Hillman, Northeast Michigan. Hillman is not far from Alpena and Atlanta -3.5 hours from Metro Detroit
Smoke free cottage, sleeps 6, 2 bedrooms (1st room- 1 queen bed, 2nd room-1 twin and 1 twin over full bunk bed). Fantastic lake views from living room/dining room with stone fireplace.
The cottage sits on 100’ of sandy bottomed lakefront property. There is also a sandy beach play area. Our lot is quite large with many hardwood trees giving it an up north feel.
There is a free public boat launch on the lake and mooring available at our dock. Renters may also have free use of our 12’ aluminum rowboat with oars and our two kayaks. The shoreline has many stretches of vacant land making the lake very peaceful with little activity
Long Lake is one of the top five cleanest lakes in Michigan. It is a clear, natural spring fed lake which often takes on a turquoise blue hue making visitors feel like they are in the Caribbean. Long Lake is home to loons, blue herons and an occasional bald eagle. Fish inhabiting the lake include trout, blue gill, walleye, perch and small and large mouth bass.
Golfers will be greatly impressed with the quality of local golf courses. Two premiere courses include Thunder Bay Golf Resort just 10 minutes away and to the north of us Black Lake. Elk Ridge in Atlanta is not far, either. Golfers can play a different course each day and never drive over 40 minutes.
The Thunder Bay Golf Resort is also home to a large elk herd. Elk can be observed during all seasons. During the winter months patrons can go on horse drawn elk viewing sleigh rides to a cabin in the woods for a fantastic dinner.
The historical town of Alpena is only 45 minutes away. Visitors can attend one of many summer festivals, walk around the harbor and marina or visit the National Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum.
Other attractions include Ocqueoc Falls which is the Lower Peninsula’s only waterfall. Those who want a broader fishing experience might like the well-known Fletcher’s Floodwaters or Hubbard Lake.
Sports enthusiast will also enjoy snowmobiling on state trails in the area. The state trails are only 3 miles away and accessible by back trails. The state trail network connects to all of Lower Michigan. Ice fishing is another popular winter activity on the lake.
A Final Word:
If you are looking for a peaceful and relaxing vacation then this is the spot for you! Our cottage feels like a little slice of paradise and is just what you need to unwind and recharge.

About Art/Cathy Black
We purchased another cottage on the other side of the lake 13 years ago. Our family of 5 fell in love with the lake and area. We have so many wonderful memories of great family time which includes campfires, hikes, water sports, and winter activities. As our children grew older we found we weren't using our cottage as much and we began sharing it with friends and family. There was such an interest that we recently purchased this cute cottage last summer. We finished remodeling it in 2012 and began sharing our place with others! You can check out our other cottage at VRBO 355536

Remote location and beautiful setting
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Cottage on Long Lake. I couldn't get over the view. The lake is crystal clear with a small island. We enjoyed the firepit and seeing the Milky Way from the dock. We rowed out to the island and around the lake for fishing and sightseeing. Didn't catch anything, but that was okay with us. We had everything we needed in the cottage to get started and the grocery store in Hillman was not far away. For wildlife, we enjoyed the black squirrels, hummingbirds, mule deer, chipmunks, loons, and bald eagles.
At first, we had to adjust to no internet, no TV (just three PBS-style channels), and no air conditioning. But being disconnected from the world was exactly what we needed. It was in the 50's at night, so the fans and open windows worked just fine for sleeping. The fireplace was closed, but it was not cold enough to use anyway. I particularly loved the purple tile in the bathroom. The cottage has been renovated and I was so glad to see they kept the vintage tile.
There are close neighbors on either side, but we didn't have any issues. I believe September is the perfect time to visit as there was little traffic on the lake and most of the cabins were unoccupied. The weather was also perfect. I can image that summers are very active. Hillman is a small, remote town, but it had what we needed and the people were friendly.
The owners were great to work with, especially since we were a last-minute booking. We would definitely return to this rental.
We are so glad you enjoyed your stay! We were glad to be able to accommodate you on short notice. Most people are a little reluctant to "unplug" but find it so relaxing. Hope to see you again! Cathy and Art
Great Location, Clean Cottage
We enjoyed our stay over the Memorial Day weekend! The Cottage is clean, everything was as described in the posting (don´t expect too much from the kayaks but they are sufficient to paddle the lake). Thanks for letting us stay in your nice cottage!
We are so glad you enjoyed your stay. We are happy to be able to provide kayaks and a rowboat for your use..
Nice, quiet, wonderful get away!
You cannot go wrong with choosing to stay on Long Lake in this cozy, well maintained cabin. The rental comes with everything you might need for a relaxing stay. The views of the island are the best, especially with the sunset in the background. If you are longing for a peaceful evening a campfire at dusk listening to the loons is a must. Take the kayak out watch the turtles bask in the morning sun. All and all one of the best vacations spots around.
Perfect Cottage on Perfect Lake!
WHAT A LAKE!!! My family and I loved this place. The cottage is clean, neat, and includes all the amenities you need. The lake is PERFECT. The water is so clean and clear! My son and I rowed the boat to the island a couple times. We saw a bald eagle, heard the Loon calls and enjoyed several camp fires. My 1 1/2 year old daughter loved the sandy beach and the water the entire week! She is our little beach bum! My 5 year old son loved looking for fish with a flashlight at the end of the dock just after sunset. Mostly minnows but saw a big bass and a bluegill! My wife and I enjoyed sitting at the end of the dock and watching the boats go by. Thank you so much for sharing your home!
We love to hear about our guests' adventures. We are so happy that you and your family had a great vacation! Hope to see you again in the future. Cathy and Art
Nice Cottage with a beautiful view.
We really enjoyed our week on Long Lake. The Cottage had beautiful views of the water. It also had a very big front porch/deck where you could enjoy your morning Coffee. The Cottage was very clean, bright & open. The Owners supplied all the linens & towels which was great & they even had a washer & dryer. The kids enjoyed kayaking. The bed in the Master Bedroom was super comfortable. We would definitely stay here again!
We are so glad you had a good time! We look forward to having you return in the future.
Lovely cottage and quiet lake
Our family loved the cottage on Long Lake. The house itself was clean, lovely and very comfortable. The owners added a deck which faces the lake and which we enjoyed sitting out on for many hours. The lake is quiet. There were a few motor boats and one jet skier, but, overall, the noise level was minimal and we enjoyed swimming and kayaking to the island. We made a campfire each night which was a great way to end each day. The location was perfect for us, near a small town, without a lot of traffic around. We are definitely planning on returning sometime in the future.
Thank you for the kind words. We are so glad that you enjoyed your stay. We hope to see you again in the future. Cathy and Art
