We are located about 30 minutes from Rapid City and Deadwood, 5 minutes from Nemo and about 20 minutes south of Sturgis in one of the most beautiful areas in the Black Hills. This spectacular canyon road was FULLY paved from Nemo all the way thru Vanocker Canyon a few years ago. This cabin has one bedroom on the main floor, sofa bed in living room, and two twins in the one-half story loft (please see photos of loft on this page). You can see more detailed information for both of our vacation rentals by searching 'Little Elk Cabin & Cottage' under any search engine. Our log cabin was originally built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s when they were working in the Black Hills during the depression era. It was constructed at a nearby lake, completely disassembled by Wolfgang, and moved onto our property in the 1980s. It has been completely renovated and restored to provide the perfect lodging choice for your family vacation, honeymoon or weekend getaway.

Nearby Dalton Lake is stocked with trout every spring and Little Elk Canyon is perfect for a short hike. Wonderland Cave is within minutes and is an interesting stop for all ages. The picturesque town of Nemo offers horseback riding and the historic Brandin' Iron Cafe. The Nemo area is a gorgeous part of the Black Hills as well as scenic Vanocker Canyon. We are within an hour of all major attractions, both north and south, in the Black Hills.

About Wolfgang & Kathleen Schmidt

We have lived in the Black Hills for over 30 years where we have built our own home, our log cabin and new cottage. Wolfgang has built many hiking trails, as well as 16 bridges in the Black Hills, several on the Mickelson Trail as well as Spearfish Canyon.

Wolfgang & Kathleen Schmidt purchased this cabin in 1987

Why Wolfgang & Kathleen Schmidt chose Black Hills

We fell in love with the Vanocker Canyon area when we moved here from California in the late Seventies. We especially enjoy the small town of Nemo 3 miles to the south of us. We built these two vacation rentals so visitors may share this pretty and historical area with the people who live here.

What makes this cabin unique

Our property is very private and you will enjoy all the wildlife that make this area their home. You will hear the bull elk in the fall and see the turkeys nesting in the tall pines nearby.

You may view our website if you scroll down about 5 lines to 'Links to More Information'. There is a link to our 2nd VRBO listing as well.

Perfect Get-Away!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I had the pleasure of staying in the cabin for 4 days. When we arrived the cabin was all ready for us. We were pleased with how clean it was and how inviting! We were new to the area, and anxious to visit all that the Black Hills has to offer. The cabin was centrally located, so we could head a different direction each day and not have long drives to get where we wanted to go. The kitchen was fully equipped and clean, and the rest of the cabin was extremely comfortable. Our purpose of this trip was to rest, relax and enjoy the sights. We loved the wooded setting and the peace and quiet.Lots of wildlife in our yard, which was fun. We have no complaints and would highly recommend this to anyone! Kathleen and Wolfgang are excellent hosts, and we enjoyed visiting with them! We hope to come back next year.

Beautiful rustic cabin in the Black Hills!!!!!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I truly enjoyed our time at Little Elk Cabin it was centrally located from everything. It was in a secluded and peaceful area. The night skies were incredible, especially since we come from a metropolitan area. Everyone we crossed paths with in the area were incredibly friendly and helpful. Kathleen and Wolfgang provided a comfortable and clean stay at the Little Elk Cabin they checked in with us and made our late afternoon early evening arrival smooth and pleasant. Plus the cabin was equipped with everything one could need for their stay. I would definitely recommend this cabin to everyone.

Bullseye! Perfect for sightseeing in the Black Hills.

  • 5 of 5

Wonderfully charming, clean cabin with all the comforts of home. The owners were gracious and attentive in their communications. Perfect for our family of four (mom, dad, 14 year old and 9 year old). Easy access to all areas of the Black Hills, in a very scenic and quiet location. Exceeded our expectations, would not hesitate to visit here again!

Perfect little cabin in a great location

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at Little Elk cabin. The location is good in proximity to Sturgis, Spearfish, Deadwood/Lead. Other towns/attractions are deeper into the hills. The cabin is right off the highway; however it sits down from the road slightly; there are no other homes right in sight and it is surrounded by pines, so it is very nice and quiet. It is not in a complex of multiple is the only one, so you really feel like you are on your own private little property. The cabin itself is very roomy. The loft was just the right size for our two pre-teen girls. Everything was clean and well-kept. The kitchen was stocked with all the dishes, pots & pans, and utensils we needed to cook real meals, as well as foil, plastic wrap, napkins, paper towels and dish soap. We did bring our own paper plates and plastic cups so we (I) weren't always doing dishes. :) Kathleen was helpful on the phone with directions and also questions we had about TV channels. Several times, we had wild turkeys wandering around in the yard. Also, the property was quite large enough to spend some time walking around enjoying nature and taking pictures. Wonderland Cave is just about 3 miles from the cabin and it was a very fun and educational attraction that we all enjoyed. We would definitely recommend the Little Elk cabin.

Highly Recommended

  • 5 of 5

The cabin was perfect for our family of 4 (two children, ages 10 & 12) for an entire week! The kids loved having their own loft and a space of their own, while we loved having our own bedroom and some privacy as well. The kitchen was set up beautifully with everything that we could possibly need. Cooking at the cabin and not eating out saved us a ton of money. We did bring a crock-pot along with us so we could have some of our meals cooking while we were gone. (I'd recommend stopping for groceries in Rapid City as that's the closest location with the most reasonable prices.) We had a doe and two large bucks (in velvet) come up to the cabin while sitting outside on the patio. The best part was the temperatures -- no matter how hot it was in the rest of the area cities, the cabin was always a steady 70*. The cabin has air conditioning, but we never felt the need to use it. Our only complaint, if I absolutely had to find one, is that the curtains are not very thick so the sun shined in every morning waking us up. We solved the problem by hanging towels over the windows in both bedrooms... but that wasn't the worst thing in the world either. Overall, we loved our trip and will definitely be returning!
