Each summer when my family returns to Arrowhead, it is somewhat like coming home. Here is this great old house just awaiting for us to fill her up with love, life, and children's laughter. Nestled on the hill overlooking the Sheepscot River, you can be engaged with the world or protected from it, whichever you desire. Arrowhead is only minutes from the Botanical Gardens, the shipbuilders and ocean surf of East Boothbay, and The Harbor. And after a day of being out and about, you come home to the tranquility that is Arrowhead. With all the amenities you could want and the spectacular views of the water, Arrowhead makes for a perfect place to visit, wind down, and enjoy time with your family.
I don't usually write personal reviews but there's something about Arrowhead that's very special. I live and work in Boston, and vacation here for a week in the summer and a long weekend in the Fall every year, and it's a wonderful place to escape to, relax and unwind from the rat race. The cottage is on Sawyers Island, a short drive from Boothbay, and has beautiful water views. It’s very private, surrounded by trees, and you’d barely know it was there if you drove past it. Summer days usually start with a long, leisurely breakfast and a spot of kayaking off the pontoon, followed by a lobster or crab roll for lunch from the local seafood cafe. Afternoons are spent swimming in nearby Knickerbocker Lake, or relaxing with a book or magazine in the garden, then it’s time for sundowner cocktails and dinner. In Fall, the autumn foliage is spectacular when brisk country walks and scenic drives are the order of the day. Arrowhead has a log fire for cooler nights and the sunsets and night sky are just magical (watch out for satellites and shooting stars). The cottage itself is all country charm with a well-equipped kitchen and separate dining and sitting areas which look out to the water. Upstairs, there are 3 comfortable double or twin bedrooms which share a recently renovated bathroom and shower. The best thing: the utter silence and complete darkness at night ... the soundest sleep of my year! I’m always so chilled and relaxed when I’m here, it’s a wonderful place to get off the treadmill for a few days and stop and smell the roses.
We can't begin to say how much we've enjoyed our stays at Arrowhead. As our son was growing up our family always looked forward to our summer trips to Maine and Boothbay and the Arrowhead cottage was our son's favorite vacation spot. We loved the cottage's rustic Maine charm and amazing water views from almost every room.
The sunsets on the dock were beautiful and it was a great place to fish during the day. The ride into Boothbay Harbor from the cottage was so scenic that we looked for excuses to go into town--usually for a lobster roll!
After years of staying there we loved the area so much that we built a house nearby with the design of Arrowhead in mind.
Arrowhead cottage represents Maine to our family. We have stayed there for over 10 years and watched our children grow up each summer in this cottage. We recently purchased a home in the neighborhood and hope to eventually become full time residents, but we still visit and send our guests to stay. We have spent days kayaking and hiking in the area and still visit the cove by kayak to see the seals and friends. Over the years Arrowhead has been a joy to visit. The family have become friends and the house holds many timeless memories for us. The view is priceless!
