One Of The Best Houses In Woodstock (Great for Catskills Skiing)

Property type farmhouse
Minimum Stay 2 - 7 nights

About the property

One Of The Best Houses In Woodstock

Built in 1774, this is the original farmhouse for the entire valley. The house has been lovingly renovated a number of times throughout its history, but it still retains its originals details and charm from the Revolutionary-War period. This is truly one of the more beautiful houses in the area.

The house is handsomely situated on six secluded acres. It has four (five including the den) bedrooms, three bathrooms, a living room with fireplace, a den with fireplace (that functions as a fifth bedroom), a separate dining room, a sun/breakfast room, and two lovely fireplaces. The kitchen is fully equipped for the most demanding of dinner parties. There is also a separate laundry area adjacent to the kitchen.

There is a bedroom downstairs that has a queen bed and an en-suite bathroom. The second bedroom is the master located upstairs with a queen bed and an en-suite bathroom. This upstairs bathroom has a second entrance from the hallway for the use of the other two upstairs bedrooms, in addition to its being en-suite to the master bedroom. The third bedroom is upstairs and has two twin beds. The fourth bedroom is located upstairs and has a full-size/double bed. There is a separate den downstairs with its own fireplace on its own side of the house just off the living room, which nicely functions as a fifth bedroom, containing a queen-size sleeper sofa. There is also a queen-size sleeper sofa in the sun room and a twin-size day bed in the living room.

The property has a 50-foot, salt-water pool. There is a grill at poolside that is both charcoal and gas. In addition to the house, there is a charming art studio in a separate outbuilding and a barn that it used as a two-car garage and tool shop.

Located just over the hill from the town square in Woodstock, the house is in Woodstock proper, just minutes from shops and restaurants in the center of town.

About Catherine

I'm a psychology professor living in Manhattan and Woodstock with my husband and two kids.

Why Catherine chose Catskills

The house is perfect year-round, with skiing in the winter and swimming/hiking/you-name-it during the other seasons!

Guestbook comments from the owner

We loved our weekend in woodstock! The house was absolutely lovely, especially the bedrooms and the light-filled breakfast room. And the claw-foot tub upstairs was a real treat. I can only imagine how beautiful and fun it would be to stay in the summer and have access to the pool. We used the fireplace nightly and the kitchen was well-equipped with basics for dining in. The caretaker was helpful and available when we couldn't figure out how to light the stove and it was a really easy, quick trip from NYC. I will definitely keep the property in mind for future weekend escapes.

Entered to smoke filled house, and had to clean out embers and remnants from fireplace previous renters left behind. Wet, damp, stinky sheets put on bed , which filled room with foul odor. Next, cherry on top; when showering upstairs and downstairs at same time, drain/ line clog caused water to back up and out of shower drain, flooding the downstairs. Property manager tried to say we "flushed something"; totally inept! We left and found another home. What a nightmare.

Owner's Response: Smoke filled? The house had been cleaned. The fire place was not scooped. We had a service to clean pool and offered anything else? no mention , can you please scoop the fireplace. The sheets so sorry the girl put them on damp. :( A mistake that can happen with hot sheets. No one called to say we need fire place cleaned, bed changed until the next day. I Understand late and arriving not comfortable. Tried to respond taking all bedding to laundry and the septic blew up! Perfect timing. I never accused them of doing anything, only said someone had obviously put the wrong thing down. Of when I got a that's insulting. :( I apologized explaining I didn't mean them. Had an emergency call for help the next day . All the family's that have enjoyed the house to the point of overload for a two hundred year old beutifully renovated farm house. I'm sorry for their discomfort inspite of fully using the house and pool with all theirs. Very best always, Sarah (house manager)

Wonderful, tranquil and beautiful location

  • 5 of 5

We had a fabulous time here with a bunch of friends after our son's wedding. The property is truly a home from home; in fact it was better equipped than our own house! It is full of character and ideal for entertaining. Whilst Woodstock has lots of great restaurants, we decided to stay in and cook/ BBQ every evening. The grounds are lovely and despite it raining every day, we still used the pool. It's a bit far to walk to town, so you do need a car. Do note that none of the bedrooms have curtains or blinds, so if you are a 'light' sleeper, bring eye shades. The house manager was very helpful and communication excellent. Would highly recommend this property.

PS Do go for a walk at Snake Rocks just up the road. It's a lovely and historic circular walk of about 30 minutes that many of the locals don't even know about.

Such a comfortable, wonderful historical house!

  • 5 of 5

We were a party of 6, including my husband, myself, our 3 adult kids and one if their significant others. The beds were clean and comfortable and there was plenty of room for everyone to have their own space. Also a great kitchen and 2 dining areas to choose from. Internet was fast. And it was a nice break from having a tv on! (there's no television in the house). A short drive to town, GREAT hiking options close by. It was the perfect weekend and would make a wonderful week-long rental. Sarah (caretaker)was readily available, tho we didn't have any problems or issues so never needed to call on her.
