About Debra Harvey

I was born and raised in fabulous Sussex County and spent my summers 'at the beach' in my grandparents' cottage on Hickman Street, where my brother still summers. We rode our bikes on the Boardwalk in the mornings. Mommie packed us lunch and took us to the beach every afternoon. We swam, hunted for shells, sunned, read, napped under the umbrella and returned happily, 'brown as berries' (sometimes, red as lobsters). My brother was genius at skim boarding. We showered off the day outside in the Sand Shower - Awesome! Daddy always had croquet set up for a nice game before dinner. Evenings were spent on The Boardwalk at Funland, eating Dollies' popcorn, ice cream or chocolates at Candy Kitchen. When we were teens, there was volleyball under the lights on the beach. When my own 4 children were young, I wanted them to share the Rehoboth Beach experience. I had the great, good fortune to buy a wonderful home on Pennsylvania Avenue. Later, the Oak Cottage was purchased and lovingly renovated and refurnished. Vera Bradley bedspreads, beautiful Pistoulet dishes, original watercolor art, central air-conditioning and a huge porch on which your entire family can stretch out, relax, dine, snooze, read, play games, make the Oak Cottage a home I can share with others looking for a classic, family beach vacation.

PS ~ Did I mention I love to dance!

Why Debra Harvey chose The Pines

You will love this cottage because it is not the Four Seasons Hotel. It is an old style, comfy, charming, classic beach cottage. You will live on the porch. Everyone does. It's addictive. The yard is large and private. You are not jammed up against the neighbor's house. Plenty of room to play. I always wanted my children to get away from the TV, video games and "go be kids." Yours will be free from the entertainment world and go explore. You will unwind and relax. All that said, there is central air so no noisy window units humming all night. There are TVs in Little Cottage, Master Bedroom, Living Room and one Guest Bedroom for times you feel like watching a movie or checking out the news ~ try not to do it. You have a nice partly sunny, partly shaded yard and a cool, screened porch on which to enjoy your morning coffee, afternoon cocktail and dinner. BBQ some Delmarvalous chicken or steam up those Blue Crabs. We have such delicious local produce and seafood. Or, take yourself out to one of the many local restaurants - Seafood, Sushi, Japanese, Chinese, Italian, Mexican, Pizza, and even British cuisine. This is the most idyllic beach town ever, with all the memories of your childhood and everything you want within your reach.

What makes this house unique

Huge Porch. Ocean Block. So much Fun!

Only 6 houses away from the sand! A very short walk to a gorgeous, sandy beach with lifeguards ~ Memorial Day through Labor Day. You can rent chairs and umbrellas right on the beach.

Just around the corner to the Boardwalk.

Beach Snack Shack - enjoy lunch right on the beach, afternoon snow cones and cool drinks - 1 block away - a short walk across the sand.

Lake Gerar is 2 short blocks away. The children will enjoy the playground and seeing the ducks. Walk over the brick bridge 4 short blocks to downtown attractions.

Known as "Our Nation's Summer Capital," Rehoboth Beach has it all ~ Atlantic Ocean, Rehoboth Bay, Boardwalk, Arcades, Rides, Restaurants, Bars, Live Entertainment, Bandstand Concerts, Water Park, Boutique and Outlet Shopping and more.

Charming locale for families and singles.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Dear Debra - things have been so hectic since we've been home I've not had the opportunity to write and tell you how much we enjoyed our stay at your Oak Cottage rental. My husband and I drove from Texas for a wedding and family reunion and were fortunate enough to have found your lovely home with it s wonderful porch and outstanding location; we relished the peace of our morning coffee on the porch every morning and ate most meals out there too! Our son and his wife stayed in the small cottage out back and were certainly thoroughly pleased.

The wedding on the beach, though delayed for about an hour because of rain, was wonderful! And, although my husband does not understand my joy of spending time in Rehoboth (or any beach) , he had a most pleasant week as we walked and biked for many miles around the beach, town, and boardwalk. On the other hand, I had a great time and look forward to coming back , even if I can't get him to leave the ranch again.

Your rental is so obviously a labor of love for you; we were very comfortable and appreciate all your efforts. Everything was so well tended to and the dishwasher was the quietest I'd ever been around. Also, I appreciate your linen rental; the towels and sheets were so much nicer than what I've experienced in the past.

I was glad to meet you and had fun visiting with you. Again, many thanks and I hope to see you next year.

All best wishes,

Norma

A perfect venue for our extended family beach week!!! We loved it!!!

  • 5 of 5

The space was just right for our week-long three-generation get-together that included 5 adults and 4 grandkids ages 6-18. The adolescents totally loved their ‘private space’ in the cottage! [BTW, the cottage tub is delightful, and the small kitchenette and bath area perfect!!] Besides the amenities throughout, what I think we ALL loved most was the main house porch: there were a multitude of private or group spots to suit any mood or need. We tried out each one over the course of the week!! And when the humidity was low and the temperature suitable, opening the living room French doors to the porch totally changed the feel of the space! The house is light, cheerfully decorated and well-appointed. The owner arranged for us to arrive later, and was very helpful making sure we had everything we needed, replacing needed kitchen tools, answering our questions, mailing left items and so on. The very roomy double outdoor shower was also very much appreciated and enjoyed. While we used the outdoor grill, we found we never used the patio table and chairs, instead eating as a larger group on the main house porch. Overall, the spaces facilitated a wonderful reunion for our geographically dispersed, extended family. We would not hesitate to come again!

Owner's Response: Wonderful! Wonderful! It was a pleasure meeting you and your lovely family. I was glad to help with your late check in and anything else that was needed. I was happy you pointed out the need for a missing utensil. Sometimes things go missing and I overlook their absence. The good news is that I always have extras on hand and can run right over. Isn't the porch the best? Everyone just loves it and it is the true center of family life at the cottage. While "grandparents" usually opt to stay in Little Cottage, I thought it was so nice that the teens got their own little hideaway. So cute! Thanks for coming and being such fun guests. I hope I will see you back at Oak Cottage soon! I have some new decorating up my sleeve for 2018.

Fall Retreat

  • 4 of 5

Perfect location! Short walk to a lovely beach and the board walk. Quiet neighborhood in the fall. The decor was lovely and comfortable seating arrangements abound. Only complaint were the mattresses in the twin room and the cottage. Our older bodies are less flexible.

Lovely cottage!

  • 5 of 5

I stayed here with a group of high school friends for 4 nights and then with family for 7 nights. There were 17 different people over the course of the 11 days (never more than 9 at any one time) and the age range was 30-97. Everyone loved the house! The porch is huge and there are numerous different seating areas. The interior of the house is charming, but I was very glad that we were able to use the porch during the times that there were 8-9 people staying. I think socializing inside the house with more than 6-7 people would be crowded....and there is only seating for four people at a table inside.

While the house "sleeps 10", 3 of the beds are double beds which meant for both of the groups I was with, there were only beds for 7. There is plenty of room for an aero bed in the guest cottage, but there were 4 nights where the 9th person slept on an aero bed in the living room. This might not be a problem if there are several couples or children who are willing to share a double bed.

The Pines neighborhood is lovely and the location of this cottage is ideal....very short walk to the boardwalk and the beach.

Everyone who stayed said they would like to return to this cottage.

Owner's Response: Hi Ann, I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed your stay at the Oak cottages. I'm sorry to hear that you had difficulties with sleeping arrangements. The listing details the size of each bed in the house and where each is located. We were unaware that you would be having rotating shifts of 17 guests staying at the house. You listed only nine guest names in the rental agreement. Had we been aware of your intentions we could have informed you that you might have difficulties accommodating so many people who do not like to share double beds as we have a policy against sleeping on the sofas. But I'm happy that it all worked out in the end and that everyone was able to enjoy themselves. Thanks, Marc

Vacation

Our stay was terrific. The property was clean and beautifully furnished. Plenty of room for everyone and in a quiet neighborhood. Less than a block off the ocean and walking distance to the boardwalk. The family had a great time and we recommend this rental property.

Great Location

  • 3 of 5

Overall it was a nice property. Close to the beach and boardwalk. Bedrooms were small and beds not very comfortable. Would have preferred at least a queen size bed in the smaller cottage and a sofa to sit on. the bathroom in the small cottage was really nice and updated. Debra was easy to work with. we enjoyed our stay.

Owner's Response: Hi Diana, I'm so sorry to hear that you weren't entirely satisfied, but glad that you enjoyed your stay overall. This is the first time I've been told that the beds weren't comfortable so I'll have to test them out when I'm there again.Three of the four bedroom sets are fairly new, one of them is less than two years old. I try to bring new sets in every few years just to keep everything in good working order. But I suppose that everyone has their own preference in their beds. I know I certainly do. I believe that my listing accurately describes the actual bed sizes. I did consider a queen size for the small cottage but thought that it might make that area seem a bit cramped, so I kept with the full size. I'll definitely give that some more consideration though when it comes time to replace that set. It was a great pleasure having you for the week and thanks for the feedback. I really like the idea of a sofa in the small cottage. I'll have to see how I could make that one work! Happy Vacationing, Debra
