KRAUSE CREEK LODGE is conveniently located 22 miles south of Lake Superior in the small town of Mellen WI just two miles from the entrance to beautiful Copper Falls State Park. The address is 71018 Kornstead Road Mellen Wi.
Krause Creek Lodge is a cedar sided 2brd with loft, 3/4 bath and large great room over looking a seasonal beaver pond on Krause Creek-a class one trout stream.
Set on 120 private acres bordering the Chequamegon National Forest, Krause Creek Lodge is tastefully decorated in a Northwood's theme. Easily sleeps 6. I provide cots for extra guests at an additional charge max capacity 9. The lodge has radiant floor heat and a wood burning fireplace stove. Built new in 2012, it is fully equipped with everything you need for a vacation. A recreational trail system borders the land so you can motor in on your machine and head right back out again. Grouse and deer hunters will be in heaven. You will never hunt all the land available to you in one life time. I can help arrange semi to fully guided trips if you prefer as well as ATV and Snowmobile rental. Or just walk out the door and into the forest on your own. Guides require advance planning so plan ahead.
There is very little human pressure due to the remoteness of the lodge. A true Northern Wisconsin Wilderness experience on 120 private acres.
The Haugers are a family of four who enjoy the Northowoods of Wisconsin and all that the 4 seasons have to offer. We frequently go to the lodge to snow shoe, ski, snowmobile, hunt or just relax by a campfire or the fireplace.
Neil Hauger purchased this cabin in 2012
If you seek quiet solitude or easy access for ATV or Snowmobiling that KCL is for you. Mellen is a 30 minute drive from Ashland Wi or 45 minutes from Hayward. The lodge is on the edge of the Chequamengon National Forest and in the Penokee Mountain Range. The trail system for Ashland County comes down the edge of the property so access is stupendous. This is a highly sought after lodging destination due to the amount of the lake effect snow we receive in winter and the miles and miles of trails to snowmobile or ATV on. Machine in and right out again. Very Convenient.
KCL is very well appointed. I finished the entire cabin in a grade 2 knotty pine. The floor has been stained with an eco friendly vegetable dye and has been waxed to a high gloss. It has the appearance of marble. I installed radiant floor heat that can be turned up to the temperature you desire. Radiant heat warms the concrete floor to a nice comfortable temperature that heats the lodge very evenly. You can walk in your bare feet and not be cold. In the summer it has an opposite cooling effect as the ground generally stays at an even cool temperature. There are two bedrooms with new comfortable mattress and antique beds. A custom built ladder takes you to the loft where two more twin beds are located. I also installed a 297 feet deep well and an on demand water heater so there is always water for domestic needs and shower. The great room has lots of windows to give you a beautiful view of the beaver pond on Krause Creek. The Kitchen has all new appliances so you can enjoy a nice meal if you choose to cook. ATV and Snowmobile are available to rent and hunting/fishing guides can be arranged at an added fee. I can sleep 6 in beds, three more on cots I provide, possibly one on a couch. Lots of floor space if you do not mind a blow up mattress. I have had 10 men at a time and it is do-able if you are there for a short stay. I would say 10 is our maximum though.
Recommend some water filtration. I love well water but the water tasted pretty sulphurous
Recommend cleaners clean the ashes out of the wood stove regularly so it drafts air better
We'll def be back for another visit
In all transparency, we did not stay at Neil's property. However, it is for that very reason I am writing such a raving review of the owner. We inadvertently booked the property after the area was ravaged by floods. About 5 minutes after we booked the property, we got a call from Neil, the owner. He was completely honest about the condition of the area and the difficulty we would have getting to the cabin. He immediately offered a full refund of all of our money on the spot. We asked for a day to research the issue more. He gladly accepted our request. After researching the road closures, etc., we determined that it would be very difficult for us to get to the cabin. We contacted Neil about our decision. He again gladly accepted our request to cancel our reservation and refund our money. I cannot think of a more honest and forthright owner. And, so, if Neil would deliver during circumstances such as this, I can only image how he would deliver under normal circumstances. Thank you, Neil, for being such a great, honest owner!!!!! I look forward to the day we can eventually stay at our gorgeous cabin! All the best!
We stayed here for a long 4-day weekend. House was very nice and we loved the location. Unfortunately the weather did not cooperate very much (raining) so we stayed indoors and relaxed. Would definitely recommend anybody to stay there.
The cabin was clean and neat. The beds were comfortable. There was plenty of hot water for all of us to take showers in the morning as well as plenty of towels. There is a great assortment of games and cards to play in downtime. We loved the close proximity to Copper Falls State Park and the Apostle Islands which we did for day trips. The scenery outside is beautiful. It was also nice that he had firewood for us to burn for a campfire at night. My only suggestion would be for more outdoor seating/bigger table.
We were thrilled when we pulled up to see the cabin. Well maintained, beautifully decorated, peaceful and every bit of charm we were hoping for! Took your recommendations and went hiking at Copper Falls with our children (which they loved) and a day trip to the Apostle Islands. It had all the accommodations we needed and is well taken care of. This cabin is an absolute gem! We had a wonderful time~
We stayed for 3 nights in July and enjoyed the peace and quiet. It was lovely to sit on the front porch and listen to the birds. The cabin is well-maintained and nicely furnished. It was just my husband & I, but I think kids would love climbing the ladder to the loft! We really appreciated a place we could have our dog with us. Neil quickly replied to any inquiries we had and was helpful giving tips of places to eat. The only items we would've liked to have seen provided were wine glasses and more outdoor seating. Also, we could not get the DVD player to work, so instructions for that would be helpful.
Bayfield is normally only about 45 minutes away, but some of the roads were recently washed out in a storm, so it took us an hour. We took the ferry to Madeline Island to bike and have lunch. Would not recommend the Beach Club for appetizers; they were terrible. And beautiful Copper Falls is super close. We went there and hiked around the falls.

Krause Creek Lodge is located in Beautiful Northern Wi on the edge of the Chequamegon National Forest. The lodge is conveniently located about a mile and a half from Mellen Wi. The lodge is set on 120 private acres overlooking Krause Creek and a seasonal beaver pond. There are miles of ATV/walking/snow mobile trails that connect to the property. Machine right up to your front door for a quick drink or a hot refreshment and hit the trail again! KCL is located a short drive from Ashland Wi with a rich history of logging and Great Lakes shipping. Many festivals and attractions year round. Copper Falls State Park is a must see. It has beautiful water falls that line up in a series and cut deep gorges in the red granite of the area. Obvious recreational choices are ATVing and Snowmobiling. You can access hundreds of miles of local trails all throughout the national forest all the way to the UP of Michigan. The options are endless. If you are a hunter look no further! This is wild endless country laced with logging trials, swamps and hardwood ridges. Grouse, Woodcock,Monster White tail, Bear and even a resident herd of Elk are in the area. There are numerous wilderness lakes that receive very little fishing pressure so fishing is fantastic. Try your luck on a guided float trip on the Brule, Namekogan or the Flambeau. Both have world class fishing for Trout, Small Mouth and Musky. At the end of the day enjoy a warm fire in the lodge or sample one of the local taverns such as the Cayuga bar, Snow Creek or the Northern Lure. If you go to 'da lure' you have to try Kathy's pizza. She is the lodge owner and from Chicago. Best pizza in the Northwoods! KCL is a quiet, relaxing lodge that sleeps 6 easily and can accomodate up to 10. ATV's, SnowShoes and Snowmobiles are available to rent at added cost. Ask the Lodge owner for information. If you are looking to recharge in a Northwoods experience. Look no further!
