the first time we rent outside of the country. We wanted a cozy place yet big enough for a total of 8. Villa Chinola exceeded our expectations! Although, there are two things which I would point out, the dirt road to walk to the beach was a bit of a pain because of the rain puddles and the mosquitos! But we managed, the Villa was so great we all forgot about it.
Philippe made everything extremely easy and answered all our questions without hesitation. We booked within one week of arrival and everything went very smoothly. Upon arrival we were greeted by the Villa Manager, Isabelle! She greeted the entire family and instantly made us feel welcome.
Yesenia, Finelis and Felix were also exceptional! Thank you all for all of your help and service during our stay! Muchisimas gracias!
We stayed at Villa Chinola in May 2015.
It was a terrific Villa with excellent staff.
We had the cook prepare lunch for us every day and she did a great job!
The villa is well located in Las Terrenas; about a 5 minute walk from the beach and 15 minute walk into Las Terrenas.
The house manager was extremely helpful in the orientation.
Philippe was also very responsive to my inquiries and provided lots of information.
I would definitely visit this property again!
The villa chinola is a magnificent villa. The property is very clean and well-maintained, close (but not to close) to many attractions (several very nice beaches), restaurants and bars. Both the owner (Philippe) and the manager (Isabelle) provided exceptional customer service: in particular, they pre-arranged everything for us (transfer, car rentals, etc.) ahead of our arrival and provided several recommendations. We particularly enjoyed dipping in the very nice swimming pool at any time of the day (or the night). Will definitely go back!
