We had a wonderful stay at the Mushroom Lodge. The 5 star rating we are giving is taking everything into consideration, from price, to location to amenities. You have to know what you are getting and if you do, this rental will exceed your expectations. The property was built in 1955 and does show its age, but not in a way that hinders enjoyment. The inside had more than enough room for our family of 5 to enjoy a wonderful, week long vacation. The living room was very comfortable and we watched movies every night with the whole family. The outside deck was very spacious and the grill was extremely clean; the igniter even worked! One bathroom was challenging but more than enough of a compromise to obtain a property in such a beautiful location with private access to Long Pond and a private dock. The kids had a great time every night jumping off the dock into the water. It was great waking up to such s wonderful view every morning and a huge window to easily see out while we enjoyed a cup of coffee. We tried the boat once but it was a lot of work getting it into the water, the oars are old and warped and only one of the oar hinges is a complete circle to keep the oar from popping out during rowing. Granted I just might be to old for rowing a family of 5 in a big metal boat with warped oars, but that was the only disappointment we had with the experience. The location was great proximity to all of our activities. We never had to drive more than 10-20min no matter where we were going on MDI. If you choose not to eat in, there are restaurants for all meals just right down the road in southwest harbor. Grumpy's was good for breakfast and Quiet Side Cafe was great for ice cream, huge slices of awesome pie and cookies. The management company was extremely helpful and responsive and was very pleasant to work with. We never wondered about anything; all information was provided up front.
Mushroom Lodge is a very pleasant spot to spend a summer vacation. The location on Long Pond is perfect for swimming, kayaking, and taking in the sunshine. The pond water is crisp and clean, warm enough to stay in for a while. The property is wooded and has lots of tall pines, trees, and shrubs.. A deer stopped by the front yard almost every day, and there were ducks and birds on the pond. There is a alot of outdoor space to enjoy, and the porch overlooking the pond is good for outdoor dining and lounging. The house itself is small but mostly comfortable; the living room has TV and a big bay window; the kitchen is tight but manageable; the bedrooms were pleasant spaces but the mattresses can use an upgrade, It is a scenic 15 to 20 minute drive across the island to Bar Harbor. Or to Thurston's Lobster Pound. The pictures above are accurate, but don't capture the beauty of a Maine summer day. Overall Mushroom Lodge will not disappoint if you love the outdoors. Perfect place for kids and animals too.
