About the property

2 Miles From Sleeping Bear Dunes, 205 Ft Lake Front On Platte Lake, 2200 Sq Ft

Historic Platte Lake House, nestled in the Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore, for rent this Spring, Summer and Fall! Be one of the few lucky guests to spend your vacation in this amazing home.

The house is 2200 sq ft and has 4 Bedrooms, a 1 Bdrm Guest Cabin , 2 Full Bathrooms, Spacious Kitchen, Combined Large Dining Room- Living Room, Additional TV-Lounge Room, Lakefront Entertainment Room(with futon), 3 Tier Oversized Deck, with one tier over the lake, and Beach Bonfire Pit with BBQ and Refrigerator. There is also a 70 foot dock for sunbathing and fishing. The Home is located on 1.3 acres of wooded land, has 205 feet of private lakefront and is only 2 miles away from Lake Michigan and the south end of Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore. Only a twenty minute drive to the world famous Sleeping Bear Dune Climb and the stunning Pierce Stocking Bluffs. Also only a 30 minute drive to Traverse City.

This home is steeped in History and will charm you from the minute you roll down its private gravel drive. Built in the early 1900's by our Great Grandfather John Peck, a famous Platte Valley logger, the house is around 100 years old. It is built entirely from local lumber and has a personality that cannot be found in many other homes. When it was first built the home was used as a summer camp for boys and girls, and was affectionately named Camp Wasquam-- after the Native American Family that worked for our Great Grandfather. At that time, there were only two other houses on Big Platte Lake.

On top of this rich history, the house’s location is exceptional. Its proximity to the Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore and the Grand Traverse Area is ideal. There are an abundance of activities and attractions at your doorstep: numerous hiking trails and dune climbs along the Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore, great fishing and canoeing on the Upper/Lower Platte Rivers, the Historic Lighthouse at Point Betsie, unique shops/restaurants of Beulah, Frankfort, and Glen Arbor, the one-of-a-kind Cherry Bowl Drive-In Theater(only 1.5 miles away), several nationally ranked golf courses, art and music events at the internationally renowned Interlochen Center for the Arts, and relaxing Winery tours on both the Leelanau and Old Mission Peninsulas. These are just a few of the many activities in the area, almost all of which are within 30 miles-- many only 10 miles-- and if you book a stay with us you will have access to our large and comprehensive database of all the worthwhile activities and attractions in the area.

Your private piece of heaven

  • 4 of 5

I stayed at the cottage last year during the spring, while the house was being renovated. The house had a very quaint rustic feeling that was very therapeutic for a city girl like myself. The wood work was beautiful!! There is plenty of space and privacy and glass windows to observe the plethora of wild life guaranteed to visit you! I spent sunsets kayaking from the backyard to the river not far away. Hiking and running trails were close and endless. The dunes are so much fun and provide great opportunities for panoramic views of lake michigan. I even saw a black bear in the swampy area. There was plenty of migrating and native birds to observe while having my organic morning coffee from the market basket not far away. I miss this place. It is so tranquil and such a vacation from the fast paced city. The owner sent me photos of the upgrades done after I left, and I absolutely love them. Such a cute cottage! I will be back some day and look forward to coming back to this recently upgraded cottage.

first family vacation in Michigan

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed the house and cottage very much. The best thing was the shallow water in front of the house. It was great for the young kids to wade and play in. It was also warmer than Lake Michigan. The kayaks were used every day. Nothing taste better than a hot dog cooked over an open fire in the very nice, big pit at the house. It was a convenient base for our trips to the light houses, dunes, trails, horse riding and The Cherry Republic.

Wonderful family vacation

  • 5 of 5

High marks for Kathryn and Geoff! Couldn't have been more pleased with this lake home. We were a family gathering of 8 adults with children ages 4 and under. Kathryn welcomed us with clear and helpful directions and made it clear she was available for help if needed. Everything was neat, clean, and exactly as described. The lake is beautiful and quiet with easy access to Lake Michigan for sand and sunsets. Beyond the convenience of the many sleeping and gathering options inside the home, the multiple decks and play areas outside were a pleasant surprise. Play together as a group or find a quiet spot to yourself... the options are yours. All left with only one regret ... wishing we'd had yet another week to stay.

A cottage with nice interior, exterior spaces at the edge of one of the great National Parks.

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 11 enjoyed this wonderful well maintained older structure with nice interior, exterior spaces. Several decks and other places to sit outside for reading, resting or enjoying the view were a nice feature. Two of our girls enjoyed staying in the adjacent small cottage. The proximity to the great Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore with many places to hike, bike, explore and almost 40 miles of beautiful beaches was important to us as was swimming and boating on Platte Lake. Access to a clothes washer / dryer as well as a dishwasher were much appreciated by our large group. We enjoyed meeting Katherine and appreciated her concern for the property and her thoughtful attention to detail as she introduced us to the home and area.

Both Katherine and Geoff were nice to work with. All in all this was a super experience for us.

Great cottage on a beautiful lake

  • 5 of 5

This is a very clean and pretty cottage with a great deal of lakefront beauty. Despite the rainy weather we had a wonderful romantic weekend. We are looking forward to staying again. Owners were helpful and available for questions and we had access to local neighbors for any pressing issues. Great kitchen for dining in as well.
