Charming oceanview farmhouse, off the grid getaway.
Located at the end of a private road, our Pohoiki farmhouse (pronounced locally as Po-iki) is a tastefully appointed, off the grid home with a lovely ocean view. The home sits on five cleared acres and is planted with a variety of tropical flowers, exotic fruit trees, and even a testbed for growing tea. This is an off the grid retreat for visitors looking for serenity and a soothing, entirely different sort of Hawai'i vacation.
The house features a full kitchen; separate bedroom; large bathroom with walk-in shower and hand-crafted acacia wood counter; cozy living room with TV/DVD player; a dining room that comfortably seats four to six; and a large lanai featuring ocean views during the day and sublime stargazing at night.
This is our home, and although work keeps us away from Hawai'i right now we’d like it to be your home as well. Sit on the lanai in the morning sipping coffee and eating papaya from one of the local markets while listening to the slow distant rumble of the ocean. Easily visit the many nearby wonders of Puna: Ahalanui Park warm pond, Pohoiki boat ramp, the Vacationland tide pools, the Kalapana lava flow, Pahoa Town, mystical Red Road...Wander the yard at sunset with a glass of wine while the sun paints the skies over Puna pink. Fall asleep to the nighttime rains…
Because the house is positioned on a hill 400 feet above sea level, the trade winds blow regularly and keep it almost exclusively mosquito-free, which is a bit of a marvel for east Hawai'i.
We are less than 10 minutes by car from old Pahoa Town (restaurants, gas, groceries, wonderful olympic-sized swimming pool) and a mere few miles from the Pohoiki boat ramp and the geothermally heated warm pond. Kalapana is 20 minutes south; the Hilo airport about 35 to 40 minutes north; Kilauea crater about 45 minutes. The location is ideal for exploring the eastern side of the island.
Sometimes it’s difficult to remember that our farmhouse is off the grid, but it is. We have plenty of county water, which is easily and quickly heated by an on-demand propane water heater. The stove and oven are propane as well, and the electrical is solar. The living is convenient and comfortable, however the experience is decidedly more detached – much less energy consumptive, much less plugged-in. Life on Pohoiki Road is in synch with the rhythms of the day. Life is simpler here.

We tell everyone that Lower Puna, the coastal region of easternmost Hawaii, is not the Hawaii of your dreams, it's the Hawaii of the dreams you never knew you had. Pohoiki Road is one of the most scenic and laid back roads on the Big Island. Our place at the end of a private lane off of Pohoiki Road is a serene getaway where the rhythms of the day are guided by the elements -- sun, rain, wind, sky... It's our respite from all the things that drive us crazy on the mainland. It's Hawaii the way Hawaii is meant to be (in our view).
My wife and I enjoyed our stay at Pohoiki off-grid home stay in mid-February. It is accurately described, especially charming. We were attracted by the location near the Volcanoes National Park, off-grid features and reasonable price. The home was attractive, well equipped and maintained. Waking to the morning sounds of the nearby small farm, incredible sunrises and ocean views were especially welcoming features. We also enjoyed exploring Pahoa - what a fun community with good restaurants. Appreciated the recommendations made by owners.
We arrived late at night and it was challenging to find the access initially. The directions were okay, we just missed seeing the small signs. The separated driveway with neighbor wasn't clear ...But.... we figured it out.
Thank you very much for sharing your wonderful home with us.
We loved our stay here. Besides the birds, frogs, the distant surf, and the wind rustling the palm fronds, you rarely hear anything else. We were out a lot but had morning coffee on the huge lanai overlooking the garden & ocean and sat out there at night later than we should with a glass of wine, star-gazing and having long talks. It was awesome that no one could hear us so we didn't have to worry about disturbing others with our conversations. The peace and quiet was just what we needed.
Mat the caretaker was friendly and easily available by text or phone. Our provider is ATT so we had service. There is also wifi.
Being off the grid was fine with minor inconveniences. Our phones & cameras took a long time to charge and we usually had to finish the phones in the car. And no laundry. There's no air conditioning and for us personally, that would be an issue during the hotter parts of the year. In January we had perfect temperatures of 65-75.
Kitchen adequately supplied. No coffee maker so I brought mine. There's a BBQ grill that we didn't use.
Bathroom is heavenly - spacious, good shower, hot water quickly. Bed very comfortable.
Close to Pahoa town with several restaurants. We chose the location to be close to the boat ramp for our early morning lava viewing boat. Other places of interest nearby are Lava Tree state park and the hot pond. We went to Uncle Robert's Wednesday night market event. Absolutely packed, if you go go early, cars were parked in all directions at least 1/2 mile out. We ate then left as we didn't come to Puna for a crowd scene.
We felt welcome and slept like babies with all the fresh air! Come & enjoy.
Pohoiki Farm is a very special place. If you are looking to get lost on a vacation from the hustle and bustle of city life, look no further. Arvin and Jeff keep a lovely home in Pahoa and it is fully equipped with everything you could need.
my husband and i rented this off-grid home and were completely, 100% satisfied with our experience. We stayed February 24th - March 4th. The house was bright, cheerful, and we never experienced any issues with being off-grid. the kitchen was well equipped with everything we needed for cooking breakfast and dinner; we spent several nights on the lanai watching the incredibly beautiful night sky and stars. the house was clean, the grounds well maintained and beautiful. very peaceful. we were visited by the wild pigs and even a turkey. it was a wonderful experience. highly recommended.
We arrived in the dark after a long series of flights from the UK. The provided directions and satnav were perfect. What a lovely surprise in the morning to find what a lovely property and surroundings. This was the perfect place to unwind and start our hawaii adventures with some hiking around the volcanoes national park. thank you
Just wonderful, it was all we expected it to be! It was so quiet and breezy, just what we wanted. The owners/caretaker was top notch. And that view! The grounds were just wonderful and the view to the ocean made our mornings and evenings. The bed was very comfortable, and I don’t know about you all reading this, but to us that is about the most important thing in a rental. If you don’t get good nights sleep, how can you enjoy your days? My misfit shine (fitness tracker) registered more deep sleep for me while I was here than it ever had!
We have stayed in some places where there was so much decoration you can’t really function or think, HA. But not here, the place was decorated perfectly, with just the right amount of everything. Though I think for two people 3 towels each is best instead of two each we got and more washcloths 1 for each day. So minor though.
Thanks to this place we now know how we will design our shower when we build on our land there! We loved that huge walk in shower with no door.
Living on solar was no problem at all! You get creative without a microwave plenty of lighting and fans…you guys did a good job on that house.
