Aloha I have been traveling to Hawaii and around the world for 29 years as an international flight attendant. Hawaii struck a cord with me when I first visited in 1985. I knew this was where I belonged. My husband, Jeff Noll also traveled and lived abroad having built golf courses internationally and domestically for 18 years and the past 10 years as a General Contractor licensed in the state of Hawaii and Florida. He has restored Historical Homes, renovated ones that need a little love and built dream homes for clients from coast to coast. On his first trip here he definitely shared the same sentiment that this was our destiny. To be here, nurture our lives and this land, with love, creativity and concern for the ecological future of North Kohala. It is a privilege and responsibility we relish. We look forward to sharing our bit of paradise with you.
A Hui Hou!
The Owner purchased this cottage in 2005
We had visited the Big Island over the years and North Kohala resonated instantly for us
The Kohala winds along with the sound of the adjacent Kohala stream makes for a very relaxing stay, whether enjoying the lush gardens, bird watching and resident ducks swim, or playing a fun game of croquet with friends in the midst of Coconut Palms, Kona Coffee, Avocado, Macadamia Nut, Kukui Nut, Papaya, Breadfruit, Fig, Lychee trees and a large variety of citrus trees just to name a few. The pineapple grove is always a surprise to visitors thriving next to giant bamboo stands, sugar cane, banana's and passion fruit vines.
The beautiful view of Maui which is enjoyed reverently during morning yoga on the Lanai is the perfect way to greet the day.
Sunset is the ideal time for a easy walk along the Kohala Stream Trail where spectacular views sweeping down over the village of Hawi and the coast you see Maui rising out of the Pacific Ocean before your eyes. The view of Mt. Haleakala on Maui bids you a sweet journey into the evening show of brillant stars drapping over you like a tent sparkling with a million diamonds so clear you think you're in a dream.
The heavy sigh you exhale as you arrive at this lush, verdant property is only the first of many you will experience while staying at Bamboo Cottage. "Can this really be our home for our stay?", you will ask, after another relaxing sigh. Yes! This wonderfully appointed and beautifully situated cottage will become your home, and the charming village of Hawi will become your hometown.
Jennifer and Jeff are the most welcoming and accommodating of hosts. Fruit from their trees - lemon, orange, grapefruit, avocado - graced our the kitchen counter when we arrived. Jennifer showed me where to pluck some ginger root, which I used in a vinaigrette on island greens one evening when we chose to dine-in. The kitchen is small but incredibly efficient (I am a culinary professional and this was, by far, one of the best kitchens I've ever cooked in. And the view does not hurt, either!). Shop at the Hawi farmer's market on Saturday for island produce, fruit and other goodies and enjoy a night or two on the lanai after preparing your own dinner!
The town of Hawi is funky, fun and friendly with an island vibe you are not likely to find anywhere else. Bamboo is a favorite restaurant of ours and if you are lucky, local son and slack key guitar virtuoso John Keawe will be playing there. Sushi Rock rocks, too!
It does rain frequently in North Kohala, and the wind can be blustery at times, but just sit on the lanai, read a good book, listen to birdsong, watch the clouds, and catch a glimpse of Maui across the channel. This will make for a special time on a special island, in a very special place, the Bamboo Cottage.
We look forward to our next stay at our home away from home!
This place was wonderful and was way beyond my expectations. The kitchen is fully equipped and there is a super nice outdoor shower. Everything, towels, linens and etc are perfectly clean and new. Plus, it's bigger than it looks on pictures. My recommendation is: Don't miss this place if you are visiting hawi :)
by the way, there are even sets of fins and snorkels which you can use.
Oh, how I miss Hawaii. This cottage is awesome, somehow they've managed to make it feel like you're home when you walk through the door. Warm, welcoming, cozy, peaceful, and accomodating. We spent 3 nights here on our 8 night tour around the Big Island and it was perfect for us. We were out and about for most of our stay, yet every morning I woke up rested and refreshed for the new day. If you want to make to the big island I highly recommend staying here at the Bamboo cottage!
Coming north to Hawi, staying in the bamboo cottage was a relaxing break after jetting around the Kona area and an experience we will not soon forget. I happily give the property 5 stars because we enjoyed our 3 nights at there in the cottage so much. We especially liked the serene rural location. It was a great home base for daily trips to the North Kohala bays and beaches. Jennifer was a wonderful host and very helpful with all of our needs. We loved the design of the cottage and the furnishings especially the super comfortable bed and the outdoor shower. Her stained glasswork is extraordinary and the artful decorations and great homegrown tropical fruit really enhanced the experience. Basically everything in the cottage seems designed for comfort and relaxation even the eclectic selection of books to read. We used the kitchen for breakfasts each day and the barbeque for cooking two fish dinners. We enjoyed walking around the picturesque gardens and strolling the Hawi main street. Our stay in the Bamboo cottage was a great part of this Big Island vacation and we very much hope to return again.
We were absolutely delighted with this property and highly recommend it to anyone visiting the Big Island. The location is great, up in Hawi in the Kohala area which means it can be sunny and warm are a bit windy and cool with some rain at times but we found it was all beautiful no matter what the conditions and were happy to get some cool air after spending a day down in the beach heat. The property is beautifully kept and the owners are professional in their gardening and have created their own rain forest type environment. Beautiful! Access to the Kona Coast is easy as well as access to Waimea, Waipio Valley, Hilo, Mauna Kea (stargazer trip!) and from Hilo to Kilauea, the active volcano. Heck you are 10 minutes from the Pololu Lookout, one of the most lovely places on the Island. The cottage is wonderfully set up, very well equipped and Hawi is a delightful small Hawaiian town. The owners are splendid, warm and gracious people. We enjoyed every single minute of our stay and will certainly consider this property again. Highly recommended!!
Jennifer is an amazing hostess! When we had questions about the area, she was extremely helpful! The cottage is beautiful, and you don't even feel like you are sharing the property with anyone else! The cottage is immaculate, and well worth the price! The plush robes were a great touch, the Pololu Valley and Hawi are amazing to visit! There were games to play and lots of supplies in the kitchen, including fresh ground coffee. The outdoor shower was refreshing, and the lanai was amazing, it was great to sit out without being eaten by mosquitoes! Overall, the Bamboo Cottage and Jennifer made our experience unforgettable!
