This lovingly restored and furnished 1930's knotty pine cottage has everything needed for an old-fashioned get-away. Situated on top of a hill, 1/2 block away from the white, sandy beaches of Lake Michigan, the home offers complete privacy while surrounding trees are full, with seasonal views of the lake in winter. The second floor deck and large ground level patio offer peaceful outdoor settings when not at the beach. A wood burning fireplace, books, games and puzzles offer old-fashioned entertainment for the family. The home is purposely without a television and computer.
The restored kitchen is furnished with all major appliances except a dishwasher. There is a large work island allowing more than one cook in the kitchen.
Two full baths, one upstairs and one down, have been fully restored to include new tile and fixtures, and the downstairs bath was modernized to include a walk-in shower and Jacuzzi tub. Baths are furnished with towels.
Two upstairs bedrooms are furnished with full-size beds. Two downstairs bedrooms offer a queen size bed in one, and two twin beds in the other. All beds have quality bedding.
There is a secondary living room downstairs with games and puzzles for guest use. A small kitchen downstairs provides convenient access to the patio and charcoal grille and is a great place to prep for dining on the patio.
During summer months an open-air, outdoor shower is available. There are some beach chairs and coolers for guest use.

We have been enjoying the Indiana beaches for over 25 years. We bought this home in 1998 and underwent a major restoration. As an architect-interior designer team, we sought to maintain the 1930's character of the home while creating a gracious experience for our family and guests.

Miller Beach is a perfect get away from Chicago, not only because of its close proximity, but because of its world's apart feeling from the hustle and bustle of an urban environment.
The unique privacy of the property, coupled with its purposeful absence of a television, computer, and day to day distractions, allows our guests to truly celebrate life's simple pleasures. Whether you stay a week or a weekend, you will leave feeling rested and refreshed.
My family of four, plus two grandparents and a great-grandparent, stayed at this cottage for a recent family reunion, and we can't speak highly enough of the place. The cottage is charming, with decor appearing to be accumulated through many nature walks and travels. We had tons of space -- a living area upstairs and down, four very comfortable bedrooms, two updated baths, and a full (smallish) kitchen upstairs and a tiny kitchen on the lower level, perfect for prepping items for the grill or keeping snacks and beverage refills handy when enjoying the back patio. During our weekend, we hosted extended family members for a dinner, and despite the large crowd, we felt we had plenty of space for everyone, and the many different rooms allowed people to gather where they wanted -- little kids in one space, teenagers somewhere else, and adults all around. The home has two charcoal grills plus a built-in grill, and the patio comes with a dining table and chairs (as does the upstairs deck); the patio had lots of room for add'l camp chairs we brought and still had space for hop scotch for the littles. Accessing the main level does require navigating a flight of stairs -- either on the exterior (wood deck, so a little slick in the rain) or inside (no rail on the interior steps, which we did miss), but our 85-y.o. great-grandma navigated it OK with assistance. We did not miss the lack of TV or internet, and we got decent-to-good cell service (verizon) throughout the house and definitely outside. The location is great -- the beach is just a half-block away, down quiet streets, and it's very clean, with soft sand characteristic of the dunes. There's a large park just 5-10 min drive away, which has shelters, a very nice playground with a little kid and a big kid area, as well as beach access. The owner of this cottage is the most thoughtful and accommodating person! She provided plenty of information before we came, she had ample towels ready for everyone (some of our extended family at other vrbo's did not), and she was very intent on having our stay at her cottage be a comfortable, easy one. We accidentally left two items behind, and she quickly mailed them to us with great care in packaging the items to avoid damage. My family and I agree that this cottage was perfect for us, and we definitely look forward to coming back, whether in warm weather or cool, for some additional R&R. I can't recommend this cottage and its host highly enough.
My husband and I were looking for a nice, quiet place between Cleveland and Chicago to meet up with our 2 daughters in college in those cities. This fit the bill to a T. Lake house was clean, cozy and my art student daughter especially loved the mid-century decor. Girls grumbled at first to have no internet or TV but we did puzzles and played cards and laughed and enjoyed each other's company, just what we wanted to do together. Loved having such close access to quiet beach as well. My oldest daughter was tickled by the "love letters" on the wall in the front bedroom since she has the same name.
Our family found this cottage to be a very relaxing home away from home. My daughter-in-laws thanked me for the absence of a TV. This definitely gave us more time together interacting as a family...we played games (many are provided) and spent time at the beach (a short walk of 5 minutes). The Miller Beach is very nice and private. Don't be wary about the Gary address as this cottage is located in the Miller Beach Community. We even took a short trip to Chicago (it is only 35 minutes away) to visit the Navy Pier one afternoon. The owner was very helpful and it is very noticeable that she put a lot of time, money, and hard work into making this a very comfortable stay. The only problem was I wish we could have stayed longer...
We just came back from a wonderful 5-night stay at this lovely house. We were two families, with 4 adults and three children, and we couldn't have been more pleased with the house.
Nestled in amongst beautiful trees and chirping birds, we felt like we were cozied up in a tree house. The accommodations are comfortable and a perfect mix of whimsy and design. There are wonderful toys (for small children and adults) and fabulous books, and a kitchen stocked will all the tools we could need.
The beach is just at the end of the street and we visited every afternoon. In the mornings we went for nice hikes in the nearby dunes and woods (just a short drive).
The owner is throughly communicative and made us feel incredibly welcome. We loved our stay!
A large group of us were staying in Gary in two houses for about 2 weeks. This house had fantastic decor - really a lot of attention to detail in the interior decorations - you can tell the owners have put a lot of care into making it a special place. It's just a short walk to the beach and a short drive into downtown Gary, which was very convenient for us. The owner was very communicative by email and got back to us right away with any questions we had. It is worth noting that the house isn't wired for internet (but does have cell service), so it would be great for people who want to get away from it all and relax. One of our group of a 7 year old, and he really enjoyed staying in the kids room and looking through some of the childrens books that were available.
I am so glad to have found this rental! I could not have known how perfect the cottage was going to be for our group(8 adults, no kids :) It far exceeded our expectations and we are already planning our trip for next year! The owner is a lovely person and was extremely helpful and communicative before, during, and after our stay. The home is enchanting and amazingly decorated; full of whimsy and character and charm. The pictures simply do not do it justice. You have to see it in person to fully appreciate all of the effort that has been put into making this home a real retreat. It was very clean and well maintained. The kitchen is fully stocked with everything needed to prepare meals. The property is beautiful and also well maintained but not overly manicured, which I really appreciated and which lends well to the overall cottage feel. There is plenty of outdoor space for eating meals, or reading, or bird watching...even an outdoor shower! The walk to the beach is a short one, and so worth it. The beach was clean and semi-private as there is no public parking at the access point used by this neighborhood. We had plenty of room to spread out and enjoy the sun and warm, clean water without being overwhelmed by other beach goers. There is also a fantastic view of the Chicago skyline.
I have to say, there were some reservations in our group about the fact that this home is located in Gary. They could not have been more wrong. This home, the neighborhood, the beach, and most importantly the lovely owner, are real treasures. I would HIGHLY recommend this rental. Thank you P!!!
