Car-free Bald Head Island, located on one of North Carolina's southernmost islands where the Cape Fear River meets the Atlantic Ocean, is just 35 miles south of Wilmington, NC. Accessible only by passenger ferry or private boat, Bald Head Island’s quiet, stress-free pace helps visitors appreciate the beauty of its 10,000 preservation acres of maritime forests and saltwater marshlands, and the 14 miles of spectacular beaches. Sabal palms grow naturally on the island thanks to the subtropical environs. Moreover, because of the island’s geography with eastern, western and southern beaches, it is possible to see the sun rise and set over the water from Bald Head Island.
Tucked away in the maritime forest, just a few minutes golf cart ride from the beach, the ferry and the Old Baldy lighthouse, are the Royal James condominiums.
The comfortable two bedroom condo at Royal James 1D is perfect for a simple, quiet time away. Royal James 1D is steps away from the refreshing swimming pool and a quick golf cart (a four passenger golf cart is at your service) or bike ride from the beach. Sit on the back balcony/deck and watch the birds and ospreys in and around the lagoon, or admire golfers on the course, or perhaps kick back with a novel while enjoying the shade of the live oak on one of the two shaded decks.
In addition to all of the fun activities on the miles of uncrowded, pristine beaches, the marshlands are accentuated by a beautiful meandering tidal creek that is perfect for kayaking or canoeing. Enjoy hiking and cycling all over the island or climbing up the historic 1817 lighthouse for a bird’s eye view of the island. Hike or bike the island and spot fox, deer, ospreys and other wildlife. Take an evening stroll on the beach and look for giant loggerhead sea turtles laying their eggs or the baby turtles hatching and crawling into the sea. The Nature Center offers guided nighttime turtle walks and other nature programs.
You may book your ferry reservation at (910) 457-5003 and inquire about the Ferry and Parking Fees.
We love Bald Head Island since we first visited in the early 1970s. Since then, we have owned property, visited and at one point, even lived on the island for a almost a decade.
The peaceful pace of the island where everyone cycles or rides in golf carts, the miles of open, clean uncrowded beaches, water to swim, kayak, surf or fish in all over the island, sunrises and sunsets over the water, and all the wildlife make Bald Head Island a special place.
Super comfortable home-away-from home for a great weekend at the beach. Condo was clean and had everything we needed to cook full meals. All beach gear was provided and golf carts were in good working order. The owner was very nice and accommodating to work with. The pool was nice in the evening and had public grills to cook out. Of note, the island is surprisingly easy to navigate if you have crutches or a cane (I injured my knee the day before out trip). The ferry lets you on/off first and helps you to the dock and the locals let you use their boardwalks that go directly to the beach AND The Peli-cattessin Café gives you free ice cream if you crutch your way in :). We love this friendly, beautiful island and we appreciate the condo owner for sharing their home with us. Thank you!!!
It was a wonderful, magical trip and this condo was perfect for our family of four and dog. The condo was lovely, comfortable, and well-kept with inviting views of the front pool and golf course in back. We really liked having two porches, front and back, and multiple sliding glass door access for a full island-breeze effect throughout. Sons (two big teenagers) slept comfortably in trundle bed in second bedroom. Appliances, ceiling fan, lights, air conditioner unit - all in good working order. We enjoyed having two golf carts (one a hard cab, very convenient in light rain and when other cart was charging). This condo is in a great location and convenient to the Marina/restaurants and Maritime market and shops, as well as the beaches and Turtle Conservancy. We packed in some full, adventurous days and allowed for some relaxing time just reading or watching the sun set. We saw island birds, deer, and a huge turtle! Our dog had plenty of canine friends to bark with around the island.
As many of the other reviews mentioned, Marty was a sincere pleasure to deal with and one of the reasons we chose this condo. We truly appreciate all of her many informative emails, notes, suggestions, etc. Renting from her has been seamless and stress-free. We look forward, more than we can say, to our next visit to the island and this condo will be our first choice. Wonderful, wonderful experience. Thank you!
The condo was absolutely perfect for my family's first vacation with our dog and 9 month old daughter! It was centrally located between the marina and the east end, while also being very easily accessible to the south beaches. There is also a great spot to see alligators nearby (from a safe distance). Only down side were the Mosquitos. Bring bug spray!
My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We were looking for a place that was quiet and peaceful for Memorial Day weekend, and we were not disappointed with our stay. Marty, the owner, was wonderful. She was extremely accommodating and totally on top of the issue when we realized one of the golf carts was not working. The condo is close to both the beach and the Maritime Market, and the view of the golf course and lake from the balcony is quite relaxing. The upstairs neighbors were also very friendly and kind.
The food and service at both Delphina's and Mojo's, the main restaurants on the island, was quite delicious. They are located near the ferry and only a short drive away from the condo in the golf cart.
I would definitely recommend this condo to anyone looking for a nice, peaceful, clean, and inviting place to get away from the hustle and bustle of daily life.
The condo was fabulous for our 3 night stay at BHI. The condo was equipped with anything we needed and it was located centrally on the island. My husband, our small dog, and I had a wonderful trip and the owners of this condo are excellent to work with. Very responsive and helpful! We hope to go back again soon!
Wonderful little place. Great central location, easy to get to beach and shops. But the owner was the best thing about our stay. She was more than helpful with making our reservations, and after arriving on the island. Can't say enough how pleased we are with her.
