Rent a small motorboat to explore the dramatic coastline, hidden coves and secluded beaches of the island. Visit the ruins of a Bronze Age settlement; take a wine tasting tour of the island’s vineyards known worldwide for their malvasia wine. For the adventurous, hike to the 965 m/3,165 ft. summit of the extinct volcano behind Santa Marina for breathtaking views of the other islands and Sicily. Visit the five other small towns on Salina by rented motor scooter, car or enjoy the scenery while taking the efficient buses that run hourly.

A 20 minute hydrofoil ride will take you to Lipari, the largest of the islands, for more shopping, restaurants; tour the historic cathedral fortress that towers about the town, visit the world class archaeological museum there with exhibits dating from 3,000 B.C. Or take the hydrofoils to the island of Stromboli and its active volcano; there are guided evening tours of slopes of the volcano, or a take dinner cruise around the island and see the sputtering glow of the volcano.

Enjoy the sun, the natural beauty, the relaxed ambience and the exquisite cuisine of these islands. Salina’s many restaurants range from family friendly to fine dining, or you can prepare your own feast from the island’s fresh and bountiful produce, fish, meats and baked goods – buon appetito!

About Mary Ann & Jim

The villa is my family's ancestral home. Twenty years ago my husband and I started restoring it, an endeavor that would not have been possible without the enthusiastic support and assistance of our extended family in Salina and the Aeolian Islands. We vacation there each year and rent the villa at other times to defray the costs of maintaining it.

Why Mary Ann & Jim chose Santa Marina Salina

This is a genuine, centuries old villa of which there are only a handful remaining in Salina. While it has been updated by adding plumbing, electricity, air conditioning, internet connectivity, and modern bathrooms and kitchen, great care has been taken to preserve its original style and character. Many of the doors and windows including their hardware are original, and there are antique tiles, antique tile reproductions and locally produced terracotta tile throughout the villa. Two of the rooms have ceilings which were painted with intricate designs over a 100 years ago; there is a complete, though non-functioning, 'palmento' wine press on the lower level, again one of the few remaining in Salina; the stairs are centuries old. The furniture is a mix of antiques, antique reproductions and other, more modern Aeolian style furniture. The villa's location on a narrow, pedestrians only 'street'--and an easy walk to Santa Marina's many amenities--adds to its charm. We think you will find the villa to be a unique and enjoyable complement to the beauty of the Aeolian Islands.

Perfect Holiday in Santa Marina Salina

  • 5 of 5

We rented the Grand Villa for two weeks in May and the holiday was perfect. The Villa has heaps of room and character and a fantastic view over the sea from the roof. There are plenty of local shops for food and wine , several restaurants and it is an easy walk to the port and the local bus service.

Marusca is very welcoming and quickly responds to any queries.

This was our second stay at the Villa and we will be back again.

A fabulous place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 8 rented the Grand Villa for a week. What a fabulous time we had! The apartment is very well located and has easy access to local shops and shopping facilities. It is a short walk to the port of Santa Marina and also to the bus/transport facilities.

The Villa, itself, is FABULOUS. It easily accommodated all 8 of us with plenty of room for all of us to spread out and have some 'personal space'. The accommodation is spread over two levels; the ground level has a bedroom with a separate bathroom and a huge family room area. It's an ideal area to sit and read - a place for some quiet time.

The upper level (stairs to the main floor level) houses three bedrooms, one bedroom with an ensuite and the other two bedrooms with a shared bathroom. The bedrooms are very spacious, comfortable with lots of storage for clothing etc. There is a sitting room on this level plus a dining area that houses a huge dining table. The kitchen is well-fitted out and the selection of colourful platters and bowls is just wonderful!

There is a laundry (lower level) iron and ironing board (a rare find in Italy!). There is Wi-Fi in the home.

The views from the outside main area and upper area are fabulous and it's great to be able to sit up on the upper deck as the sun sets, sipping wine, eating nibbles and taking in the view.

The house is well-appointed and has some wonderful old character features. For example, the very old wine press on the lower floor and the decorative ceilings in the main sitting area and main bedroom.

The owners Mary Ann and Jim are very helpful. They respond quickly to inquiries and questions. They provided a very detailed instruction manual in the home (in English) which makes it easy to operate appliances such as the washing machine. Marusca (Mary Ann's cousin), welcomes you to the apartment. Though she only speaks Italian, she is very accommodating and with my limited understanding of Italian, I was able to get the gist of things.

In summary: This house is very comfortable and the location of the Villa is absolutely superb. There is plenty of space to spread out and it gives you the chance to live like a local!

We loved our stay at the Grand Villa and I highly recommend it if you want an authentic 'Salina' experience. It's the perfect accommodation for groups and families.

Wonderful and peaceful place in the aeolian islands

  • 5 of 5

We rented the Villa for a week in August and had a fantastic stay over there. Mary Ann - the owner - was very helpful before we rented as she provided lots of information ahead of time and helped to make the reservation totally seamless from the US. In Santa Marina, Salina her cousin Marusca welcome us, toured the house, and introduced us to the local grocery shop. Marusca speaks only Italian but she will do anything to make sure you have the best experience over there!

The Villa is perfectly located in Via Roma, a few steps away from the popular and vibrant Via Risorgimento. You will find there many shops, groceries, fresh fruits, bakery,... and many outstanding restaurants. The Villa is huge! Can accommodate 2 families easily, while still providing some intimacy. 2 terraces outdoor give a fantastic view on Lipari and Panarea islands.

Our week was very relaxing; we enjoyed several local restaurants, rented a motor boat for a day and tour the island (there are a couple of places where you can stop and enjoy a good swim). Also went on a boat excursion for a day; stopped at Panarea for a couple of hours (enjoyed the granitas...) and had dinner next to the impressive and active Stromboli.

The small rocky beach in Santa Marina offers a great place to swim all day long (bring swimming shoes though). There is also a place with shallow water for the younger kids.

The week was a little too short for us to enjoy Lipari and its fantastic museum but we'll come back!

Very nice stay in Grand Villa Salina

  • 5 of 5

We had a very nice time within Grand Villa Salina. This is a large very charming and comfortable house with huge nice bedrooms and lounge and several terraces plus a nice garden with a plum tree giving every day delicious plums.

The villa is in the right area, at a walking distance from nice stores, cafes and a beach and it was perfectly clean and already provided with some products like water, olive oil (we are in Italy!), etc which is quite rare but very nice when you arrive somewhere.

The cousin of the owner, Marusca, kindly took care of us and she is a very sweet person, as well as the owner Mary Ann. It took me the opportunity to use my Italian, which is unfortunately very poor, but we managed to understand eachother.

I will highly recommend this property to my friends if they wish to go to Eaolian Islands.

The Grand Villa is an amazing property right in a great location on Salina. Santa Maria is a great town and the Villa is right off the main street(pedestrian only) and you can walk to everything in town and to thegreat snorkeling and swimming, the ferry, etc. We loved eating outside on the balcony at nite looking out on the ocean and other islands. We really enjoyed going to the little nearby markets to shop and then cook at the Villa. There are also a lot of great restaurants you can walk to. Mary Ann, the owner, is amazing and was incredibly helpful. Her cousin met us at the ferry and took us to the Villa.

Salina is a magical island that we totally fell in love with. You can walk a few blocks from the Villa and catch ferries that go to 6 other nearby islands and Salina has a lot to see and do also. Stromboli Island has an active Volcano and we took a boat tour there and watch lava coming out of the volcano at night. We spent 8 nites in Salina and would of liked to stay a lot more. We like Salina so much that we decided to get married there next summer instead of in California.

Fantastic stay in Salina, Sicily, Aeolian Islands

  • 5 of 5

A group of 7 Californians (5 adults and 2 older teenagers) stayed at the Grand Villa for 6 nights in late June 2012. We can only give high praise for the stay in a truly “grand villa” as it was everything we had hoped for and more. It was obvious they have done some recent renovations and put a lot of effort in and comfort to the villa. The space was HUGE and more than enough space to sleep over 12 without being too close to others. The owners kept the feel from the old villas but modernized it in all the right ways (e.g., AC in most rooms) for visitors to the island. We have rented quite a few places in Europe through VRBO and found this villa among the best overall. It was loaded with everyday items like a more-than-fully equipped kitchen but furniture and amenities that made it feel more like home than a rental. Also, the villa had a number of terraces with panoramic views of the island, sea, and even distant volcanic islands (Panarea, Stromboli). Each morning we could go down and have a delicious coffee/cappuccino or granites (you have to try them) as it was a very short distance to the center piazza. There is nothing quite like swimming in that cerulean water. The biggest plus was simply that it was comfortable accommodations, which helped make the stay more authentic and relaxing. There is so much to see around the islands that this was a great central point to see it all. We rented a boat on 2 separate occasions and really saw the Mediterranean up close with all its life and beauty. There aren’t many English speaking people that seem to come to Salina (especially at that time of year) but it was a grand experience to explore the island like Aeolians as we believe this group of islands should be better known as a vacation destination. Plus, there is a local representative (a charming Marusca) that can help with anything that comes up. We all agreed that we would come back and rent the Grand Villa again since it was such a positive experience and we got out of the trip exactly what we wanted – to swim in the Mediterranean, have plenty of good food (the seafood is varied and amazing), local delicious wines, and plenty of rest ‘n relaxation.
