We have a romantic history with Jim Thorpe. Family of ours owned hotels and a bottling company during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. As sometimes happens, the accountant ran away with all the money, so we just get to look at our lost inheritance and think about what might have been.
Jim Thorpe was the first place we vacationed together as a couple and was the site of our wedding ceremony on a gorgeous May day. It's a place where our family toiled in the mines and in the sewing factory and raised their kids. It’s where every street had a bar and a church and people you dated had to live within walking distance.
Now, Jim Thorpe is about artists, adventure and the art of dining, all of which we believe in and support. We can mountain bike, hike or antique and then dine on American cuisine or attend the strawberry festival at a local church. We like it all.
Charlie Sproule purchased this cottage in 2010
Life in the big city is a noisy adventure, and we craved a bit of solace. It was the mountains that always beckoned, not the shore. Within an hour's drive, we are happily parked in front of our home, feeling miles away from the bustling life we left behind. We enjoy the secluded feel to the place, while knowing that we are just a few minutes away from grocery stores, dining, drive-in movies, hiking, and dozens of other activities.
Star-gazing while sitting on our back porch, after a meal made of ingredients supplied by local farm stands cannot be beat.
Driving 10 minutes to Beltzville Lake and having to choose between a dozen or so amazing hikes is a delight.
Running down country roads past horse farms and seeing the woods in their fall glory is beyond words.
We would be happy to write a review. We were very impressed with the decor in the cottage. We felt at home with the artwork on the walls and the the kitchen amenities. It was nice not to sacrifice quality appliances just because we wanted to get away for the weekend. The technology inside the cottage was perfect. This usually isn't even a category I would talk about because it normally doesn't exist in vacation homes. The directions [to use the technology] were clear and great for a rainy weekend. The wifi was also a must to keep in touch with the kids. Thank you so much.
Spent two nights at the cottage in February. Two adults and two children and everyone enjoyed it. We spent the weekend skiing and it was nice to retreat back to the cottage. It had everything we needed and look forward to returning for some warmer weather and a ski trip next year. Communication with Charlie was great by phone and email.
We just returned from a weekend at this lovely home in the woods. Everything was wonderful! The house was clean and well-maintained. The location and surroundings were peaceful and quiet. We spent most of our time on the deck, enjoying the view of the woods.
Our children loved the charming hand-crafted items that decorate the house. It was a cozy home with a lot of warmth and we will definitely visit again.
Charlie was welcoming and responsive. Excellent experience overall.
Very beautiful house. Me and my family enjoyed our long weekend here and whats great about it is that the house is close to Jim Thrope! We went on the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway and had such a great time. The house is very clean! Close to many stores and attractions! This is a perfect house for a family looking to just relax from the city life! Highly reccomend!
This is a wonderful cottage conveniently located in the Pocono Mountains close to many attractions. The cottage is nicely appointed with all the necessities to make your stay enjoyable and very comfortable, including Sirius radio and Netflix. The owners are super helpful and very approachable. They will answer all your questions, and provide excellent tips/suggestions to make the most out of your stay.
The house was as pictured. It worked out perfectly for our little family of 5 plus a baby. The only thing we had to bring, besides our food, was a highchair. We were very comfortable in the house for the time and learned a little about the area. Charlie was a very communicative and accommodating host. We recommend this property. We were very well pleased.
