Matthew is a native Virginian whose family have loved and enjoyed the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay his whole life. Lachelle grew up in the Midwest on the plains, kayaking, canoeing, and enjoying water-sports on the rivers and lakes that weave their way through Iowa, Minnesota and Missouri.
We were stunned when we pulled up into the drive the first time to see 711 Marshalls Beach Road. The wind was strong, whitecaps rolled across the mouth of the river. (Lachelle felt right at home, as if she was back on the windy plains in Iowa.) As we entered the garden gate, we were stunned. No one could have prepared us for the expansive, break-taking view of the Chesapeake Bay that greeted us as we entered the courtyard.
Our home is the only home on Marshalls Beach that is rented. You are surrounded by Richmond and Northern Virginia families who have traveled here every weekend through the summer for as many as seven generations. Southern hospitality abounds.
The design of the home is the greatest feedback we receive. Every local contractor, builder, real estate agent or neighbor who visits us at the house are floored -- completely awestruck by the property. Many of these folks grew up on the Bay and River or have lived/worked the properties there for years. We think that says it all.
The house itself was nice and the location is beautiful. The neighbors we met were unbelievably friendly and kind - true Southern Hospitailty at its best! The house needs some TLC as far as little wall blemishes and filthy door knobs. Exterior lacks seating as the lounge chairs on the tiny patio were broken and the deck itself isn't wide enough for chairs. The kitchen is nice and very convenient although there is a nasty pizza stone inside the oven that REALLY needs to be replaced. The trash can in the kitchen needs to be replaced as it was unusable and the outdoor can was WAY too small to house anymore than a few bags (If you are staying more than a day or two its a hassle!). These little inconveniences are somewhat disruptive to a vacation but not a deal breaker. The true deal breaker is the July and August "secret" that we were not told about before our trip. The jelly fish made it impossible to use the beach area or swim. There were hundreds if not thousands of them along the shore. You could see them from inside the house there were so many of the little buggers! The only outdoor water activity we were able to enjoy was fishing and crabbing from the dock. So sad that such a great water opportunity isn't usable. I was very disappointed that we were not told about this issue - I would have definitely taken my kids somewhere we could be swimming and paddle boarding - which I completely disclosed to Mathew before we booked the property, and he never mentioned the issue. He only told me about the "nettles problem" after our arrival when I asked him what to do about it - and was told it was a well known issue for the area. So, in a nut shell - if you want to swim or do any water activity at all do not rent here during July and August! As pretty as it is...... there are only so many hot summer hours you can sit on the dock staring at the water, bitter about booking the property that boasts a beach and water access!
Owner is friendly and quick to respond to questions. House is beautiful, with a gorgeous waterfront view from every room. However, there is no easy pathway to the fishing pier, several uneven rocks make it extremely difficult to maneuver. Pier deck is poorly built, no handrails and uneven steps would be dangerous for older visitors or children. Too many jellyfish to enjoy small beachfront from neighbors path, as you can't get in the water with jellyfish. Upstairs bed is comfortable and shower is amazing with many jets. Quite a distance to restaurants and shopping, so come supplied with food to cook. Also, no coffee pot or toaster. Otherwise, home is well supplied and clean.
This beautiful, clean property is situated perfectly, with wonderful water views in every room of the main home. We had a great time even though the weather didn't cooperate. We played board games and sipped our coffee relaxing in the rocking chairs letting the nice breeze flow through the livingroom. The whole 2nd floor is the master suite and has wonderful views as well. The 3rd floor is the super cute cupola. We enjoyed sitting in the dark up there, watching the lightning storm that was many miles away, reflecting off the water. The kitchen has everything you could possibly need and want to prepare spectacular meals. We don't typically dine out, so it was refreshing to have everything we usually use at home, while on vacation to eat well. There is a beach practically in the back yard, where we took great photos of wildlife in the creek and wetlands behind the beach. The patio, side porch, and balconies all come with great vantage points. The closest store is only 11 miles away and a quick drive. We really enjoyed our stay and hope to be able to come back soon with our kids. They will love it too. Matthew was quick to respond and provided great customer service.
Awesome stay! Matthew and Lachelle was great with communicating and insuring our needs where met continually. The home is very beautiful, clean and well kept. We had 6 adults in our group and felt as though we had enough room for everyone. Upon entering the house a feeling of absolute calm and peacefulness emerged, helped us to go from work-mode to vacation-mode in an instant! The house itself has beautiful open living spaces and a large and well equipped kitchen. Bedrooms are private with extremely comfortable beds. The house is designed with an exclusive and serene taste, a spectacular view of the beautiful water views and a think-outside-the-box lay out with a grand piano as well. We also rented the guest house which was just as beautiful as the main house. Most of our time in the home was spent relaxing, enjoying the many decks, patio and fishing & crabbing off of the dock. Caught LOTS of fish and crabs. =0)
We can't wait to be back and enjoy the house again together with a couple of friends! I would positively recommend this home to anyone that want to enjoy a beautiful relaxing escape! Can’t wait to return =0)
What a perfect retreat! My husband, I, and our two adult daughters spent a peaceful and restful week at this wonderful property. We knew it was special as soon as we walked through the gate, with our first view being a vista of endless water. This property is very private and so very peaceful. Beauty abounds here with every window on every floor providing an incredible view. Sunsets are amazing and every morning we were guaranteed a visit by a pod of dolphins. The house is tastefully and comfortably furnished, and the kitchen is more than well equipped. We spent our week on the decks, the patio and the screened porch, reading and enjoying the solitude. We left the property only twice, once for a trip to Tangier Island and another to have dinner at the Kilmarnock Inn (which by the way, was excellent). Matt, the owner, was very prompt with all correspondence, and made us feel very welcome. Would we rent this property again? Absolutely! It was just what we were looking for and more.
An amazing out of the way retreat perfect for recharging! Over the course of a week we saw a double rainbow, two amazing storms with incredible lightning, dolphins playing in the river, a large skate, and more birds than I can mention. The owner Matt quickly responded to any questions and was extremely helpful. Brought home crab cakes from the Crazy Crab in Reedville - best I've ever had. Took a day trip to Tangier and had some fun visiting area thrift shops. A truly relaxing vacation. The views from this home are unsurpassed.
This Waterfront property, just 2.5 hours southeast of DC and only an 1.5 hours north of Richmond, VA, is nestled at the end of a quiet road overlooking the Chesapeake Bay. Please see FURTHER DETAILS regarding water access and nearby beaches. This area is convenient to grocery shopping and fresh seafood shops in nearby villages of Reedville, Heathsville and Burgess.
