About the property

House, 4 Bedrooms, 2.5 Baths, (Sleeps 8)

Beautifully renovated, bright, Victorian townhouse set on banks of the River Liffey with majestic views of James Joyce Bridge in heart of historical Chapelizod Village, and nestled on doorstep of world famous Pheonix Park. (Largest enclosed park in Europe with wild Fallow Deer, also houses Dublin Zoo).

Direct 15 min drive from Dublin Airport. Access to City Centre via numerous bus routes which pass through village, or take the scenic walk along the Liffey, through many Joycean landmarks (40 mins walk) to Guinness Brewery and Storehouse. Take in visits to National Museum of Ireland and National Museum of Modern Art, Kilmainham (30 mins walk).

Or relax in the historical, Victorian Mullingar House, made famous in Joyce’s Ulysses and enjoy a typical, heavenly Dublin afternoon with locals and a fresh pint of Guinness.

2 exclusive reserved parking bays adjacent to side entrance of house. Easy access to M50 arterial route to many of South County Dublin tourist attractions – Glendalough, Dublin Mountains, seafront towns of Bray and Greystones (50 mins drive).

Chapelizod is a small, quiet village nestled in the Liffey Valley, it is bypassed by a motorway on one side and bordered by the Phoenix Park on the other. It has unique access to the green belt that is the Liffey Valley and the famous 'Strawberry Beds' which feature one of Dublin’s finest fish restaurants – the Angler’s Rest (15 mins walk) and also 3 world class Golf Courses – Castleknock Hotel and Golf Club, Luttrelstown Castle Golf Club and Hermitage Golf Club (10 mins drive)

Chapelizod is proud of being the first settlement upriver of Dublin City, which was established in 988AD. It is more in keeping with quiet country life than the bustle of Dublin City life, yet its close proximity gives it its unique ambience.

Enter our house, the first of a red-brick, Victorian terrace of 11 houses (built by Lord Clayton, for his officers in 1899) from the imposing granite steps and arched porchway to the grand hallway on the ground floor.

Our restored, authentic period livingrooms lead into a second, modern entrance hallway, boasting a WC with Rain-head shower, a private gymnasium room and thence on to the new kitchen.

The sleek, clean lines of the kitchen and sumptuous lighting enhance the enjoyment of the quality fixtures - Rangemaster Cooker by Aga, integrated fridge and freezer with ice-maker, gas fire, HD media projector, Sony wireless sound system.

The spacious courtyard garden is the perfect place to come home to after a day’s sight-seeing. Relax with a glass of wine in the evenings, or have a luxurious soak in the spectacularly and lovingly renovated loft, in our free-standing cast-iron bath retreat (of spa standard).

Our period staircase leads to the mezzanine floor, where the Master bedroom (King) is found. The en-suite boasts beautiful twin basins and a luxurious rain-head shower.

The first floor houses 3 more bedrooms, 2 queen-size and one double/twin.

A further mezzanine level with bijou office leads to loft conversion with bath / shower / WC.

About Peter McDonnell

We have been living in and renovating this adored, period residence since 1995. We have enjoyed vacationing in Cape Ann, Massachusetts for the last nine summers and have been making our precious home available for rental for the last few summers. We have just completed a top-to-bottom renovation of the house, restoring many of the Victorian features such as wooden sash windows.

We hope you love our home as much as we do!

Peter McDonnell purchased this house in 1995

Wonderful Home for Three Generations of Family Members

  • 5 of 5

My father, brother, niece, nephew, my daughter, and I stayed in this beautiful home in August, 2014. The house had everything we needed and was full of charm. Peter was very easy to work with and very helpful with all of our questions. We loved the proximity to downtown and we enjoyed a lovely walk to the Guinness Storehouse. Much of the walk was through a beautiful park. The beds and common areas were lovely. The only issue we encountered is that the proximity of the toilets to the bedrooms (with the exception of the master bedroom) is not ideal for people who need to get up in the night to visit the restroom. We would stay here again and would recommend it to others.

Owner's Response: Delighted you enjoyed the house and the location. Sorry to have missed your arrival all by a few hours, but I'm glad I was able to provide you with your essentials when you arrived. While it's true that not all rooms have ensuite WC, we do have WC facilities on 3 levels of the house, which should satisfy the needs of most families and groups. We hope to renovate in coming years to further improve this situation. Thank you for such kind sentiments.

Very comfortable and enjoyable

  • 4 of 5

From start to finish we had a very good experience renting Peter's property. Our booking, payment, and security refund went without a hitch. The description and pictures were right on. All our questions were answered and needs attended to including a nice welcome package in the kitchen on arrival. We found it easy to get into Dublin using the bus service and the passes left in the kitchen were excellent. It was nice to have a home and not a hotel. I would highly recommend for a couple or family group . There were 7 of us all adults and we had lots of room. Thanks to Peter for all that he did for us. Loved Ireland, a must see for all travellers.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much. You guys were so much fun and arguably have the most significant memory (and video!), taking part in the Traditional Music session in O'Donoghue's. I always a advise guests to avoid Temple Bar and to seek out the more authentic parts of Dublin. You guys really hit the jackpot. Thanks again for your kind words.

Exceptional Rental!

  • 5 of 5

I feel bad because it has taken so long for me to write this review because we loved staying in this beautiful family home. We were a group of 4 adults and 2 children and we stayed from June 27 - July 8, 2014. First of all, our host was wonderful. We did not get to meet his family, but we enjoyed seeing the pictures! He answered all messages promptly, greeted us when we arrived (with wine, fruit, and a fridge stocked with the basics to get us started), and he provided all the information we needed. When we accidentally left something, he notified us and mailed it to us immediately.

This property is located in the small village of Chapelizoid, just an easy bus ride to Dublin. We did not need a car, since the bus runs frequently, and is easy to use. We could easily walk to the grocery, pub, pharmacy and church. The house itself was very clean and there was plenty of room. I don't know how they do it, but all rooms had dresser and closet space for our belongings, and were clear of personal items. The kitchen is well-equipped and there is an incredible coffee maker, so we had our coffee freshly ground and brewed each morning! You do need to be able to climb stairs since there are three floors, but there are lots of places to get away from each other, including an enclosed garden area. (The flowers were beautiful!) We were so busy that we didn't even have a chance to use the TV and extensive sound system. However, we enjoyed having WiFi access, and the kids did enjoy the electronic games early in the morning as they waited for us to get ready to go.

If you want to really enjoy Dublin and the surrounding attractions, and you do not want a hotel experience, then this is a perfect place to stay. Thank you to our host and his family. We had a wonderful vacation.

Delighted that you enjoyed the house and the location. Public transport really is straightforward from the house. It's wonderful to guests who enjoy our much-loved home as you did.

A pleasure

  • 5 of 5

We had booked in early Feb for an August stay but unfortunately had to cancel for a family reasons. We just wanted to take a moment to thank Peter for his kind and professional handling of everything up to cancelling. Great info, proactive in sharing tips and very speedy return of our deposit. We REALLY hope to try again next year and Peter will be our first destination of choice.

(we didn't stay in April but had to pick a date for a worthy review)

Wonderful Dublin House

  • 5 of 5

This was a great house for an extended family vacation. It is close to a bus line, and not near the hustle and bustle of downtown. We were easily able to take the bus to downtown to see the sights and shop. That saved on parking and driving in Dublin traffic! Everything we needed was provided or at a grocery store nearby.

Owner's Response: We're delighted you enjoyed your stay. Sorry I didn't have the chance to meet you in person. The bus system really does make it easy for guests who don't wish to rent a car. We use it all the time too. Look us up if you plan to return to Dublin!
