A retired school principal and his teacher wife-and-former-sweetheart spent the last 8 years renovating this 1832 office building built by Samuel Cunard, the founder of Cunard Steamship Lines. Before that we worked in schools in three provinces, one territory and two countries.
Ron Arnold purchased this apartment in 2004
One side of my family descended from Ship Hector settlers. We were looking for a retirement project in the Maritimes and this building needed some work, was located on the harbour and was empty. Kind of a no brainer!
Cunardhouse is a piece of classic Maritime architecture and turned out to be a piece of history as well. Looking onto the harbour on the second floor are three crooked windows that make it stand out in all the old photos of the waterfront. They present a unique 'face' and we think we know their story.
My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this spot, well equipped and clean. Was very quaint and charming. There were plenty of things to do and see around town while still relaxing without all the hustle and bustle. Lots of restaurants and good food/prices. It was also close enough to visit nearby vacation spots. also enjoyed that there were lots of brochures and maps available and well written notes about the property itself and any instructions .
Great location within walking distance of all the town has to offer. Lovely to be so near the water and feel the sea breezes. The place has been meticulously renovated and is comfortable, and we especially loved the fluffy towels and beautiful bathroom.
My sister, brother, mother and I spend 3 days in Pictou as part of a NB/PEI/NB road trip to celebrate my sister's 50th birthday. We only planned 3 days in Pictou and we all agree we could have stayed longer. The home is wonderful and spacious. The water pressure and shower --- AMAZING. My brother was actually looking as the mattress labels on the queen bed because it was so comfortable he wanted to buy one. He has us all try laying on it! The location is great for exploring Cape Breton and PEI. Ron was wonderful with communication throughout and helpful when we arrived......late. LOL!
The accommodation was very good the facilities were excellent. There could be a non stick pan for those who cook but every thing was clean and well presented. The weather was not at its best but that is not anyone's fault. All in all it was a great stay
Stayed 3 nights at the Cunard house. Based here and traveled to Cape Breton.
House is well equipped, clean and very comfortable.
Pictou is charming. Loved Sharon's place for breakfast.
Ron and Ginny are the perfect host!!
We had a very relaxing stay at Cundard House and Ron was very helpful. The house is spacious, very clean and fully equipped with all the amenities you need. Extra touches included free wi-fi, satellite TV, laundry facilities with detergent and even loaner beach towels for the kids! The town of Pictou is very quaint with plenty of restaurants to choose from. The price was reasonable and the location was central to many areas including PEI which we did a day trip excursion to.
Ron seemed genuinely interested in the feedback to make the house better and even brought us a teapot based on someone else’s suggestion. We definitely recommend a stay at Cundard House.
