This 2 bedroom year-round house is fully furnished and has a complete kitchen with all amenities. The back of the house has a large deck facing the beautiful Menunketusuck River and a private boardwalk and dock. The two-level deck has a complete set of outdoor furnishings including a Weber grill. You will be surrounded by ferns, arborvitae and plantings of lilies, roses and hydrangea.
Located on the river, just above where it empties into Long Island Sound. the cottage's dock has two kayaks that you can take up the river to the nearby National Wildlife Sanctuary or paddle down to the picturesque islands in LIS.
The cottage has an open plan, with the functional kitchen flowing into the living area. From the living room, porch or deck you can watch the sun rise, admire the sailboats going by, or marvel at the moon reflected in the waters of the Sound.
Relax on one of the chaise lounges, or go for a bike ride along the shore on one of our bikes, or walk along the private beach (a two minute walk away), or swim in the river or sound, or paddle a kayak, or visit a local attraction (steam train, Gillette castle, winery, etc.), or go fishing.. there are many more options.
This cottage has been a summer retreat for the Murphy Family for over 50 years. The kids spent their days boating in the river, playing on the sandbar and crabbing in the creek. The adults soaked up the sun, biked, swam, kayaked or shopped at the outlets. This is the first year that we are offering the cottage for weekly rentals, so we don't have any reviews to share.
Rudy Reiblein purchased this cottage in 1963
Great location on the water and near the beach at a bargain price.
Sit on the deck and watch the sailboats go by while the kids play on the sandbar at low tide.
Such a beautiful and distinguished home, with decor and exquisiteness true to its surroundings and history. An elegant, yet simple floor layout with picturesque views of the Menunketesuck River in your backyard - or rather your front yard!
While we had some things planned for the week, we quickly found ourselves neglecting to leave the property - it was just too relaxing to be elsewhere or running around all day. There's a sense of peace about this home, a raw beauty that allows oneself to just let go and really enjoy the moments from watching the boats in the marina to observing the habitat of birds from Osprey and Egress to Hummingbirds. For the first time, I can truly say that we vacationed by relaxation and not by filling our days with busyness and running from one place to the next.
Our 2 daughters (mid-teens) had a wonderful experience as well. We Kayaked up and down the river with the provided kayaks, visited the private beach which is just a 2 minute walk down the street and they too, took in some well needed downtime. The sunroom is a beautiful little room to catch up with reading, taking a nap, playing games, or just simply being. The deck is a wonderful outdoor space to spend time with your family while taking in the sights and sounds while the dock is also a nice little getaway, my wife and I found ourselves grabbing chairs, a bottle of wine, walking down to the dock and catching some sun during the day and watching the stars at night.
Rudy and Diane have thought of everything from a fully stocked Kitchen to board games and linens and more. So we over packed somewhat not expecting many of the available amenities that were provided. It was a pleasure grilling and cooking at the house. I'd like to thank you both for your hospitality as well as sharing your wonderful house with us!
I had the most wonderful time at this cottage! It really is as picturesque as it appears in the photos! The generous-sized back deck opens up to a sweet little bay nestled between the Long Island Sound and a bird sanctuary. The owner was very generous in lending us his kayaks and row boat, as well as beach equipment. Kitchen is well stocked with a modern grill out back, and house is delightfully decorated with lots of comfy spots to nestle up and read a book. Owner is communicative and very helpful. Highlights for us included the local beach, just a couple minutes walk from the cottage, and the outdoor shower. Westbrook is a sleepy little town, but perfect if you're looking to decompress!
