Overview

About the property

Two bedroom, one full bath, sleeps up to six over 8 years old

Sharing Gates by the Sea -

Walk about 60 yards, around the corner, to the warmest beaches in Santa Cruz, including Sunny Cove and Santa Maria beaches. Play in the sand, boogie board, wander a long stretch of beach, explore the tide pools, and enjoy the sunset. Walk to nearby restaurants. The cottage is located halfway between the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, and Capitola Village (two scenic miles each way).

The little beach house...Sharing Gates by the Sea...was once a part of the Victorian resort, the Hotel Villa del Mar, now a retreat center on 19th Avenue. Built in the 1890s, the 580 square foot cottage has personality and charm. The peaked redwood-paneled ceiling makes the living room feel spacious. The cottage sleeps six over eight years old.. There is a queen bed in the bedroom, and a full-size sofa bed in the living room. The private, sun porch room has a double sofa bed, and is used as a small, second bedroom. The cozy garden surrounding the house is fully fenced.

Wonderful cottage by the sea!

  • 5 of 5

This property was absolutely perfect for our mini vacation. It is a close walk to Sunny Cove, Starbucks and great restaurants. The space is perfect and has everything you would need for an overnight stay.

Could use some upkeep

  • 2 of 5

While this house is cute and charming, I would have to say that some money needs to be put into the upkeep of it. The stone walkways are an accident waiting to happen. My husband and I both turned our ankles trying to walk it. Also, there is no place to put the chairs and table which were left there to enjoy the outdoors. The area is soooo uneven! There are a great deal of little nooks in the yard that are junky looking, places where there is nothing planted, hoses are out. At one point there is a 2x4 holding up the fence. When you look out the only bedroom window, you see a junky, weed filled back yard. The only bathroom is in the only bedroom. This house is for 3 people max, I don't care how many sleeping sofas and cots there are. It just needs some TLC... especially for that price.

Location, location, location! Cozy and comfortable, too.

  • 5 of 5

This house is a charmer. It's small to be sure -- but in a cozy way, not a bad way. Although there's no air conditioning, you can open the windows for a nice breeze to make it perfect on all but the hottest days. Besides, you're likely to be spending your days exploring the walking-distance beach areas as well as everything else the local area has to offer!

The shower had good water pressure (hey, that matters to me!). The kitchen was well-stocked with utensils, although we didn't do any cooking during our stay. There are some decent local restaurants within a few blocks.

Everything went smoothly from check-in to check-out, there were no problems, and when we needed WiFi it worked without a hitch.

Would I stay here again on future visits to Santa Cruz? Definitely! For the same price in this area, you can get a really crummy motel room. So why not choose something a lot better?

A nice small cottage to spend the weekend in

  • 4 of 5

We had a good time exploring the city for Mother's day with our mom and stayed there for a night. It was a very pleasant stay. The fun part was being able to light a small fireplace to keep the cottage warm. There was plenty of heaters there in case it got cold at night. The host was very responsive when we had some last minute questions about the fire log. The host even gave us an extended check out time so we can take our time during the day to explore the city and come back to rest before a long drive back home. The only thing I wasn't sure of was why the $130 cleaning fee didn't cover washing the dishes and putting them away for a 1 night stay. We thought it should cover the cost for such a short amount of stay but it didn't.

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking such good care of the cottage. I'm glad that you enjoyed your stay and that I could grant a late check out for you. I appreciate your comment about the dishes. I will review the departure instructions and update them. I hope that you return again soon! --- Jeannie

Cute, cozy & conveniently located

We'd definitely return and have already recommended this spot to family.

My error: when I read "hear the ocean waves" I thought we would be closer to the beach.

Cozy, close to the beach!

  • 4 of 5

We were excited to bring a couple of French exchange students to the Boardwalk. This was the perfect place for one night with our little group. Everyone got a good night's sleep and we spent a gorgeous morning with a walk on the beach and a warm up hot chocolate at Starbucks. The cottage had everything we needed for a short stay.
