Del Mar is one of the most beautiful, romantic resort beach towns in the world. Here you'll find world class restaurants, activities, including the exciting Del Mar Racetrack and San Diego County Fair, as well as beach and ocean water sports, and nearby San Diego, La Jolla and North County attractions (see listed activities).

Disneyland is just under two hours away, Sea World, the Zoo and Legoland all are within a 30-minute drive without traffic. And Torrey Pines' famous state park for scenic hiking is a ten-minute drive, too.

Del Mar has a colorful history filled with excitement, pleasure and even has a song recorded by Bing Crosby. Bing, Pat O'Brien and their friends, such as Jimmy Durante, turned the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club into one of the most beautiful and prestigious organizations in the entire racing world.

Del Mar is two square miles along the Northern San Diego County coast, best known for its beaches, fairgrounds and the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club 'Where the turf meets the surf.'

With beautiful sandstone canyons interspersed with hillsides of custom homes, and astonishing sunsets, the romantic village of Del Mar is a global destination point for visitors, vacationers and residents alike.

About Bruce McDermott

We are the McDermott kids.

Our earliest memories are at Del Mar beach running along the shore, and dodging the incoming waves like the sandpipers in the early '60s.

We would drag our inflatable canvas surf mats with rubberized ends into the waves to ride them. This was before surfboards made their appearance in the numbers we see now, yet it was how we learned to read the waves, know where to take off and get the best rides.

The lifeguards seem to have always been there – the red trucks slowly cruising the shore, the towers at 17th & 25th streets, providing a sense of security and safety to us young waterdogs.

This is also where we first tried surfing at 15th Street. It is a passion a few of us have to this day. We've surfed, bodysurfed, fished, skin- and scuba-dived, sailed, and Zodiaked through the surf. My brother and I even waterskied on surfboards behind our Zodiak in the slough west of the highway by the racetrack. We basically grew up in the waters of Del Mar.

Bruce McDermott purchased this house in 1972

Why Bruce McDermott chose San Diego County

Our parents, Bill and Phyllis, started coming to Del Mar in the '50s from a Los Angeles suburb because their own landlords owned a couple of duplexes - one on 28th and the other on 24th streets. They'd visit for a week each summer. They were hooked! (And so were we!)

Their first purchase was a small house on 23rd Street in 1962 and then another a few years later, then this duplex on 25th Street in 1972. My brother and I added on two bedrooms, a bath and 900 square feet as students in 1976 (all through Del Mar's Design Review Board, permit hell, etc.)

After our Mom passed in 2010, we again updated everything: roof, windows, flooring, carpeting, kitchen, furnishings and paint to make it the home away from home that it is.

What makes this house unique

The beach, a few minutes from the property, is a romantic place for couples to stroll at sunset or in the morning with their coffee from Starbuck’s or a nice oceanfront lunch or dinner at the Poseidon. It is also ideal for vigorous jogging or running, and for many beach sports like volleyball, Frisbee, paddleball, surf-fishing, skim boarding, swimming, body surfing, Boogie boarding, SUP and boardsurfing.

Many of these activities are limited to certain hours or locations based on the season and crowds, but you can almost always find something fun or relaxing to do here.

Finally, it is an excellent place to drag a chair, bring a good book (or Kindle), plug in your iPod (iPhone/iPad, etc!) and enjoy the calming effects of the Pacific waves against the white sands of the beach.

Del Mar Beach House

  • 5 of 5

Great location for seeing San Diego. Quick walk to beach. Close to downtown Delmar. Easy to get to other sights in the San Diego area. We had a girls trip of 6 women. Good space for such a group. Great hang out space inside and out. Patio area with fire pit was extra bonus. Very well stocked throughout. Clean and well cared for home. We had a wonderful time and truly enjoyed our accommodations. Owner was very responsive and helpful. On-sight property manager was a helpful and very thorough in showing us the property.

Perfect Del Mar Beach Home for our Family and Friends

  • 5 of 5

This beach home has it all! Quick walk to the beach, close to the beautiful center of Del Mar and in the center of all the goodness that San Diego has to offer. It had plenty of room inside and out for our party of 8 - two families of 4 - we never felt cramped. This home was a perfect base for exploring! We really enjoyed:

The 25th Street Del Mar Beach - We spent most days on the beach at 25th Street enjoying the soft sand, boogie boarding in the Pacific and the gorgeous evening sunsets. Having a lifeguard on hand helped us relax while our kids (8 and 11) swam in the water. The house had everything we needed for the beach - oodles of towels, beach toys, umbrellas, cooler and a beach cart.

The 17th Street Del Mar Beach - A short 15 minute walk form the house via the gorgeous waterfront homes gets you to the center of Del Mar and the 17th Street Del Mar Beach. Our kids took surfing lessons from incredibly friendly surf instructors. A short walk up brought us to abundant shops and restaurants and great views of the Pacific.

La Jolla - Driving through Torrey Pines was easy and got us easy access to the La Jolla where we had awesome gelato and visited the Sea Lions.

San Diego Zoo - A short drive to the San Diego zoo allowed us to get to the Zoo right when they opened. There were little lines to the see the Pandas and baby gorilla. This zoo fantastic and can't be missed! We ran out of time but next time would love to try out the Safari park.

Coronado Island - After the zoo, we enjoyed a great Mexican meal at Miguel's and then headed to the Hotel Del Coronado for our private fire pit on the beach. We were greeted by a friendly host who offered unlimited s'mores to our kids and retrieved adult beverages all while stocking the fire.

LEGOLAND California - This park is so close to the house. The kids loved this park and the adults loved Las Vegas and Star Wars mini-land.

All during our stay the property manager, Tracy, made us feel welcome and ensured we had all that we needed for a comfortable stay. We were so sad to return home and hope to return soon so that we can do things we couldn't because we ran out of time - Take the Coaster train into downtown San Diego, Disneyland, San Diego Safari Park, Torrey Pines Hike, Mission Bay and more beaching and surfing!

Our family had a beautiful vacation in this Del Mar beach home!!

  • 5 of 5

This home was located very very close to the beach and lifeguards. It was spacious and had everything we needed to enjoy our time at the beach, cook or bbq at home. TV's in most rooms, fire pit and beach toys in the backyard on a very quiet culdesac. There is a train nearby, we noticed the sound the first day but never mentioned it again, didn't bother anyone in our family of 9. There are fans throughout the house that could potentially drown out the train noise but we did not need it. Overall it was a very quiet beautiful quaint home and the train is part of the charm. Del Mar was close to so many fun things, Disneyland was a pretty easy drive, Legoland, Sea World, San Diego Zoo, Safari, Botanical Gardens, downtown SD, Coronado, Mt Soledad Memorial, mission churches, LaJolla and Del Mar shopping villages. We could not believe how friendly everyone was in the area and the owners/management were very accommodating. Thank you for sharing your lovely family home!

This is a wonderful house, in a perfect location. My family and I, along with another family recently completed a three night stay. The house is in excellent condition, inside and out, with plenty of indoor space, and multiple outdoor spaces for relaxation, meals, and conversation. The walk to the beach is less than two blocks. Boogie boards, surf boards, towels, chairs, umbrellas, and sand toys for the kids are all available. I cannot say enough good things about this place! I would definitely return.
