Come paddle along the beautiful shores or bring your boat and explore over 7 miles of pristine Maranacook Lake. It wouldn’t be long before you spot a loon, osprey, bald eagle, great blue heron or other wildlife. The water quality of Maranacook Lake is exceptional, making for great swimming, fishing and other recreational uses.
My home is located on the east shore so you will enjoy beautiful sunsets. The open concept main floor features great views of the lake from the large living room and from the informal dining area. It also includes a spacious kitchen, formal dining room, and an entry room (with laundry and half bath). From the main floor step out onto the 40 foot wooden deck overlooking the lake: there always is a gentle breeze, keeping it remarkably free of flying insects. A concrete patio (under the deck, at daylight basement level) also runs the entire length of the house. The gazebo is located on the lower deck that offers a table for four and additional seating.
The game room (24 x 16) in the daylight basement offers yet another view of the lake! Enjoy a game of ping pong or move it out of the way for other games. The game room also includes a home theater, and sofa/bed.
The upper level is where all three bedrooms and full bath are located. The master bedroom has a large picture window overlooking the lake with a queen-size bed. The medium size bedroom also has a view of the lake (through the treetops!), with a queen and twin size bed. The third bedroom (largest) offers a full and futon couch (full bed). All three bedrooms have AC. The full bathroom has a separate shower and tub, and two sinks.
My husband grew up on Lake Maranacook on the Readfield side. His family owned one of the tourist homes so you can imagine the fondness that he and his brother had for this lake. All of their 7 daughters grew up with amazing stories of family, games and this lake in an era of peacefulness, family games and playing in and around the lake.
The week was selected, daughters and kids arrived and settled in. With Dennis's attentive hosting and thoughtful nuances (towels, dishes, games, deck chairs, BBQ, TVs, kayaks, life preservers, etc) they felt like they were "home" immediately. Then the rest of us would arrive and come and go daily! MEMORIES....we were across the lake from and able to "see" the familiar areas around Tallwood and the former Townsend Farm Inn. This meant home and
and heart to all of us....words can not express what a delight and comfort this week was.
We all made it to the lake daily...and the youmgest ones...well....its not an exageration to say, that everytime any adult said, "I'm going down to the water," there would be a mad sprint for suits and towels and the kids would beat them down the path!
When we'd tire of the sunshine (who knew?) we had plenty of room to spread out in the house. We had TVs, ping pong, board games....but Grandma's and grandkids' favorite was dominoes on the dining room table!
Groceries were nearby....and so was Pat's Pizza in Augusta (another family tradition) and plenty of places to stop for an evening ice cream....oh...and lobster...the traditional Maine feast?...of course!....our only request from Dennis for next year?.....a BIG 'ol LOBSTER pot for the kitchen!
There have been hundreds of photos to share and weeks later, the family is still smiling and sharing the new Lake Maranacook memories. Another topic is now included, though......what new memories lie in store for us NEXT year! As my husband often says, "The game's a foot!" We are certainly booking early for another amazing summer blast so the kids will have their own Maranacook stories to add to ours.
Kudos to Dennis and this wonderful and homey home and location!
THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES!
If I could give 10 stars I would!! The house was amazing, and has such a great layout. Several times during our stay there we had 10-12 people (staying and/or visiting) and it never felt crowded. From the large kitchen (with everything you could possibly need other than food), the informal dining area looking out at the lake, to the huge living room, the formal dining area with seating for 8, the game room downstairs playing ping pong or watching a movie, to the huge deck with a grill and 2 seating areas, the gazebo under the deck, and finally to the dock down on the lake. The lake is amazing, the sunsets are off the charts beautiful, and I saw plenty of loons and herons. The lake is so much fun to explore with the available kayaks. The only thing better than the house and/or lake would be Dennis himself. He was always available, and checked in to make sure we didn’t have any questions or need anything. This was the best vacation my family has ever had, and everything about it exceeded all our expectations!! We will be back next year for sure!!
First off I have to say Dennis was a great host! We had constant communication throughout our whole trip. My mother is from Maine and every couple of years we try to get back. I needed a house that was spacious, since there was going to be 8 of us there for 2 weeks. This house did not disappoint. I really liked how open the house was. There was plenty of room for the 8 of us, plus the guest that would stop by. The kitchen had everything we needed and then some. There's a tv with some gaming systems, which was great for everyone. The downstairs room was great for the kids. They would go down and play legos and we also played some ping pong down there. The 3 rooms upstairs were great. We slept 8 comfortably. There is only 1 bathroom upstairs, but it wasn't a problem considering how big it was. The kids loved the big bathtub! The deck outside has a bbq, which we used quite a few times. The deck overlooks the lake and has a great view.. Lots of time was spent on the deck chatting away. The lake was amazing! The sunsets amazing! There were 4 kayaks for our use, which was great. The lake itself was nice and clean. We had stayed at a different lake our last trip and it was not nearly as nice as this lake. We spend a lot of time in the water and enjoyed every minute of it!
This property is a wonderful and versatile place. It is spacious and allows for our family to thoughtfully spread out and have meaningful space. It is peaceful - at night you see beautiful sunsets and hear the grace of the loons. The kayaks allow for fun exploration of a diverse lake of flora and fauna - especially to the right towards the island and shallow zone. The house has all the creature comforts of home - nice sized bathroom, garden tub, solid shower, comfortable beds, plush and cushy carpet throughout and a really decent size kitchen. The deck allows for shady naps, quiet morning coffee and lively dinners. There is no bumpy camp road that is 100 miles from civilization - there is a paved, nice walking/biking surface that is really close to a grocery store! This is the perfect family spot!! There is a nice spot for young kids to wade around and look at minnows, splash around and learn to swim. Highly recommend! Dennis is super attentive, too! This is a family favorite for us... My daughter says "we have such great family memories here!" Thanks for opening up such a great spot!!
Love the big kitchen, well equipped, lots of space. Hard to choose where to eat: at the big dining room table, the deck overlooking the lake, or the gazebo with romantic lighting. The views of the lake are fantastic, and it's very private. Kids and adults loved the dock and the four kayaks; easy to go for an early morning or early evening paddle without any hassle. Parents loved the first floor laundry. Everything was very clean.
We were very pleased with everything advertised on this home. It met and exceeded our expectations. We enjoyed the location from the house, the deck and waterfront. The owner was fantastic and even met our request for a lobster pot! We had multiple family members with us during the week and there was plenty of room for everyone. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and look forward to a return visit.
All within the immediate area (15-20 minutes). Bike, walk or boat (Town's Boat Landing 2.5 miles) into Downtown Winthrop and enjoy a homemade ice cream at Tubby's Ice Cream and Sandwich Shop. Catch a live play at the Monmouth Theatre. The City of Augusta offers shopping malls, movie theater, restaurants, and historic sites. Just south of Augusta and also along the Kennebec River is Hallowell. In Hallowell you will find great restaurants, pubs, antique shops, hike in Vaughn Woods or get on the Kennebec River Bike Rail trail. The rail trail goes along the Kennebec River from Augusta to Gardiner.
Winthrop is located in central Maine, in about 45 minutes, you can visit the famous L.L. Bean and numerous other outlet stores in Freeport. In an hours drive you can head east and visit Maine coastal towns and shorelines or travel to the west for mountain hikes and scenic views. There are many day trip opportunities but at the end of the day you will enjoy coming back to relax and enjoy the sunset at your lakeside stay.
