Greenville log cabin
Our stay in this cabin was ok...we were there to visit family in the area and it was a close location for that. The cabin was clean and had clean linens on beds and clean towels layed out on each bed. The cabin itself is very basic which was ok for us because we could rely on our family for our needs, like a blender for making margaritas. For anyone renting that would be planning to utilize the kitchen they may find it lacking. We did try to use the oven to cook an appetizer but got an awful smell once we turned it on. We think the smell may be from mice that may have made a nest in it. We turned it off and chose not to do any cooking in the oven. This would have been a major problem for anyone needing to use the oven during their stay, we luckily were able to make alternative plans. The view of the lake was best from the top deck (off the bedroom) as the trees are thick in the yard obstructing the view from the lower deck. We moved the outside table and chairs to the upper deck while we were there and put them back when we were leaving. The biggest disappointment was that the screen doors on the upper deck were all ripped so we were unable to have them open in the evening. The weather was very hot during our stay and the ceiling fan in the upstairs 2nd bedroom where our daughter slept was not working. It would have been great to be able to sleep with the doors open if the screen doors were adequate. I think for summer rentals working screens and ceiling fans is a must!
View is beautiful, driveway is awful
The bad: you can't park in the driveway -- you have to park on Lily Bay Road, a main route with tractor trailers going up and down, in a pull-off above the house. The driveway is steep and covered with somewhat loose rock. You have to cart your suitcases and stuff up and down it. If you have small children or are old enough to have any kind of mobility issues (as I do), this is not the place for you. The not-so-great: none of the three of us was comfortable on any of the mattresses. My 20-something son was uncomfortable enough on his that he decided to sleep on the couch instead. . The kitchen is serviceable enough, but we couldn't find a broiling pan for some steaks we'd brought with us and the tabletop charcoal grill on the deck was pretty useless. And you're not likely to encounter this problem, but it was dead fly season in October when we were there. The downstairs was clean, but there were dozens upon dozens of dead flies upstairs. (This is not an exaggeration.) I was pretty angry about that on the first night, but we vacuumed them all up and chalked it up to experience. We were out all of the following day and when got back and we went upstairs there were dozens and dozens of dead flies again! Nothing the owner or the property manage could do about that! So we vacuumed them up again and chalked it up to visiting the woods in October. The wonderful: the view of Moosehead was just magnificent! I picked the cabin because of the view and I was not at all disappointed. While I would not go back because of the access issue, I expect that anybody who doesn't mind parking on a main drag and going up and down a steep driveway will love staying here. Sitting on the upper deck and watching the light change over the lake at sunset was worth the other hassles. It is a beautiful, beautiful spot!
Glad you enjoyed our spectacular view. As you noted, the mountainside, and the driveway, is quite steep, giving us the view. that is why we installed a parking pad adjacent to the Lilly Bay Road. when you asked, prior to booking, about using the driveway with an ATV trailer I replied "you will not be able to park in the driveway - we have a parking pad beside the road and there is trailer parking at the ATV trailhead". Also my housekeeper drives her older Hyundai up and down the driveway - no trailer - of course! thanks for your detailed and thoughtful review.
Million Dollar Vista at this log Cabin on Moosehead Lake
My family and I never tired of this view on Blair Hill towards Moosehead Lake! From misty sunrises to radiant sunsets--this location is priceless! Close proximity to the heart of Greenville, the cabin has your basic needs and plenty of space for a family. The owner is very gracious and spends time sharing information about the house and area. We enjoyed the town 4th of July parade and riding the Katahdin boat. We loved sitting out on the decks to paint or have a drink. If you like to hike, the area has a great mountain pinnacle challenge. We enjoyed hiking Big Moose, Lily Bay State Park and the basin of Katahdin in Baxter State Park. We hope to come back and hike Mount Kineo and spot moose again. What a special place!
Glad you enjoyed your stay. Most guests enjoy their stay and get to experience views and wildlife not available in a Theme Park. (Not many Moose sightings at Disney!)
Rustic comfort with an incredible view!
This property truly has a million $ view! Moosehead Lake is visible from nearly every window! During our early Oct stay the leaves were turning - Amazing! The cabin is comfy, cozy, and spacious - good for at least a family of 4. The furniture and cabin features are rustic, yet inviting.....but, don't expect a stay at the Hilton. This is a place where you can put your feet up and completely relax.......just what we were looking for. AND - there are so many things to do, you will not be bored. Sail with the "Kate" around the lake, visit the bogs, ponds, and Lily Bay Park. Don't miss Kokadjo - a hunters camp complete with an unmarked Trading Post/restaurant (we watched a pair of hunters weigh-in their moose trophy during lunch......extraordinary) all within a short drive from the property. Also, Greenville town is very close. You'll find, shops, laundry, grocery, pharmacy, an excellent antiquarian bookstore, library, restaurants, etc. Be sure to give yourself plenty of time for driving about........AND, get to-and-fro before dark. No streetlights, meandering moose, and limited signage in Maine, can make finding your way challenging. Use your GPS. Be mindful, however, that even "Siri" can be wrong. "She" was a 1000 feet off in locating the cabin the first time. If we had arrived any later we would have had difficulty. Also, use the street parking pad in front of the property........don't attempt the driveway. It is steep and uneven...... the ONLY fault of the property. The owner is a pleasure to work with and is willing to share his wealth of knowledge about the area. Just ask him. We recommend this rental and hope to return.
Glad you Californians enjoyed your stay in the Moosehead Lake Region. Visiting in Late May or early June provides the best Moose watching as they are feeding on the early greens along the roads. Working on a few minor improvements this Winter - maybe even get Internet access - it is coming to the area!
Moosewatch Safarais - something you can't do at Disney!
