About the property

River cottage with private beach near Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Busch Gardens

Note: Weekly discount rate: Winter - $1200; Spring and Fall - $1300, Summer - $1500. Taxes are included in our rates.

Our waterfront beach cottage sits on a bluff overlooking the James River and Jamestown Island, with steps down to your private beach. You will have the privacy of a cottage and will be directly across the river from Jamestown and Williamsburg. The view of the river is wide open (about a mile to the left is the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry Dock and to the right is Cobham Bay).

Watch spectacular sunrises over the river from the deck or the air conditioned/heated front porch. After enjoying a day of history in Jamestown, Williamsburg, or Yorktown, Busch Gardens, Water Country, or some of the other attractions Virginia has to offer, come back to relax on the 'rivah' in the privacy of your cottage. Sometimes just watching eagles and ospreys fish, playing on the beach or in the river, or kayaking is just what is needed after a busy day. Or you can just spend a day having fun on the rivah!

The James River here at the cottage is tidal water and is clean. The tide comes in and goes out very slowly, so it is great for children to play in. It is partly salty and partly freshwater. There is not a drop-off.

You will have your privacy here. There are no houses behind the cottages. Once you leave the paved road, you are 0.4 mile down a lane from the start of a perfect vacation.

The free car ferry belongs to the VA Department of Transportation and runs 24 hours a day. When landing at Jamestown, Williamsburg is 4 miles straight down the road (about 5 min.), and it takes about 15 minutes to get to Busch Gardens. Yorktown is a little beyond Williamsburg. The ferry dock on this side is one mile from the cottage.

Two kayaks, a canoe, and adult and children's life preservers are provided. Also provided are beach chairs, beach umbrella, cooler, and beach towels.

Linens, coffee maker (with filters, coffee, sugar, creamer), dinnerware, silverware, glassware, cookware, cooking utensils, paper plates and cups, paper towels, toilet paper, napkins, aluminum foil, plastic wrap, baggies, cooking oil, basic spices, mustard, mayonnaise, ketchup, soap, hand soap, dish detergent, towels, dish towels and cloths, Tide, dryer sheets and trash bags are provided.

The Bathroom has a tub with a shower. Hair dryer, towels, wash cloths, soap, shampoo, hand soap, toilet paper, and first aid kit are provided.

In the backyard there is a gas grill ready for your barbecue.

The living area has satellite TV (DIRECTV) and a DVD player. DVD's and books are provided. MLB Extra Innings is provided for you baseball fans!

All of the bedrooms are equipped with bed linens, extra blanket, a clock, and a flashlight. One bedroom has a TV (Antenna) and DVD player.

Brochures for tourists attractions are provided.

It was wonderful - more than we were expecting.

  • 5 of 5

The cabin was spotless, & the gracious hosts made sure we had everything we needed, including treats for our fur babies. The views are stunning, & the location couldn't be better. We loved it!

Simply great! and gracious, too.

  • 5 of 5

Everything we were looking for, and more. Even better than the pictures. It's just the two of us, but somehow we need space. Space for books, space for doing jigsaws, space for photography equipment, space enough to cook, space to simply sit and relax. We found all that, plus a bottle of wine and breakfast pastry waiting for us. Saw eagles and deer. Rode the ferry (free and convenient) for a morning exploring Jamestown. AC and Linda are great hosts -- helpful without being at all intrusive. You'll love the views of the river and the beach, too. Can't wait to come back!

Charm and Peace and History

  • 5 of 5

We couldn't have been happier with this vacation spot. Maybe it's because I've always wanted to live on a bluff overlooking the water, maybe it's because of the incredible peace that surrounds this spot while you look toward Jamestown and Williamsburg across the river, (you hear nothing but the water lapping on the shore, and birds --- bald eagles and ospreys and cormorants fishing the James, an owl hooting in the trees, a hummingbird checking you out on the deck) but this place was enchanting. Close to the free ferry that goes frequently to/from the Jamestown/Williamsburg triangle. The house is spotlessly clean and stocked with just about EVERYTHING you need. I mean everything! I wouldn't recommend coming into the property the first time in the dark unless you call ahead because the driveway is quite an adventure through the forest and fields. You'll think you have to be driving down a path a farmer made along his peanut fields! But after the first time down the driveway you will love it!

Wonderful!

  • 5 of 5

This was our 2nd visit and both times this wonderful little cottage was just perfect. It's cleanliness is only surpassed by the extra touches provided by the hosts. It's almost like a bed and breakfast with so much thoughtfulness having been put into ensuring your stay is peaceful and enjoyable. The beach was quiet, the water warm, the a/c cold. Thank you so much Linda and A.C.!

Why A.C. Traylor chose Surry

Our cottage is in a perfect location for privacy, has a beautiful view, a private beach and the James River to play in, but close to Jamestown, Williamsburg, Yorktown, Busch Gardens and other sites that you came to see. It is like having the best of both worlds.

What makes this cottage unique

The view is beautiful. Directly across the river is Jamestown Island, the place of the first permanent English settlement in America (1607). This cottage is on land that was given to Pocahontas from her father, Powhatan, when she married John Rolfe. On a clear day, you can see the roller coasters at Busch Gardens.

Even if the weather isn't perfect, you can sit on the enclosed porch and watch Eagles and Ospreys fish, or tugboats going by.

As one guest said, it was like coming home after a busy day. And, you can always spend a day on the "rivah," swimming, kayaking, or just enjoying it while sitting under a beach umbrella.
