(Toad Hall is undergoing some important upgrades and will be ready for late June 2014. First of all we are adding a new water heater. The kitchen will have new counters and walls and ceilings, and the bathroom will be retiled.)
This is a charming , large cottage, built in the 1880's. It is about a five minute walk from the heart of Bayside village. The downstairs features a large kitchen/dining room, den with DVD player, cosy living room , full bath (tub/shower) and sunny enclosed porch. Upstairs is a master bedroom with a view of the ocean, full bath (shower), laundry room with claw foot tub, large bedroom with a double and single, and back bedroom with bunk beds. Hard wood floors downstairs and old painted wood floors above. The kitchen features a microwave, coffeemaker, dishwasher, electric stove, toaster. Linens are provided by owner.
Have a storybook summer: Toad Hall was built in 1880. Over the years it has been treasured by the families who have owned it and summered in it. The original porch was enclosed as part of the living room; then it was put back as it was; then it was screened; then it was 're- enclosed.' A kitchen ell was added on in the 50's. A whole new bedroom was added upstairs in the 90's. All through the classic Bayside-style renovations, it has never lost any of its cosy charm. A very special feature of Toad Hall is its large deck, which overlooks a spectacular vegetable garden, as well as views of the ocean.
How did a California girl get a cottage in Bayside, Maine?? It's a long story, and even a longer journey than the 3000 miles across the country. I grew up in Mt. View, Ca, went to Stanford, and then, my husband and I lived all over the world for the next twenty-five years as he had a career with USAID. On a home leave in May 1988, we took a trip to Maine, saw this cottage for sale, and spent our savings to provide a beautiful U.S. summer home for our growing family. It's painted green with pink trim to express the storybook quality of a summer in Bayside. Over the years we poured our hearts into this cottage. I brought in a claw foot tub, combed auctions to change every door knob , changed wallpaper, and put in a hardwood floor downstairs. Now it is time for an upgrade and we are upgrading the bathrooms and kitchen, as well as installing a new water heater and internet.
Maureen O'Keefe purchased this cottage in 1988
This large Bayside cottage is set back from the road, overlooks a picturesque vegetable garden, and had views of the ocean. The wharf, the golf course, and the sailing school are a few minutes away by foot.
We had a fantastic time. What a beautiful time of the year to be in Maine (September) and such a quaint cottage. Enjoyed the big deck, and even though across the street we had a partial view of the water and enjoyed access down the steps. The cottage is obviously well maintained, new water heater and laundry, quaint claw-foot tub. Lots of room. We will definitely be back!
A charming home in a charming town. The word cottage is misleading as the home is quite spacious with three large bedrooms, open concept kitchen, and various rooms downstairs for gathering and resting. I've come with my husband and friends several times now. We enjoy the proximity to the water, the peacefulness of the area, and the water views.
Step back in time to a peaceful gentle and gorgeous venue. Penobscot Bay is across the street. Just a short walk to a sandy cove or rocky beach - tides and shells and sea glass and views spectacular. If you want world class meals visit Belfast (less than ten minute drive). Also find art and history and a real working ship yard. Hike, bike, and kayak for a bit of exercise. The two story house itself is roomy, clean, lovingly maintained and decorated, two bathrooms. The Owner is a delightful, full of interesting stories about the area and world travels and tending to her vegetable and flower gardens. I try to visit at least once a year. A place where your stress begins to fade as soon as you exit onto Shore Road.
Bayside is like a dream come true. You never believed that a place could be this perfect. Hidden away from traffic off Route 1, the coastal road in Maine, Bayside is sacred for those 'in the know'. Started as a church camp in the mid 19th century, tents became cottages as the Rusticators invaded the beautiful village to make it become a top resort area. Gingerbread cottages are close together in the village proper which boasts a wonderful 9-hole golf course, and famous yacht club with a great jr. sailing club. Toad Hall is a five minute walk from the urban part, and is set back from the road so you will enjoy tranquility and the Bayside amenities all at once.
