About Vicki Beal

Doug Beal, Jr. a 5th generation, lived in Southwest Harbor his whole life. He and his wife, Vicki, owned a Marine Construction and Diving Business for 41 years. They decided to start a retirement business, so, they began building seasonal rental cottages. Doug completed 3 of them before he passed away in the summer 2015 ( Homeaway #956783 and ). Vicki is carrying on the business that she and Doug started, together.

The three cottages can house 14 happy vacationers, (for a group looking to vacation, together), or rent one for a family. Woodland Cottages I, II and III, all have great holiday appeal ~

Vicki Beal purchased this house in 2012

Why Vicki Beal chose Southwest Harbor

When I am building these cottages, I build them the way I would want them as if I were going to live in them. I try to make them very compfortable, quiet and private. I am pleased with both of them.

Cottage at Southwest Harbor

  • 5 of 5

This was our second time to enjoy the Beal Cottage, #2. It is a special place to rest and relax, a perfect location, close to town and an easy drive to all Mt. Desert and Acadia National Park have to offer. The cottage was comfortable and was well equipped and the king bedded loft room was just wonderful, enjoyed the sunrise in the mornings and beautiful view of Southwest Harbor as well. Loved sitting on the patio and enjoying the beauty and the peace and quiet of the wooded setting with a wonderful view of Southwest Harbor. Vicki was a welcoming hostess and if we needed anything she was right there.

A quiet place on the quiet side

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay in the #2 cabin. Plenty of space, peaceful setting, and a lovely view. We appreciated the comfy bed and available W/D. The unit had a full kitchen, which we didn't use at all, due to the wife's policy of no cooking on vacation. The cabin is about 10 min from Bass Harbor lighthouse, and 30 min from the main stops in Acadia NP. The road to the cabin is a little steep and rough, but it was no trouble for our SUV. Thanks for letting us stay at your wonderful cabin!

Beautiful home in the woods. Bring a flashlight !

  • 4 of 5

The house is relatively new, nicely decorated and in pristine condition. It contained everything we needed except for bath soap, paper towels and Kleenex. I'd pick those things up before you come. No check in. The house was open with the key on the table. We never met the owners or anyone else in our 4 days. It's hard to imagine 6 people in this house with only 1 bathroom. I suppose that's what the great outdoors is for. My only suggestion is room darkening electronic shades on the main 4 windows. The view is great but it would be nice to sleep in past sunrise. A small square coffee table would be nice in the living room. Give you someplace to put something on. With the TV so high up on the wall, I preferred to watch it sitting in the lazy boy on the 2nd level. Less strain on the neck.

The walk to town involves a stroll down an uneven wooded road that is a little longer than we would have liked. It's also pitch black in the dark. If you want to walk to town and might not come back until after dark - bring a flashlight. There isn't one in the house. FYI, the owners of this house also own BEALS LOBSTER PIER right in SW Harbor on the marina. I highly recommend it. Good food, great atmosphere and the best blueberry margaritas on Desert Island. There is a 10% off coupon in the local paper. It would be nice if the owner automatically gave a 15% off coupon to the renter of the house good for the duration of their stay. That's more than the average customer would receive and I'm sure would be a reason to choose BEALS over the other Lobster Pounds on the Quite Side of the Island. We are so glad we chose to stay on the Quite Side. They weren't kidding.- Tom Lapka

Owner's Response: I am sorry the cabin wasn't your satisfaction. We do put paper towels under the sink for each renter. Beal' s is not owned by us. Was sold 3 years ago to people from away.

My Wife & I spent 5 nights in Woodland Cottage #2. The cottage is spotlessly kept & the owner has provided every amenity imaginable. The location provides privacy along with easy access to Southwest Harbor, Bar Harbor & Acadia National Park. We greatly enjoyed our stay & would highly recommend this property!

Great Place to Unwind after Exploring Acadia NP

  • 4 of 5

Our party of 3 spent 6 nights at the Woodland Cottage #2. The cottage is located not far from the main drag in Southwest Harbor. The sleeping loft upstairs was roomy and the king size bed was comfortable. My sister used the queen bedroom downstairs and there was a third smaller bedroom with twin bunk beds that we did not use. The living area was compact with a futon and two chairs. The dining table was large and could seat six. There was one bathroom with great water pressure and plenty of hot water. We would have preferred a second bath, but one was adequate for three guests. The cottage had a terraced gravel patio area with a gas grill and the lower level had a firepit. While we did not use the fire pit, there was a place to purchase a small bundle of firewood just down the road from the cottage. We did sit outdoors a few late afternoons which was enjoyable. The large windows face east and you can see the harbor. The sun rises very early in the summer. If you want to sleep in, you would be wise to bring a sleep mask. We out the door most mornings by 7 am, so this was not an issue for us. The kitchen was well equipped for our needs. We cooked breakfast every morning and packed lunches for our days in the park. We cooked two meals during our stay and had all the pots and utensils we needed. There is no dishwasher, but we did not mind washing dishes. We wished that there had been a dish rack for drying the dishes, but we did not find one. There were only two dishtowels that we could find and we certainly could have used a few more. We slept with the windows open and the ceiling fan running. A few evenings it was a bit stuffy in the sleeping loft, but things would cool down after 10 pm or so. There is a ductless AC unit downstairs, but we never used it. The washer and dryer is located in a separate outbuilding several yards away and is shared by Cottage #2 and #3. This is really the only negative we had as the two times we wanted to do laundry, the other guests in #3 were already using the machine and we had to wait a couple hours for our turn, which had us doing laundry after dark. I did attempt to connect my iPad to the wifi, but found it to be very slow as cottages #2 and #3 share the wifi. So we just used the data on our smartphones to access the internet. This might be an issue if someone needs to work remotely during their stay. The cottage was about a 40 minute drive to most places in Acadia NP. All in all, a very pleasant place to stay!

Owner's Response: There was a dish rack under the kitchen sink next to dish detergent. As far as the laundry we ask that people be considerate of the other guests. WiFi is an issue at times especially if using multiple apples products, but had a professor for a month streaming classes and she never had an issue. The A/C mentioned is a heat pump which is a very efficient heat and cooling source.
