About Barbara & Bill Evans

We live in the Philadelphia area and have been coming to Mount Desert Island (MDI) since 1991. We love the character of Bass Harbor village--the slower pace of life here, the sound of the bell buoys on the water, and the unique beauty and history of MDI. There's no place in the world like it!

Barbara & Bill Evans purchased this house in 1991

Why Barbara & Bill Evans chose Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Island

Bass Harbor is a active fishing village with a mix of vacationers and year-round residents. We love that our side of the island--the 'Quiet Side'--is not busy or commercial, but has held onto the original character of the area.

Great Experience!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in the house in August 2012 and had a wonderful time! We arrived with our four children and found the place to be quite spacious for our family. The description of the property and the pictures were very accurate. The place was very clean and we had everything we needed. We were extremely close to the Bass Harbor Lighthouse and were even able to walk across the street to order lobsters and other seafood right from the fishermen. The owner was even gracious enough to lend us his lobster pots and he even cooked the lobsters for us! There was a big backyard to enjoy, much to our boys' delight. And it was close enough to Acadia NP and Bar Harbor, which all made for a wonderful vacation!

The Best Time Ever!!

  • 5 of 5

We arrived on Sunday evening and could not have been more excited about our drive to Bass Harbor. Our vacation rental was located in a large historic home owned by Barb and Bill Evans. The house was constructed in the mid 1800's. The home is been sectioned off converting the back half into its own private living quarters. This charming rental has a very large kitchen, two bedrooms, two baths, living and laundry room. The rental is complete with wifi and cable tv. The best asset of the home are the owners Barb and Bill Evans. Barb and Bill have been living at their summer home for the past 27 years. They have a wealth of knowledge about the local establishments and historic parts of Mt. Desert Island and Acadia. Fresh lobsters can be purchased across the street, and if you need help, Bill graciously volunteers his time to show you how to prepare them. Bass Harbor is a beautiful, picturesque harbor town. As you look out across the bay you see what you have always imagined....lobster boats, lobster buoys, sailboats, and boat docks. The village homes are complimented by landscaping arrangements full of a vast variety of delightful wild flowers. Across the harbor you can see the town of Bernard nestled on a hill displaying it's own small town charm. The best thing about Bass Harbor is that it is removed from all of the hustle and bustle found in the other harbor town communities on Mt. Desert Island. It is so much more relaxing than having to deal with the traffic and commercialism found in the nearby towns. After you have had a day out touring Acadia National Park, Bass Harbor, Southwest Harbor and Northeast Harbor you can come back to Barb and Bill Evan's rental for a relaxing evening, take a walk around the bay, or eat at the Seafood Katch. I would not stay anywhere else....hoping to return for another great vacation!

Peaceful Bass Harbor

  • 5 of 5

My family of four had a delightful stay. The owners are a lovely couple who are available if necessary but are themselves busy with their own concerns, leaving us to feel perfectly at ease and at home.

It felt as though we were staying in a friend's family vacation home. The rental house isn't modern in its arrangement and appliances but it is charming and very comfortable. It is bright and sunny and had everything we needed: washer/dryer, two bathrooms (bathtub and shower stall), a spacious kitchen, the living area wasn't large but it was just fine for us, and heat when the nights were cold.

With only two bedrooms (each with two twin beds), four people is probably ideal for the house. Pushing together the two twin beds in the larger bedroom, might then fit two adults and a small child and still have two twin beds in the second bedroom.

We loved the deck that is accessible through sliding glass doors in the living room. From inside, the living room view is of lawn and trees but outside on the deck is a view of the peaceful, beautiful harbor-not a sweeping view but all the same, a lovely view. We sat there every morning with our coffee and a book. The house faces west, into the beautiful sunsets. Our children (8 & 5) played in the lawn.

Days and nights are quiet and peaceful. There are neighboring homes and businesses so we didn't feel isolated. The Ravenswood woodcarving studio was next door. A convenient and tiny post office was obscured through the trees in the back. Down the long driveway across the street is a local seafood restaurant and a four minute walk brings you to a more casual restaurant. Within walking distance is a ferry to Swans Island and the Bass Harbor Cruise Company. Folks are free to walk on the nearby docks and enjoy the view of the harbor and mountains. There is a fun fireworks display once a week during the summer.

Bass Harbor Lighthouse is nearby and it's a quick drive to Southwest Harbor where there are many restaurants and shops. Take the scenic route to Southwest Harbor and stop at the Seawall, a spectacular rocky shore open to the sea which is magnificent and almost terrifyingly beautiful. It's a twelve minute drive to freshwater Echo lake (part of Acadia National Park) for a swim or to hike, etc.. Away from the crowds in Bar Harbor (25 minute drive), this part of Mount Desert Island is ideal for a quiet, beautiful Maine experience.

We had a lovely stay and hope to return in the future.

We stayed there for a week. My 3 years-old started to call here 'Home'.

We made breakfast & dinner everyday and stayed in Acadia NP for the whole day.

When we came back, feel really like 'back home'.

great great experience

Our Stay in Bass Harbor

  • 5 of 5

Our stay in Maine was wonderful! The owners of the front house were very helpful and hospitable. One of the highlights of our stay was when they came over to show us how to cook lobster! The property was clean and well maintained and roomy enough for our family of 5. We were very comfortable and this is an awesome location! We had a view of the Bass Harbor and we were only 15 minutes from Acadia National Park. We had a ton of fun and would consider staying at this location again if we make it over to Maine again!
