Nice notalgic house in excellent location

  • 4 of 5

The first thing I have to say is that the location of this place for a vacation with kids is perfect. It's literally a short walk to Story Land and only a few miles from Attitash. It's right in the middle of the attractions of the southeastern part of the White Mountains. There's a grocery store and a restaurant right across the street. You really can't beat the location.

The house itself is a throwback. Cutesy memorabilia from when most people alive today weren't born (a pre-rotary telephone, ads from the 1950s, etc.) adorn the house and there are nice touches like that throughout. The patio is fantastic for grilling and the backyard is peaceful in spite of the house's location on a main road. The rooms are charming, though without a/c, the upstairs rooms were pretty hot even in relatively cool end-of-August NH temperatures (the upstairs rooms are 10-15 degrees warmer than outside and there's no cross-ventilation in any upstairs room) - though every room did come with fans. With highs in the 70s and lows in the 50s when we stayed, we were okay (if a little warm upstairs), but I don't think I'd risk the lack of a/c in July. With 5 queen beds and one sofa-bed, sleeping 12 here is a bit of a stretch, but it's doable. The kitchen appliances, by and large, are very good and the washer and dryer in the basement were nice to have.

For those of us used to 21st century conveniences, some of the idiosyncracies can be a bit annoying. Just to cite some examples: most outlets don't take three-pronged plugs and most lights in the house either are not toggled by wall switches or are operated by switches in counterintuitive places. There are also sharp edges and unexpected drops from room to room in some areas downstairs as well as a lack of a staircase railing that makes this a little less kid-friendly than ideal. Many of the windows are very old and not easy to operate.

All-in-all, I think this is a nice vacation home for up to about 9 people and it's very charming and in an excellent location. Just don't expect all the modern conveniences of a 21st century house.

Regarding attractions nearby, StoryLand was good for both the little kids and older kids (though perhaps not so much teens) and Attitash was amazing for everyone in the family.

Perfect place for families

  • 5 of 5

Tim and Carol have a wonderful home, that is inviting to both children and adults. It is a perfect place for families to stay. It was mentioned before but the back patio is phenomenal. The house was immaculate, everything worked as it should, and we could not beat the location. Everything we wanted to do was close by, including Storyland, which we actually could have walked to. This was a perfect home for multiple families traveling together and we are so grateful to have found it.

Mt. Washington Area Base Camp

  • 5 of 5

Had a delightful one-night stay at this clean, charismatic home about that was perfect for our purpose of needing to be close enough to climb the Big Mountain. The outback covered patio is really useful, and the home has many little decorative elements that add a nice local flavor. Could be a bit noisy on a weekend night, with no a/c, but fans helpful and overall would recommend and return without hesitation.

One of the best places we've stayed!

  • 5 of 5

I will be repeating what past reviewers have said as well as all of the friends and family we welcomed into this home during the stay, "This is the best house EVER!!" We are almost exclusively home renters when we travel, so we have experienced many, many, many rental properties. This by far and away is one of the best. The home is nostalgic in all the best ways, yet upgraded for absolute creature comfort. As my friend said, "The back patio is legit!" Multiple fireplaces, unique touches, fantastic hosts, comfortable beds, impeccably clean. State a compliment and it applies to this house. The pictures do not and could never do this house justice. We are in the area a couple times a year, and we will ALWAYS stay here. THANK YOU!
