Owner / Property Manager purchased this cabin in 1965
The location was good. Though it was less than some the kitchen and bathrooms really were outdated and worn looking. The beds were good downstairs which I was grateful for. The entire place had labels of the do's and don'ts I felt like i was in kindergarten.
We came to the cabin on very warm days (i.e. High 80's). There is no a/c, which was not stated, nor did I think about needing one during our stay. But, the cabin is a heat trap and registered 91 degrees in the afternoon. This is even with us keeping all windows wide open and fans on all night and shutting the windows in the morning to keep as much cool air in. It was just plain uncomfortable, to say the least. We were out all day and by 3-4, was tired after our outing w/ kids. The comforters were also extremely thick and not appropriate for the summer weather. Other than that, it was comfortable but definitely not for summer stay.
We were two couples, a toddler and an 8 year-old and the cabin was a good size for us. If we had any more people, it would have felt a little small. The location is great - we went to Alpine Lake and Big Trees and we were close to both. It is so beautiful there! The kitchen is well-stocked and the table was a good size for our group. The upstairs shower was unusable, but I told the owner after we left, and he said he would look into it. The other issue was small: we were excited to use the deck for outdoor games, but it was pretty messy and covered in pine needles. We just had to do some sweeping to make it usable. This was a sweet, cozy cabin and we really enjoyed our stay! In addition, the owner made himself available if anything came up, which we appreciated. All in all, a very positive experience!
very beautiful remote location (not isolated, there are close neighbors unfortunately). only a few minor complaints. i don't think the owner cleaned the cabin after the previous renters left.when we checked out that cabin was way cleaner than when we checked in. some pet hair on the couches, some hair in the bath tub, broken blinds in one of the bedrooms, and a tear in the comforter. i would just expect it to be a little bit cleaner/kept up considering the price they charge. but like i said, great location. big trees state park is 5 minutes away, bear valley 30 minutes, and angels camp 10 minutes away. check out moaning caverns in angels camp and natural bridge.
Clean cabin, well-stocked kitchen, good instructions on checking-in/out, using multi-media equipment, etc. Great to have WiFi, etc. Good location...
My one complaint is the lack of linens... Would be nice if they were supplied. BUT since they are NOT (unless $75 linen service is requested at booking time), that needs to be much more clear in email they send with check-in instructions; I caught it and brought my own, thankfully, but it was vague and not emphasized. Would have been miserable to show up w/no linens and have to find some to buy somewhere in Arnold.
This cabin is well maintained and very clean. The kitchen is fully stocked with toaster oven, blender, dishes, pots and pans, etc. I loved that the adults could have the 2 downstairs bedrooms and the 5 girls had the loft upstairs all to themselves. The cabin also has a great wrap around porch for BBQing and enjoying the trees.
It is also great that the pool/lake/snack bar complex is only minutes away by walking. We spent a day swimming in the lake, playing Frisbee golf, and horseshoes. You can also play ping pong and tennis. There is a $25 per family per day fee, but that was known to us ahead of time. Bring your own floatation devices, beach chairs and fishing poles (trout/blue gill) for the lake. Surprisingly my kids preferred the lake to the pool.
Excellent customer service! We arrived a few hours early while the cleaning crew was still there, and they let us store our food in the refrigerator while we went and had lunch in Arnold, so I didn't have to worry about it spoiling. Also, the upstairs shower had an issue and the maintenance man came out on a Sunday night with his sons to fix it.
Only 2 downsides...one of the beds downstairs is squeaky and gave my friends a poor nights sleep (but they are also used to a pillow top). Our bed was fine. There is no air conditioning, which is probably not an issue most of the time, but we arrived in lower 90's/upper 80's temps. They are well stocked with fans, but it was still rather warm.
We also went to Calaveras Big Trees to see the amazing Giant Sequoias which was only 10 minutes away, and 5 minutes into Arnold to use the grocery store and visit the espresso bar.
Overall it was an excellent way to celebrate my daughter's 13th birthday and I would recommend this property for someone craving fresh, mountain air!
