Description

Monterey Chateau / Country House Rental Photos and Description

Chateau / Country House, 4 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2.5 Baths, (Sleeps 12-14)

This newly renovated, waterfront property and home uniquely combines an ideal Berkshire location with privacy, land and comfort.

Its size, layout and amenities can provide either the comfort for relaxation and can be an ideal setting for large families.

On the first floor, guests will find a beautiful living room, designed for relaxing, playing games, or watching movies. The centerpiece of the room is a fieldstone fireplace. The first floor also features a dining room that seats 10, a gourmet kitchen and a wrap around outdoor porch.

On the second floor, guests will find a master bedroom and bath, two separate guest rooms with additional bathrooms, and a bunk room designed for children that can sleeps six.

Outside, a large barn, originally built in the 19th century, over looks the property. Guests will have the unique opportunity to enjoy both a beautiful lake and 4 acres of property with specially designed gardens and paths that lead to private access to Lake Garfield.

The Lake side of the property includes a wonderful private deck with a masterful view, a private dock with canoes, a floating swimming dock and lots of water toys.

It should be noted that Lake Garfield is the most beautiful lake in the Berkshires because it is the only one managed for weed control. The water is lowered each winter to kill off the weeds, so the water is clear and weed free.

The property is located in the quaint village of Monterey, MA, which has a town beach, playground and wonderfully kind people.

The property is 15 minutes from the restaurants, galleries, shops, concerts and theaters of Great Barrington (rated one of “the coolest small towns in the U.S.A” by Budget Travel magazine).

The property is also 15 minutes from the towns of Lenox, Stockbridge, and Lee. In the summer, you can enjoy Tanglewood, Jacob’s Pillow, Shakespeare & Company, the Berkshire Theater Festival, Williamstown Theater Festival, the Norman Rockwell Museum, Edith Wharton’s home and numerous other cultural attractions.

The house is quick drive to top-notch hiking and outdoor spots such as the Appalachian Trail and Beartown State Forest.

In the Winter, the house is located only minutes from the ski areas of Butternut, Otis Ridge, and Catamount.

A Labor Day to Remember - And A Great Way to End the Summer

  • 5 of 5

As you already know from the note we sent you, please sign us up for next Summer. We had an amazing visit. This was our eighth labor day visit to the Berkshires. Each year we travel around renting a new place, but this is it - we have found our Labor Day destination point. In fact, my husband and I would like to rent the place just for ourselves this Fall. Here is the biggest thank you - It is actually not the beautiful private dock view of Lake Garfield; it is actually not the image I have our kids racing thru the many paths of the on the property and picking blackberries; it is not the great old house; or how close the property is to just about everything in the Berkshires; and it is not the thorough welcome book that you provided us with so many great Berkshire vacation and activity tips. All of those things were great and yes, thank you! But the biggest thank you, what we really liked the most, were all the items you made available to us. At the last place we stayed, we had to rent our own boats. You not only had all these great boats, but you had a barn full of children activities and toys; you had just about every board game on earth is in the house; an amazing DVD collection; an ice cream maker; a gourmet blender; even a cuisinart! It takes a great deal of trust to leave so much for your renters. You could have easily just rented us a house, but you actually rented us a home. Thank you! By the way, I agree with your last commenter. Your property's sign-in book is beautiful, the stories and shared experiences that your renters voice through the years is amazing. Completely, agree with that person you should get those comments posted.

One Suggestion

  • 5 of 5

To the owners - Maybe you will remember me, we spoke on the phone last week where I thanked you on a great visit. We stayed on the property in early June. You should really think about taking the comment book you have at the house and transferring those comments on this page. When we all stayed at the house, my family really enjoyed reading the years of personal and beautiful comments from everyone. It felt like I was in a time machine. It was helpful to read all the great ideas on how people used the property, what they enjoyed most, what they will most remember, and hearing the series of charming stories. All the comments would be interesting for others to read and of course the positive notes would help you rent the home as well. We are still talking about our stay and miss the home so much that I had to back to the site and look at the photos. Then I got the idea and wanted to share.

MAGICAL!

  • 5 of 5

Let me begin on staying how kind the owners are. They seem to have team all working for the property. The owners make themselves available remotely, but they also have a caretaker who can be reach any time, a team that takes care of the grounds. At one point, the ladder on one of their floating docks came undone and within hours their dock specialist came to fix it. I felt like I was staying at a fancy hotel, all for a reasonible price.

What was most amazing was the facilities. Everything you can think of is in the house - everything from boats to every board game to a huge collection of DVDs.

What we loved most, and this might be silly, is the book you receive from the owners. It has a list of all their fav restaurants, explanations on where to find everything in the house, maps of the property and the area. All of this comes in real handy.

I will let you determine how beautiful the place is by the pictures, but will say we were so grateful we did this.

Great week!

  • 5 of 5

What an amazing week we had on lake Garfield! The house was as described. The dock and lake were just spectacular. Having canoes, kayaks and paddle boards all available made it all the better.

We have kids, and the house was stocked with lots of toys they could play with, movies to watch on a rainy day, and generally everything we needed.

Like a previous reviewer, an appliance broke for our stay (the washing machine), and the owners handled it as well as possibly getting the machine replaced quickly.

The area is also truly spectacular. Small farms, fresh vegetables and the great Monterey General Store. Hope we can make it back soon!

A Response to the Stern Review Below

  • 5 of 5

We are not sure if this is the correct way to respond to a review like the one below - but considering how passionate we are about providing our guests with great service and how much we truly care about our property, we wanted to follow up on the concerns listed -

- We are very proud of the property, both the fact that it has it own private dock, its own boats to use and the fact - as displayed and showcased on the site - over four acres of property with diverse paths to stroll and enjoy the Berkshires. A trip around Monterey and Lake Garfield will show that there are very few areas in the Berkshires that provide that much land and private docks access to enjoy the lake. While we are sorry they were expecting the house to be right on the water, we are not looking to misrepresent the house is anyway.

- Up until this renter, we have never received about water pressure. It should be noted that like many in the area we get our water from a well, we also invested a great of money to have the water filtered and softened. It is very nice. Immediately after their stay, we went to the property ourselves to understand the issue they were describing. We could not find any issue. We could only fairly assume that a much larger group of people stayed at the house then agreed to and that the well could not handle everyone taking a shower at once.

- Regarding the appliance concern. This is really unfair. During their stay the refrigerator broke. Instead of wasting time making an appointment with a repair man, accessing the problem or ordering a part, we immediately just bought a new fridge and paid extra to have it delivered within 24 hour. In the interim, we had our property manager open up our private pantry and let them use our personal fridge and freezer. I am not sure what else we could have done.

- Regarding the trash concern. Being in the position is unfair. Our property manager came to the house immediately and cleaned up the mess.

We understand the Sterns were not happy with their stay and that is well within there right. Prior to their stay, considering the many, many pre-stay phone calls they made to us - with special needs and questions, we thought it might be a bit of a high maintenance visit. What we did not realized is that after working so hard to address their needs, they would then look to unfairly characterize their stay. Please know we did everything to make their stay perfect. Thank you.

Uneven Stay

  • 2 of 5

Nice home but there certainly issues arose that resulted in an uneven quality of our stay. The GOOD: The home is beautiful, gorgeous kitche, loved the screened in porch, and the mountain view is wonderful. The property and surrounding area was charming and very quiet. Lake Garfield is wonderful - we had a very nice time while on the water. Property and home very well kept - plenty of space. The BAD: The property is NOT lakefront (you have to walk a steep slope 500 ft+ to get to the lake and dock) - not for those with difficulty walking, it is a stretch to even call it waterview. Second, there is ZERO water pressure - good luck taking a shower if anything else is running. The UGLY: an appliance broke and we spent considerable time coordinating with the owner and the caretaker, who were slow to respond and not considerate of our time. Worse, the prior renters did not secure their garbage which resulted in a mess - we contacted the caretaker and owners who were unnecessarily rude to our guests - embarrassing! OVERALL IMPRESSION - Overpriced and misrepresented. There are plenty of places actually on lakefront with more considerate ownership - press on.
