Guestbook comments from the owner

Thanks, Don. What a great place! The inside was immaculate and cozy and I loved the kitchen. The patio and pond made me feel like I was on a tropical island and then I walked out the gate and I was on Abbot Kinney Boulevard. It was amazing and everything was perfect. I can't wait to come back. Evelyn, Ontario, Canada

Fantastic!

  • 5 of 5

My Daughter asked if we could rent this place everytime we visit Venice because, "it's perfect." This about sums it up. The cottage, spotless and well maitained, is a block away from Abbot Kinney, the main hip shopping-coffee bar-night life street; and a few blocks from the beach. The private outdoor was a key selling point for me. It served as my early morning refuge for coffee and writing.

I cannot say enough about Don our host. He was friendly and courteous, and always made himself available to answer any questions. He made things easy. His contract was clear, conscise and professional; and the welcome packet was filled with useful information about the area, restaurants, shopping and places to see.

There is no doubt, "Charlie Chaplin's Old House" is our home away from home in Venice, CA.

Thank you Don!

Owner's Response: Wow, what an eloquent way to sum up a guest review. I'm honored. I do go to a lot of effort in making the booking process and the actual stay as easy for vacationers as possible. In terms of the location? That was just luck. But, I did do remodeling to make the place comfortable and modern. Hope to see you again soon. Don

I want to go back!

Don is super easy to work with. House is exactly as described or better. Everything is organized and labeled for convenience. House is well stocked and very, very, very clean. The garage comes with openers for your car so it is very convenient to pull into. It is tiny, we have an mid sized SUV and BARELY fit. But, we did fit and really appreciated that convenience. The furniture in the family room is all reclining (nice after a long day of playing on the beach). TV's in all the rooms with movie channels and cable. We relined back and watched several movies while we were there. Stove is gas. Pots, pans, cookie sheets, plates, silverware, etc. all nice, organized and at your fingertips. Don left lists of grocery stores very close to the house (5 - 8 min drive). The bathroom is gorgeous with dual shower heads, skylights, etc. The main street, is a block away and on the nearest corner is the ice cream shop, Salt and Straw. There is a long line at this shop from open to close, so we would step on the front porch, look over the fence and wait for a shorter line and then run over. LOVED THAT!! One of the best perks to this house. :) There are several great places to eat along that street, as well, with quite a variety of choices. We loved strolling down the street and finding a place for a late night appetizer and a glass of wine. Several great coffee shops for early morning strolls. It is about a 15 minute walk to the beach. We were glad we brought a cooler with wheels that we could load up and pull down with us. It took us about 15 min to drive to the airport and 7 to drive to Santa Monica. Venice is pretty centrally located and has fairly easy access to all the main roads so we had no problem getting to Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Laguna, Malibu, the Dodgers Stadium, etc. Don has electric key pads on the outside gates and all the house doors. It was very convenient to tell him our pin number and he set that as our key for our stay. Anyone from our group could come and go as they wanted. There is not central air. There are huge ceiling fans in all the rooms. We stayed during an usually hot stretch so it was a little stuffy when we first got back each day and when we were cooking. At night is was cool. We aren't used to "road noise" at all, where we live. So we did need to get ear plugs for the early morning times. I wouldn't say it is overly loud, just unusual for us. We truly enjoyed our stay at this house. GREAT HOUSE!! HOPE TO STAY AGAIN!

Owner's Response: Thank you Cammy. That was an intense and comprehensive guest review. I'm glad you were happy with "Charlie Chaplin's Old house". I would hate to read your guest review had you not been happy. Thank you also for mentioning that I am easy to work with and the place is organized and labeled. I feel like that is very helpful to vacationers when they first arrive. I do everything I can to make sure everything goes smoothly for the vacationer. Including being present during the cleaning and overseeing it (that's, without a doubt, the hardest part of the job). I hope you come back again soon. Don

Location Location Location

We spent a week at Charlie Chaplin's cottage with our 8 year old daughter. The location couldn't be closer to the funky shops, great restaurants and cafes on Abbott Kinney Blvd and the cottage is as described and pictured. The garden area is very private and a great spot to relax and just read a book. The gates are locked so our daughter just ran around outside on her own which was great. The cottage is well appointed and organized. Our favourite restaurants were Gjueliana, Tom's cafe, Lemonade and Dudley Market which is down by the beach a few blocks north. We will definitely come back to stay when we are next in LA.

Sunshine in the Winter!

  • 5 of 5

The Charlie Chaplin bungalow near Abbott Kinney in Venice was all as advertised, a sweet but compact home for us for two glorious months in warm and sunny southern California. Don made sure everything was there for us and in good working order. Although it's on a busy corner near the "happening" AK strip, the bungalow itself is very private , surrounded by a fence , palm trees, tropical foliage with a pretty garden area in the front to enjoy the weather. And we did! It's a bit of a walk to the grocery/ pharmacy, but a quick drive and there is a convenient bus. We loved walking to the beach every day and exploring the 70's vibe of the Venice Beach area. We are gelato lovers and there is a wonderful gelato place so near you can see it from the front porch as well as a new high end specialty ice cream store that opened across the street for more eclectic ( and expensive) tastes in the frozen treats. The cottage was charming, comfortable and convenient! The picture Don posts says it all! A beautiful winter retreat for us! Thank you Don for your SoCal hospitality, we hope to return! Note: The date calendar on this site would not work, so our arrival date was actually 1/1/2016 ( not 3/1/2016) and we stay for two months.

Owner's Response: Thank you Sallie for a wonderful review. I really appreciated your stay of 2 months. I get a little exhausted from the average, one week turnover. I'm also pleased that we had unseasonably warm weather while the weather where you are from was unseasonably cold and snowy. You timed it perfectly. Stay warm for the rest of the winter and please come back again, Don

Cute house in a fabulous location

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed at this house for Thanksgiving week, so that we could be closer to family. This house is cute, great for 2-4 people, and in a wonderful location. Easy access to Abbot Kinney, the Canals, the beaches....we walked every day. The outdoor space is wonderful. Even though you are in a busy area, it is private and secluded, along with being beautiful. Ate some meals out there, had wine and read, very peaceful within a busy city. The owner of the property is very responsive to any questions or needs. And the private parking space is great - never had to worry about finding street parking. Would stay here again without question.

incredible house! Perfect getaway!

  • 5 of 5

The Charlie Chaplin house was ideal in all factors. We immediately felt at home! I liked how the house is set up, huge living and dining areas! The bedrooms are not next to one another to offer wonderful privacy. We enjoyed the totally fenced in yard and security gates on both streets.
