I am the Captain of a tugboat, based out of New York City. I work two weeks per month, and live in surf trunks and sandals year round. I love surfing, fishing, snowboarding, and cooking. I live for the endless summer. One of my favorite things to do when home is cruise the river via boat by day and party at the casino by night. Of course, I'm doing much less partying now that I'm happily married and a father of a rambunctious three year-old! My wife works full-time in NYC, so I don't get to use the house as much as I would like anymore. I would love to see the house put to good use by a nice family, adventurous snowbirds or thrill-seeking bachelors/bachelorettes.
Michael Hess purchased this house in 2009
This is my first house... and it was love at first sight! The house was completely refinished by the previous owner. The kitchen is awesome. The pool is gorgeous. Ocean access via boat makes it perfect!
When we got to the house we were pleasantly surprised. The pool was beautiful and the BBQ got really hot, that's all we needed. it was clean, spacious and comfortable. Mike was incredibly hospitable. Always a phone call away if we had anything. He even has his neighbor check in to make sure that we can get the hot tub working and that everything is alright. Would definitely stay here again.
This was our once a year vacation and we thought we had found the perfect place. My wife and 2 girls requested one thing for this vacation- a nice quiet house with a heated pool. While this would cost significantly more than a hotel stay I felt we all really deserved it and decided to go for it. After looking at several properties and speaking with the owner of this property we all felt that we had found a really perfect place with a heated pool and a very nice property owner. We were ecstatic but little did we know...
Here is a short list of SOME of the issues we had with the property/owner.
A. We arrived late at night and loved the home but found the place disgustingly unsanitary. They clearly had someone clean before we arrived, but it looked like they used a dirty, smelly rag to do a quick wipe down of the place. There was grime all over the floors, bathroom and the kitchen. When we opened the fridge and oven (which we decided not to touch) we found open containers, spillage and rotting chunks of meat in the oven. I wish I could attach pics. Resolution- the owner was very responsive, said that it never happened before but didn't bother to send someone to clean again or compensate my wife and kids for cleaning the place.
B. After reading the very complicated pool instructions I spent hours trying to get it to heat. I am very handy and have my own mini pool at home which I actually installed myself but I could not figure out why the pool was not heating. I spent the next 3 out of 5 days texting and speaking with the owner to trouble shoot the issue. The owner finally sent his neighbor to check it out. He concluded that the pool lines were severely clogged which was stopping circulation and needed a professional to check it out. Once again the owner was very responsive with this but said it never happened before and didn’t bother sending someone to fix the issue. It wasn’t' till the end of our stay that the routine pool cleaning guy came and in ten min it was heating perfectly. He told us that he was never even called despite the owner promising us that he tried 4 companies but they were all busy. The heated pool was the only reason we decided to take the place but instead I spent 4 out of 5 days trying to get the thing to work.
C. The owner actually had the gall to charge us for cleaning(!!!) after leaving 2 hrs late even though I told him we were going to arrive late at night and leave a few hrs late.
D. When I disputed this he decided not to send me an
My family and I had a lovely experience. The house is very comfortable and the pool is fabulous! Can't wait to go back!
We had 4 adults and 3 kids for our stay. I love the layout of the house. Plenty of space for everyone and the spaces were very separated helping with noise and privacy. Outside was absolutely wonderful! So very private and right on the water. Lizards of all shapes and sizes in the yard across from the house on the canal. Ducks and turtles! There was a noisy parrot (guessing) across the way, but this is no fault of the property.
Michael was so easy to deal with! He accommodated all of my requests and multiple, multiple questions:) We needed to ship some items and were able to ship them to the neighbor, who also was available for questions.
I can't say enough about the pool area. It was enjoyed by all! Even my husband, who never swims. The grill was used every night! On a humorous note... a sprinkler schedule would be nice:) That would have made a funny utube video! As noted in another review, watch the water pool level, needs to be half way up the blue tile. There is a hose right there, very easy. But keep in mind that you may lose water pressure in the house while running the hose.
I do recommend a car or use one of the many car services in the area. There is a restaurant with in walking distance, food was excellent. Can't remember the name, but it started with an M. There is a grocery store not far, but will need a car.
Then there are the planes. At first I really thought it was going to bother us. But.. you can't hear them inside, its really not that many, very few after dark, and in reality you kind of get use to it. Yes, sometimes you do have to pause for 5 seconds for it to pass for talking, but not a hindrance in any way.
Obviously, we loved our stay! Giving it a 5 because there is no option for a 4.75. We would definitely stay here again. Even with the planes;)
Overall we were pretty happy with the house. The location was good if you're interested in being able to travel to different areas easily. Not so much if you just want to walk somewhere.
Michael is easy to get in touch with, and will send the neighbor over to help out. I wish I called sooner when we couldn't get pool to heat. There is a whole page of instructions, which we followed, but the water level was low, and we didn't know this. That should probably be on the first line of instructions. I would have hated to burn something out.
The house is located on a flight path to Ft Lauderdale International. When you're enjoying the back yard you have to stop conversing when a plane is landing. I was very nervous when I first saw and heard the planes thinking they would disturb me. You couldn't hear them in house, and they seemed to change flight path daily.
I was with my husband and two grown sons. They all said same thing about toilets.....cleaning company must not pick up toilet seat. Comfortor in Master needs to be replaced. It has a big hole in it. Beds were comfortable.
My deposit was refunded quickly. 😊
Great house!! Clean & spacious. The location was perfect for our stay- we went to the Hard Rock Casino for New Years: 5 min drive and the Dolphins game : 15 min drive! The weather was perfect for hanging out at the gorgeous pool and cool at night for the gorgeous hot tub! Coming from New England and cold weather we could not have been more happy than grilling outside and hanging out at roomy outdoor table and outdoor bar! Thanks Michael - we will definitley let friends and family know when they need a rental!
2 miles to Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. 10 minutes to Ft. Lauderdale, Hollywood and Dania beaches. Golf courses all over the area. World class deep sea fishing. Air boat rides in the everglades or Flamingo Gardens to see native animals. Nature trails and walking paths. Shopping. Close to Miami. Great restaurants nearby. Snorkeling, fishing and diving also nearby.
